When do you get Gift over Vanguard?

As a tank, I typically get Mark of the Vanguard and then into a couple of active items. But lately I'm seeing the top tier players go Watcher's Gift first. The last tourney I watched COGnitive gaming even went Watcher's Gift into Midas Boots. This is on Athena, Baccus, and Sobek. It seems all the top tanks are going Gift first.

How do you have to play differently with one instead of the other? What goes into deciding one over the other?

Tank takes mark and healers take gift. Midas boots is strange. Since it costs a lot.

In my opinion it's better to take mark and greaves as tank and gift and apropriate boots (pys or magic) if you are a support.
never forget dawngate and never forgive EA. Freia will hunt them for eternity.

Both work. Mark is better if you plan on an aggressive early game. Mark into greaves helps you tank quite a bit. Gift, on the other hand, works better for slightly more passive play. It gives you some sustain and helps you out in the long run, since the usual money problems tanks face are less noticeable. Gift into Midas hurts your early tanking, but it gives you some sustain, speed, health, mana and much more money in the long run to finish your build quicker or get more wards.

Gift basically helps you stay up in levels while the person you are with gets last kills. Gift into Midas is pretty much going for a greedy build. Where you don't expect the enemy to push you that hard so the lack of defensive gear isn't that noticeable. But if allowed to do that too long; and with some good gold fury kills from jungler; your gpm will actually be quite nice.

Hmmm, I should try that. I usually skip some of the potions and grab a second active. Blink for Ymir or creeping curse (which can net an early kill).

Ive seen the watchers gift used more too in competitive but haven't tried it recently. A while back some people did a math breakdown on watchers and midas boots and it sounded like it took quite a while before they paid for themselves. (like 30 minutes).

I'm not entirely sure about the math, but there are a couple of things to remember.

1. Wathcer's Gift has been buffed since its release. It now both grants you last hit bonuses and standard gold per 5, making it more efficient than it used to be.

2. Even if it takes a while for them to get their cost back, don't forget their stats. There's more to them than just the gold gains. Watcher's grants as much health as the Mark, and also grants both halth and mana sustain. Overall less helpful to tanking than the Mark, but still decent.

The Midas boots, on the other hand, grant the standard speed from boots, gives health an mana and are also cheaper than all boots in the game save for Celerity boots. In other words, they both have stats other than the gold, meaning you're not gimping yourself entirely by picking them up over the more conventional tank items. As long as you're careful and don't get hammered in the early game these items will make you stronger in the long run.

Also don't forget that once you get more items, you call always sell them back for decent gold return.
