I like the attack speed and passive from protector of the jungle, but you can switch to bumba's hammer if you feel more comfortable. Sell boots for a counter item like brawler's or mantle of discord.

Thanatos' kit has amazing damage output, very nice life steal, and a great penetration buff from your two. So I think the best way to use Thanatos is to build to his strengths, and maximize his damage and life steal. Sure you can be funny and build some crit occasionally, but Thanatos will acquire most of his damage and sustain through abilities. One item that I thought was a little sketchy at first was Soul Eater, but the passive from the evolved soul eater plays hand in hand with Thanatos' kit, as well as some cdr. Add a Bloodforge for more power, life steal, and sustain, and a Heartseeker for even more power and penetration. The Jotun's will put you at 30% cdr and give flat pen which are both necessities. These items could be considered your core items, with your starter being variable based on personal preference, and the item you sell boots for can be a counter item like brawler's or mantle. With these core items you should almost one shot any squishy with your main combo, and you should be able to shred through protection heavy tanks as well with the percentage pen.
