You can switch the Round Shield for T1 boots and get Chalice and Boots then rush into Warrior Tabi. Go with Teleport Glyph in case you die early or get back to lane after buying an item early. Blink if your confident in your early kill.
I personally think that Mantle of Discord would be really good after boots and will help you with any CC incoming for you. Talisman of Energy in the late game won't be as good but if you are in a significant lead compared to the rest of your team it may be a good idea to get for team fights and the extra health it gives you.
I feel like on Thanatos that it is a good idea to more closely distribute your skills for boxing and fighting in lane. Your 3 is your lane clear and silence and your 1 gives health for boxing and good poke damage and finally the 2 gives you good chase potential and good pen at the later levels. Use the 4 for Execute or if you can guarantee the kill then use for the stun then 1 into 2 for the finisher. Based on some feedback, the 1 might be better for clearing the camps at the start of the game if you hit the Boss Monster with it and then use the Cleave AA for the rest of the minions.

The power spike from Full Boots and Shifters will catch most people off guard in a Straight up fight early on and may secure you an early kill. Shifter's Shield also helps provide additional Protections when you get passed the Health Threshold.
Breastplate will give you a little bit of CDR, Mana, and Phys Prots for fights and Surviving. However, going against a Magical Solo, you should go with Caduceus Shield before Breastplate to get Magical Prots and Heal with your 1 more effectively. Hide of the Urchin is very good when it's finished stacking and would be a good option instead of Cad Shield.
Your last items can be very situational and can very well Make or Break your build in the late game. Brawlers Beat Stick really helps against a team that has decent healing and will give you a little bit more Pen on top of your 2. If the Team your facing has more CC in it then go Magi's Cloak for the Health, Prots, and Passive.
Thanatos is a great jungle with high damage and good sustain in Early and Mid game but you don't usually see him in the Solo lane all that often. This is actually my first build from scratch and I have actually used him a couple of times in solo so far with ok returns. I chose Thanatos because he's one of my favorite gods in Smite but I usually try and play Solo. I chose a hard god to build for and I'm hoping that the community can tell me some tips on where to change my build or if it's ok and I should change the Order I buy in.
In the Early game for Thanatos Solo, It might be a good idea to group the wave as much as you can by poking the Solo with the 1 or the 3. This is so your Auto Attack Chain finish hits all of the wave and your are clearing faster. Early fights can go either way between you and the enemy god, because Solo lane almost Requires you to be Aggressive you may lose the early fights if you miss your 1 or if you use your 3 at the wrong time. Jungles have also been known to stick around Solo to gank and help their Solo get ahead early so be very careful and use your Starter Ward to put by the totem.
When you get Breastplate or Cad Shield you'll really start to shine in lane and rotations. Stone Cutting and Boots put you at good damage for the mid and early parts of the game and with Breastplate you get more Prots and CDR to bully your lane some and get the early rotations. Cad Shield Gives you more power and will help you stay in the fight longer with the increase in healing from the 1. Be on top of where your solo laner is at in this phase of the game. Your enemy Solo will be making Rotations for Gold Fury and your XP Camps if they get the chance, so be sure to buy wards to help the Mid Lane and to save yourself from Mid to Solo Ganks.
Thanatos has always had some problems in the later stages of the game, from damage fall off to being to squishy against the enemies. In this phase you can take more damage then you may realize with your prots but you still want to be finishing the back line and diving them when you can. Your Ultimate can really change the state of the fight in this faze of the game, If you see a Tank getting close to execute or is in your threshold for a little while it would be a good idea to take the chance and finish them. Your Silence is also integral to helping against Ability focused enemies.
In conclusion, Thanatos is Great in the Mid game for all you'll need him to do. Try him out in the Solo lane and you may be surprised at what you find. He is a fun god to just play around with and it's always satisfying to Execute someone in the tower and just casually walk out. I haven't played against enough of the Solo Laners yet to determine how much of a threat they are to him or Who would be a major/max threat. The Threats I chose are from Gods that I personally play in Solo and see a lot of, so they are gods that I'm almost certain fit in the threats I depicted.
