So I heard that flight MH-17 (i think that was the number) was shot down in Ukraine. Planes aren't allowed to fly there now.
Well I realised I will be stopping in Hong Kong tomorrow, and we'll be flying over Russia. Pretty close to the Ukrainian border (I really should search how to spel Ukraine).

I know it was, but a lot of people think themselves political experts when they have little understanding of the extremity of situations, such as the aforementioned "giggling at obama's empty threats".
Things aren't simple, as someone who was in Model UN for four years and won a world championship in it. Sadly, in the political sphere, sometimes you have to allow lesser/medium evils to exist in order to avoid an absolute calamity...sadly, despite the airline explosion claiming many lives, a war with another world power isn't exactly something you want to near.
This is true. As I'm sure you notice at times as well, many people who tend to comment on anything related to politics have little to no idea what they're talking about. As Firraria stated on his end, the Obama thing was a joke, and on my end, it was a joke as well, though it does have some validity in past incidents.
However, yes, there is little Obama can and should do in this situation even if Putin was directly involved. As you stated, while it is a very tragic event, and those who were involved should be punished, the punishment needs to be carefully looked at and considered because the last thing we want out of this is another war, which at times seems we're inching closer and closer to with each passing day.

That was sarcasm, what I said. It was something that my friend said to me that I thought was pretty silly, I should have clarified.

But I digress, this is exceptionally off-topic and I don't like to debate on abortion, politics, nor religion (kinda my trifecta of no good way to argue; there is no such thing as "right" in these arguments), so I'll just wish Penta a wonderful flight and hopefully a good vacation!
It were russian sepratists who want to add that part of ukraine to rusia. They aren't under direct command by actual russian militry but the missle lauching machines they got are from russia.

Of course Putin isn't directly involved. I doubt he's horrible enough of a person to directly command a civilian airliner to be shot down, but those weapons were obtained through the Russian military, making them at least somewhat indirectly responsible.
Plus, there's a lot going on between Russia and the Ukraine that Putin is involved with, which arguably was a catalyst to this event, but that's an entirely different subject.
At any rate, I'm sure everything will go fine for your flight Penta. Due to recent events, I'm sure everyone is taking all necessary precautions when it comes to flying in or close to the area.
