The
Headless Horseman is a ghost story from New York. According to legend, it began during the American Revolutionary War. It started near the deserted streets of Sleepy Hollow, a small town near Tarrytown, New York. During the war, the British claimed to have hired many German mercenaries, including the headless horseman. The soldier lost his head during the war, and his headless corpse was buried in an old church in Sleepy Hallow.
His remains were eventually buried in the cemetery of the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, from which he rises as a malevolent ghost, furiously searching for his head. According to modern versions of the story, his rides took place around Halloween, around the time the battle took place.
