Quests are a special form of roleplaying (or RP-ing) meant for a forum.

It goes like this.

The QM, or questmaster, writes down a scenario. Then, the players vote to control the character, or something.

Quoted:
You arrive at the abandoned tower.

An unearthly chill lingers in the air, and the tower and the flat, empty grounds are ominously devoid of any signs of life.

As you are attempting to discern for traps, you hear an unearthly shriek behind you. You turn around to see three ghouls, a stone's throw away, clawing out of the earth. They sprint toward you on all fours, with their spider-like limbs and gaping jaws, and the nauseous, tell-tale chill of necromancy intensifies.

Your hand instinctively drifts toward your sword, but you hesitate. You're positive that you can outpace them long enough to reach the tower, but fighting them might be better than running into gods-know-how-many traps your quarry has left for you.

Do you:

[x] Run toward the tower.

[x] Stand your ground and fight.

[x] Write in...

And in response, the players would vote for an option. After a period of time, which is anywhere from a few hours to a few days, the QM tallies the votes and writes in the next part of the story.

Quoted:
Example Vote:

[x] Stand your ground and fight.

Quoted:
Example Vote 2:

[x] Run toward the tower.
-[x] If they retreat as you get close, stop running.

The write-in option means that you can essentially create your own answer. Not all votes will allow this, of course, but it happens commonly anough.

There are variable mechanics. Some Quests are just simple roleplaying. Some create stat systems, inventories, a sanity meter, etc. Skill points and dice rolls are the most common mechanic...but sadly, Smitefire doesn't have an integrated dice rolling program.

And that's how a Quest works.
