So in arena play, it's often a source of contention whether your team should be pushing past the enemies tank (bacchus, ymir...) or defensive bruisers (e.g. hercules) to try to get kills.

As a mage, I'm not a fan of running past the enemies tank to attack full health squishies, because the enemies tank will just close in from behind, stun our dps, pick off low health retreaters, and generally make for the easy kills. Same with loki, who's often hiding behind a pillar or sidelane wall.

So much of mage's defense relies on range and avoidance, and you basically give all that up when you run past enemies.

Thus, you often get disagreement, like a sobek on the other side of the arena, crocidile flipping everything, and wondering why his team isn't behind him to pick up everything, which usually results in two camps angry at each for "not knowing how to play."

In my experience, melee seem to prefer to run push past the enemies tank. Mages seem split on this. Obviously there's some that don't mind dying 10+ times...I've played 500+ games, and don't think I ever died that much... But its also melee that seem to die the most (fenrir, odin...are the most likely candidates to zerg many times with 10-20 deaths, with barely a kill to their name).

My strategy is usually to team with another dps, and focus the tank (yes, focus the tank!), until his teammates have to move up to him to better support him, or he dies, or retreats...in which case we can push up in position. If they move up to us to support their tank, even better, cause now we can hit them without being so out of position, and they got longer to run back home, so its easier for thantos, chronos, apollo, thor, neith, etc.... to pick them up before they get back to base when they need to retreat.

So what's everyone's opinion on this topic?

It all depends on what kind of escape the god you're playing has.

if I'm neith, then yeah, I'll take a chance going past the tank. if **** hits the fan, I just root someone and backflip out.

Now, if I was playing, say, anubis, then hell no I'm not going deep. I have to pray my team is right behind me or I'm not getting back out.

also, I've never seen super suicide odin before... plenty of suicide fenpups, though.

I have the same strategy as you . When I get a damaging god I put a lot of penetration into it ( Freya + Shoes of the Magi + Obsidian Shard or even Focused Void Stone) and while my team is raging on me like "Stupid Freya is focusing the tank , uninstall Smite..." etc I kill the tank before the tank can escape . I never understood all this fuzz about not focusing the tank , what should I do , ignore him and try to get by hoping that he will ignore me too ? The tank can be killed as easily as other players if we focus him/her .

Ya. Everyone focus on a tank and let the enemy team penta you guys XD

A tanks job is to initiate and distract. They are very little of a threat. Sure they have hard cc. Just dont group up or avoid his cc with beads or magi blessing

This assumes the fallacy that the enemy team is in range to damage us. They aren't unless we move up, so hitting the tank is like a free action. By focusing the tank, you can force them into range, or they can keep sacrificing their tank.

If your team can't focus down their tank, then you got problems anyways...cause that tank will run through your ranks, and a mage can die pretty fast to even a tank.

I agree with you blinkicide ,people in arena anyway should focus the tank or at least get him low enough for him to get afraid so when he/she tries to do something( I honestly thing this should be applied to any game mode), one of your high damaging teammates can kill him quick before he does something.

Too me only some gods are eligible to try to go pass through the tank just to kill a low health target that you know you guys can kill. Most likely Loki since he can go invisible and some other gods who can go in and out with know problem but they make sure to get beads for any hard CC that will come after the kill.

Well. I in ganks you really don't need to focus on the tank. You would be wasting your time. Your better of trying to kill of the soft gods. But... if your thanatos. then gank him till you see that his in the kill hp threshold (Where a skull pops up on him). Tanks are not a problem for him even if they try to escape. One ulti and their dead xP
