But yet we can purchase gems? Let me explain. I was reading an article talking about how the term "Beta" is very overused. Typically, Beta games are still in testing. Testing.

Smite has been out for a while. And it has lots of properties of a released game.

What am I saying?

I'm saying that it seems like Hi-Rez wants the best of both worlds: In game currency purchases AND an excuse for bugs

In game currency purchases are typically the quality of a released game, but it seems like the beta term is to blow off any bugs.

"Oh well it's in beta so it might be a little messed up."

See what I'm getting at?

*shrug* Smite is hardly the first game to do this kind of thing.

I thought most online beta games had a cash shop of some sort? I know the game Warframe has an in-game market, with everything purchasable using Platinum (the real money currency) and its still in beta. If I remember correctly Dota 2 had a cash shop while it was still in beta as well.

Anyway I assume most of their earnings from the shops are needed considering most of their games are free-to-play, and they still have to not only pay employees but also use that money for the game as well.

@Blissey1

Well sure, it doesn't mean it's... "right", I guess. Releasing a game in open beta and then asking for people's money is becoming a common thing.

@Sasquatch180

Well there is a little bit of a difference. It's only gotten by in Smite because you can't really TELL it's in beta, but that's the point: It's supposed to be in beta. As quoted from the article:
"Calling your game an 'open beta' when the cash shop is open for business is disingenuous at best. When anyone can play your game and you're taking their money for in-game purchases, that's called "released."

They do use the term beta as an excuse. But they have made it clear that purchased stuff will carry over into non-beta. When will it be non-beta? Whenever they feel confident enough in themselves to call it a final release. Lol.

Typically 'Alpha Testing' is in house. The Devs, friends, family. Then 'Beta Testing' involves bringing in outside people to test. Usually in beta testing they have some sort of way to easily submit bugs...I don't really see that in smite.

Finally comes a 'stress test' (which is often confused with beta) which is usually done in games to test server load, find bottle necks, and 'crash the servers'.

ya and there are some people who will just jump from beta to beta so they can play games for free.

It's in beta because the game isn't finished yet. Sure, it has everything a game would need. It *can* be released now. But it isn't finished. They're releasing the gods that will be baseline upon release every other week, and are CONSTANTLY reworking entire maps and how they do the ranked system. Until the game is formally released they can call it Beta, even if it's considered overused. Hell, I think even minecraft is still considered beta, if not released recently.

The point is, the creators decide when something is finished, whether it *can* stand alone as a game or not.

depends on your definition of "open beta". To me, the Beta Phase of games is where they truly add the real content - in this case, biweekly god patches. Open beta is basically a released game, except there are said updates happening, and the bugs that come along with it

However, once a game gets officially released, the amount of updates goes down drastically. The only known exception that I know of is Minecraft. I bet, once Smite hits ~100 gods, and thinks that the gods are balanced, Hi-Rez will officially release it, and the amount of updates and new gods will dwindle to about once or twice a year, excluding bugfix patches.

-200 gems on that this will happen.

I'd say it's much more than 1 or 2 a year, I'd say a god every month-2 months, but as far as major updates go, I do agree.
