I find him very very squishy, and lacking in his Made You Look - too long to activate, but his scaling off of speed basically assures that he not only can keep up, but he can do damage. He may be the only god where and are more than just acceptable, but actually recommended or core.
IMO, Ninja Tabi, Fatalis, Heartseeker, Golden Bow, Bloodforge, and Deathbringer/Frostbound is a very good setup for him.

No pen? How are you supposed to deal enough damage with this setup?

Anyways, Mercury is weird. Definitely one of the more unique gods in the game. I just don't understand how he has no mevement speed steroid. I mean, giving him one would be so obvious, and would fit well on . Speaking of which, this skill makes him stupidly good at destroying towers. He can enter tower range with a minion wave and be rid of the tower long before his minions are dead, and he can easily escape a gank with . He might be a more powerful split pusher than Apollo.

He's is stupidly squishy and stupidly powerful. You can burn him down easily but his dancing move is such a powerful cc. His number four is just stupid, burst through my whole team and smacks me on the face. And my whole team is cc'ed, the enemy team comes to smack them. In short, Squishy but his Dance Skills Are Wicked.
