Introduction To Agni

THIS GUIDE WAS ORIGINALLY CREATED IN 2012 AND NOW HAS OVER 200,000 VIEWS! THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THIS GUIDE, I HOPE YOU HAVE FOUND IT HELPFUL!

Agni is one of the most enjoyable Smite gods to play, and carries an average-medium skill cap in order to be successful. This guide will hopefully introduce you to the most commonly used Agni tactics in which you can use as a starting point when discovering your own style for playing Agni.

Playing Agni is all about controlling your lane and constantly harassing the enemy until you feel you have enough power to burst them down. Agni excels at the middle lane, and although he does well on the side lanes with the right partner, Agni truly is one of the best mid-laners in the game.

Agni's Skills - Size & Range

The Importance Of Combustion (Passive)

Agni's passive Combustion is often overlooked by players getting caught up in trying to land the perfect burst-stun combo. I created an entire section for his passive to bring awareness to the extra free damage that can be caused when using one of Agni's other abilities.

Every 4 auto attacks Agni successfully lands will grant a buff called Combustion. This buff makes your next Flame Wave or Rain Fire deal an extra 60% of your magic power +30 to an enemy at absolutely no mana cost, so try to be aware of it when playing.

Clearing Minion Waves

Agni is capable of killing an entire wave of creeps with a single skill by level 3 or 4 using Path of Flame. By charging through the forward enemy creeps while they are engaged with your creeps, you will damage/kill the entire creep wave, including the Roman Ranged in the back.

It is important that when using Path of Flame to clear enemy creep waves to be mindful of where the enemy god is. If the ability hits the god, all of that enemies creeps will turn and attack you. Since you are behind the enemy lines after charging in, creeps can do considerable damage to you during the early game!

Engaging Enemy Gods

* Agni's Signature Burst Combo *
Path Of Flame -> Noxious Fumes -> Rain Fire -> Flame Wave

Your greatest strength when playing Agni will be the potential to deliver high burst damage to a stunned target. The most common strategy used is to charge through an enemy god with Path Of Flame and stunning them with Noxious Fumes while they continue to take damage from the fire trail on the ground. While stunned, follow your attack up by using your Rain Fire charges and/or Flame Wave.

Harassing Enemies

There are many ways to harass an enemy, such as:

  • Poke them with Rain Fire. If the enemy is in the back of the creep wave only use one ability at a time. One of the most common mistakes new Agni players make is spamming their Rain Fire ability and having the 2nd and 3rd shots miss the enemy because they have moved out of the ground target.
  • Initiate small burst combos. Path Of Flame + Noxious Fumes + Flame Wave will hurt an enemy enough to cause them to retreat a bit. This combo can be used to harass enemies and lower their life to a place where you feel your main burst combo could finish them off.
  • Remember when harassing to use Combustion. Try to have your Combustion buff available whenever harassing an opponent for that extra 60% of your magic power damage over time.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Try to avoid making these common mistakes some new Agni players make.

  • Do not spam cast Rain Fire unless you are sure all of shots will hit. It takes Agni a full minute to recover all 3 charges, so if you are going to use them all up on an enemy it is important that all of them hit. More often than not there is sufficient time to plan where your Rain Fire will land, especially if an enemy is attempting to flee.
  • Do not waste Path Of Flame. Agni being a mage is incredibly squishy when ganked, so it is important that this skill be available for you to get out of a situation quick when needed. If you are over extending into the enemies side of the map, be aware that a gank may be coming and plan your method of escape.
  • You do not always have to put your Noxious Fumes on the ground first before attempting to ignite it and cause a stun. Most players know when they see this ability to get out of it, and in many situations it could have been avoided by using the ability afterwards, such as using Path Of Flame and then laying the Noxious Fumes down after. You can also fire a Rain Fire onto an area and still have time to lay a Noxious Fumes down before the meteor hits the ground. Of course there are many times that laying the fumes down first is necessary, just be mindful that there are tricks that can be done to stun enemies by not giving them enough reaction time to get out.

What I don't see many players do as Agni, is using their Noxious Fumes after using their dash to stun anyone who is fallowing them and it gets so many people killed.

While this guide is not completely outdated, it needs some touchups. I'm feeling the crave for an Agni guide. This is a great nice and compact but I'd like a more in-depth. I also do not feel you stress the importance of Rain Fire -> Noxious Fumes -> Flame Wave como. While you do mention it at the end, I use Noxious Fumes 90% for this combo. The enemy is less prepared and you can harass more safely than dashing in with Path of Flames. While you have been gone this happened -
Noxious Fumes
Casting time reduced from 0.3s to 0.2s.
Fume cloud deploy time reduced from 0.1 to instantaneous.

They purposely did this to compensate for the lack of cc immunity from his dash to a better combo burst mage.

I feel Agni is one of the best mages in the game right now and more guides need to serve him justice :3. But I still liek yur gide.

I would absolutely add in CDR to the cap. It reduces his Rain Fire charge time, which is imperative to not only killing, but simply harassing. His flame wave is not long enough range to matter, so if you're going to trade at ALL, you need that rain fire up as often as possible. In the safe build I'd add in either Chronos Pendant or Breastplate of Valor (especially if they have a loki. You CAN and WILL be killed 100-0 before you can even dash. It's ridiculous the burst some gods can put out.)

Otherwise, nice build, and VERY nice job staying up to date even years later!

I find building cool down reduction on Agni is pretty awesome, Chronos' Pendant + Shoes of Focus cuts rain of fire's cool down from 20 seconds each to 12 seconds each. It will feel like you have almost unlimited amounts of Rain of Fire. Still shouldn't try to spam, but it lets you burst far more regularly, especially if you have plenty of mana (Book of Thoth or Warlock's Sash).

Great guide for learning to play Agni. But there's no item section sadly :(.

Might consider that your next project. Item explanation section seems vital to most nowadays.

To those of you guys saying get poly, get poly! Although I agree Poly is a strong item, but I'd have to say not mandatory on Agni. He specializes more in outranges, and high power. Agni generally doesn't get real close in teamfights except going in for the cleanup. At that point it's ben won anyways.

Indeed Polynomicon is overpowered on almost every mage in the game, including Agni. Even with the nerf it is still one of the best items in the game, I'd add it if I were you.

This looks amazing, but I'm quite sure everyone is saying polyminicon is OP, so you could consider that.
