Hello Achilles newcomers and elders,
I have 200 hours on Achilles, and these builds have worked for me every time. I'll jump into the items and lane starters now.
For the starting lane phase, I have found that 95% of the time building health pots and chalice is the best case scenario. You will start off hitting a little less hard, but the safety of having the extra health in your pocket is quintessential. This will work as you slowly gain levels in the first lane phase, as Achilles hits level 3 he starts hurting. The 2 should start, as it will heal you when you use an ability on another god, followed by either the 3 or the 1 depending on where your target is.
For physical tanks in solo lane, please for the love of god build gladiator shield. I see so many people build anything but against my Achilles with gladiator shield, and they lose every time. If you have a healing mage in lane, however, you can be more flexible. If you feel you are not hitting hard enough, you can go boots first. This is completely valid, but I usually find that pestilence is the better option. You will take far less damage from the opposing mage, and you will slow their healing down dramatically. Be patient against mages, as they will hide under tower and hit you with basics or abilities while you struggle to do any real damage. Farm your way there. This build also puts you above max CDR, so if you feel like replacing mantle of discord or hydras for something else that will support you against a certain team comp, it still works out perfectly.
For the rest of the items, they are tanky with a side effect of either increasing your own damage, or slowing down something of the enemy. Void shield makes you physically tankier and lowers the protections of those around you while simultaneously giving you power. Great item for all solo laners, as you will do more damage and take less. Pridwen is great on achilles for the use of his ult. When you land the ult in an aggressive setting, you have some extra shielding and have more time for damage or to escape. Mantle of Discord is an obvious protection item for both magical or physical, and the passive can be utilized effectively in a sticky situation. Then there is hydras. Achilles is a burst damage character. He blows through his abilities, and this item allows for a last basic attack to hit a squishy hunter or mage for massive damage.

Like here you just don't see it picked up in Solo.
for arena this would be a "first" buy (technically boots is always the first buy) for me in a lot of games.
however I'm going to change the statement to arena since in assault I would probably prefer Sovereignty or another aura item first depending on team comp. Haven't played joust in a while
