These items are dependent on what full starter item you prefer to go. But I find it best to go either Sentinels / War Flag if you plan on taking the fight to them or are being dove. But if not and their team composition is very assassin/ backline targeting, they have a warrior or someone who can easily attack your ADC or Mage, go benevolence for Heroism upgrade.

Always get gauntlet of thebes. Must have with fafnir. An argument can be made with getting prophetic but it depends on the game at hand. If you think you can get the stacks off for prophetic get it. But get gauntlet first as by the time you begin team fights you can stack prophetic. This way your early game will be better. In combination they are great with Heroism starter item, as it scales with your HP and both these provide HP.

This one is very dependent on team composition. Contagion and pestilence for the early game anti-heal. This will help your laners as you begin rotating now.
Heartward is their team comp is very magic damage dealing, you will protect your allies by being near them - combos nicely with all starting items. You should get the glyph immediately, if you got pestilence for some physical damage protections.
If their team comp is very physical and they have crit. No brainer you go spectral first, - against Merc, Ne Zha you will be able to body block. Their crits will not be as detrimental as in the late game. But protections are protections and they will have a harder time killing you and thus you will have an easier time CCing them.
Valor of their team is physical and they are not running crit. Great for cooldowns, if they are big ability spammers. this is great, you can get the glyth too.
At this time you should have both physical and magical protections in which order that suits the game. Upgrade your started item as quickly as you can. With these items built you should be able to hold your own in a fight. Upgrade relics after these items are bought.

very situational. If you are max stacked for protections - get spear of desolation. this will help with ability cooldowns. other things to consider are relic dagger or specific items that will aid the team.
runeforged to make sure that the burst damage on your team is better landing as fafnir has 2 abilities that constitute hard CC.
Midgard if their team has example: bakasura, merc, 2 speedy attackers, kali. People who basic attack alot. this will help your team especially if you have a speed attacker as your team's overall basic attacks will be faster.
Emperors if you have to dive pheonix's i reccomend this item only if you have a tower buster - heimdallr or a chernanbog who is going to split, go with them and make sure they get the towers/ pheonixes.
binding - useful to pick up, shoudl provide the last bit of protections before you are capped at 325 and is just a useful item to have

your job as fafnir is to be in the face of the enemies. You are to essentially be a constant issue both human form and dragon form. you have many cc abilities, a ally buff and your ult grants you a small immunity when going into your dragon. Fafnir excels at being in the thick of it.
tips are wait for people to get close and then land your 1 - hammer to hard CC them, always be landing on people who are big threats to aid your team, this also disrupts the enemy team. a good combo is to stun someone, land on them and by the time they are ready to hit you you ult granting immunity to the enemies damage. from there you can hard cc them again and jump either back to your team or to another enemy.
Fafnir is a scrapper. they should always be looking to cause problems in lane and injungle, if their jungler is getting a camp, throw your hammer at them to annoy them. Fafnir has a great escape. stay close to team mates and protect your backline, but to do so you do not have to be on them like a disease, give them some space. your 1 is a great hard cc ability and can be thrown from a distence. This does not mean let the kali jump on your Amuzen Cab, but be aware that you are there to inflict problems upon the entire team. Fafnir works well with people who have some sort of self peel. Morgan le fey, heimdallr etc...
