For starters it all depends on what your team needs by default you would be going compassion as it's one of the best starters upgrades that does everything for you, if the other team has a lot of hard CCS, said CCS that would result into a kill then hero is the one you go. If your team does better if higher attack speed like lets say you have a sol mid the war banner is also a starter you can go. Sentinel's embrace is in there because it's a good starter to go if you don't know what to go.

This is an example of a build that I most of the time go, rushing cooldown is very important for Aphrodite because of her healing output and her ult. Talisman of Energy is the only item I ever trade out of my builds, most of the time trading it out for other items that I need to Counter or help my team out.

All depends on what your team needs, There're only a few times where you can go med and that is you don't feel the need to get horrific because the other team doesn't have dive, Do not go shell if the other team is dive base, Horrific is the better pick because it decreases there dmg output as well as there speed.

Aphrodite, is a great support once you know her playstyle and how to get the most used out of her.
Positioning:
Most of the time on Aphrodite you want to be near the backline, Aphrodite isn't an engage support but a peeling support her whole kite is made to just help teammates get out of sticky places or to help a teammate be able to go in deep. Most of the time you would be playing in the middle of your team being ready to link up to whoever is in danger or to whoever is diving in (most of the time being your jungle) You don't want to be in the front line because Aphrodite get full use out of her kite by getting others off of your teammate or by helping a teammate dive in.
