Shinji, I agree that a general strategy guide outlining the current meta would or should be helpful. What I want to promote even more, though, is an understanding of the game, so a strategy guide should include not just what to do but why to do it. As I suggested elsewhere, even a history of the various metas that have prevailed in the past should be mentioned with emphasis on the static changes that brought about a new meta, so people can get some insight into the logical connections between the current conditions the game is being played under and the current meta.

That is way I think a more general guide that includes a comprehensive glossary of all the official and unofficial terms in usage. To someone unfamiliar with dota and moba games, Smiters are speaking a different language full of specialized terms, abbreviations, acronyms, and so on. A reference guide explaining how the game works from the technical and social (linguistic) perspectives, not just the strategic perspective, is sorely needed. It should be possible for anyone, with the help of such a guide, to answer any technical question, such as what is the difference between straight penetration, such as Focused Void Blade's passive offers, and a percentage of penetration, such as Titan's Bane's passive offers. I have spent weeks of my spare time trying to figure out the correct questions that I ought to have been able to look up quickly and easily. I have pieced together a fair basic understanding, but there are things I am still uncertain about. You should not have to ask people. There are too many questions like this. There should be an official guide. People are often nice enough to answer, but quite frankly, they are often not sure themselves and sometimes just plain wrong, and that only promotes confusion.

Why you need to know the unofficial terms, too, is so that you can understand when you are talking to others or reading what they have written. I read some things early on that may have been helpful if I understood what the writer was saying. Most people use the linguistic shorthand new players just do not understand.

That some official strategic guide that is updated as needed is also important. It doesn't need to be comprehensive. That can be left up to individuals and sites like this one, but it does need to cover the basics. I remember one of my first games. I was necessarily, profoundly bad. It was the first time I tried to jungle. I had been introduced to the game by watching gameplay videos and commentaries by ForceStrategy and then Squiiddish. So anyway, at the end of the game in the chat a teammate says to others that Kali (me) was "inconsiderate." OK, not too harsh but entirely wrong. I am very considerate. What I was was completely ignorant. The reason he felt I was inconsiderate was because I had been watching older videos where junglers routinely would get two or three buffs for themselves. I didn't know the meta had changed. I didn't know any reason why it should have changed. I knew practically nothing. So I killed a buff camp and picked up the buff..cool! Then I killed the next one and couldn't pick up the buff. My first thought wasn't "Oh, the must have changed the rules of the game." It was "Why can't I pick this up? Is there something I need to do, like press some button to pick up a second? one?&quot. I had no clue. So naturally I kept killing camps until it finally dawned on me that something had changed and this was no longer possible for some reason. So of course, this guy thinks I am inconsiderate because I just leave the damn buffs on the ground to go to waste. I did wish at one point that there was some way of communicating there was buffs available but I didn't even know I what I needed to do to type a message or that pinging the map was even possible.
I am still not any good at this game, but I know I will get there before too long. I don't need to be awesome. I would just like not to be a drag on my team or irritate anyone unnecessarily. Some told me to spend more time in practice mode. I didn't take offense. I just confined myself to practice mode until I could kill the snot out of it, but that did not make me a much better player. There really needs to be a queue for beginners. Not one that necessarily excludes better players but just so they know they should not complain if we suck. If they don't like it, then they can go play in the "normal" queue. The "abnormal" one is our house! I suggest there should be three levels. One that only admits beginning and average players. One that admits average to good players, and one that admits only good players. You should have to obtain a certain, reasonable level of ability before being able to move up into the next queue level.
There is too much salt thrown at noobs, and HighRez needs to remedy this unhealthy situation. No one should be threatened with being reported, harassed, or insulted because they suck. You are not telling me anything I don't know. I am a beginner. I have never played any kind of video, electronic, PC game like this in my life. I have every right to suck. Yes, dammit! I suck! But HighRez, my money is as green as anyone's. And sucking is only temporary, after all.
