Benevolence's xp and gold helps you keep up or even get ahead of the opposing support. Make sure to always be by an ally because the xp and gold you give your teammates can help them catchup or snowball.
Replace boots late with Elixir of Speed and Spirit Robe. If the other team has a double physical duo lane make sure to build Sovereignty right after Shoes of Focus. Same goes for Heartward Amulet if they have a double magical duo lane.
Magic Shell is almost always the best first relic option. Get Heavenly Wings to help chase down kills in team fights. Buy Cursed Ankh if the other team has multiple healers. Get Belt of Frenzy if your team needs more shred during team fights or for towers and objectives.
Try to get to 1200 gold so you can finish Shoes of Focus and buy a couple wards on your first back.
Contagion or Pestilence for anti-heal. Spectral Armor against crit heavy teams or one really strong carry using crits. Witchblade against an auto attack heavy team. If you don't want to stack Gauntlet of Thebes, though it's easiest to stack on Ganesha with his passive, you can opt for Mail of Renewal. Spirit Robe against teams with a lot of Crowd Control. Gem of Isolation if you just want to add a little power and it still has health and CCR.
1. Turn of Fate for the damage on your clear. 2. Ohm for the protections on the Ohm as well as some cooldown. 3. Dharmic Pillars as the damage isn't as important as the zoning it provides. 4. Remove Obstacles as once again the damage isn't nearly as important as the CC.

Benevolence > Reinforced Shoes > Stone of Binding > Gauntlet of Thebes
This would give you decent early protections before you went into your Thebes plus some nice damage application from Stone of Binding to help your team get some early kills.
Also, ideally your start is fine except you should be getting Hand of the Gods instead of Multi Potions. This will help you and your ADC get to lane much quicker.
To your first point, I don't necessarily recommend this build on any other guardian as he can stack Gauntlet quicker than anyone else. Ganesha is better at staying back some to protect his carry early game anyway. I'd also say you'd have enough health to wait until Gauntlet because the opponent ADC is probably stacking as well to get their damage online which takes much longer than stacking Gauntlet with Ganesha.
Hand of the Gods is definitely viable, but I find myself running out of mana before I want to back. I'll put that as another start option.
Also yes you do stay further back but you're still using the CC in your 2, 3 and ult around your team which will be impactful, whether you're backline or frontline doesn't really make a difference.
