Hand of the Gods (HOG) is bought on ALL supports to allow clearing of purple buff quicker. Optional to buy 4/5 Health potions.
Ares' passive Blessed Presence benefits from him buying AURA ITEMS. Relic Dagger REDUCES cooldown for his ultimate No Escape and gives extra MOVEMENT SPEED and REDUCES blink cooldown. Spirit Robe REDUCES cooldown for his ultimate No Escape and REDUCES damage taken when CCed by enemy gods. Either blink upgrade works. Make sure to buy FORTIFYING shell in normal situations.
Number of aura items: 4.
If you're wanting to do more damage Mystical Mail will give an AREA OF DAMAGE around you and Void Stone will REMOVE MAGICAL PROTECTIONS of enemy gods near you. Spear of desolation REDUCES cooldown on abilities AND gives flat penetration which is beneficial to guardians. Beware that Mystical Mail can put you in combat if you are near enemy minions/gods so blink will not work.

Switch Winged Blade for Relics Dagger if alot of SLOWS on enemy team. Switch Hide of the Nemean Lion for Sovereignty if enemy team have alot of AUTO ATTACK BASED GODS. Switch Witchblade for Relics Dagger if enemy team has alot of AUTO ATTACK BASED GODS. Switch Shogun's Kusari for Heartward Amuelet if your team has alot of AUTO ATTACK BASED GODS. Pestilence/Contagion switch with Sovereignty/Heartward Amuelet respectively for ANTIHEAL. Spectral armour switch for sovereignty if enemy build CRIT items. Magi's cloak switch for spirit robe if you think enemy team are going to CC YOU.
You will ALWAYS go blink first on Ares. Second relic can be EITHER AEGIS if there is alot of BURST DAMAGE, EITHER BEADS if there is alot of CC, PHANTOM SHELL for player made walls (ymir, yemoja walls), BLIGHTED ANKH for antiheal, ENTANGLINGS WINGS for slows and a one second ROOT.
At level 4 don't upgrade skill and hold skill point until level 5, then level both Searing Flesh and No Escape. Recommend not levelling Bolster Defenses until later as DAMAGE and CC are more important at lower rank gameplay. After one skill point in No Escape , there is no need to upgrade it afterwards as damage numbers do not increase by alot and cooldown does not reduce for this ability.

This guide is for NEW/NOT EXPERIENCED PLAYERS ONLY, if you are a more experienced player I do not know why you are looking at this. You can read the abilities in game to find out what each one does.
I'll just be letting you know when these abilities are used and roughly how to play the god.
Ares' first ability Shackles is used to mainly DAMAGE enemy gods and CRIPPLE them. This ability as well can be used up to THREE times as well, allowing you to DAMAGE and CRIPPLE up to THREE gods in front of you, the cripple may also force enemies to beads or use their ultimate for CC immunity so that they may leap out of your chains range. This ability is a very important part of ARES. When your ultimate is down you can initiate fights with this ability, either doing damage to enemy gods or forcing the enemies escape ability to be used. If you are not hitting your shackles consistently or forcing escape abilities to be used I recommend staying away from this god.
Ares' second ability Bolster Defenses can be used to increase your team/your own HP5 so health is healed quicker. As well as that it provides protections and even more protections if you activate it while you have an enemy shackled. It also provides CC reduction which lowers the time you are CCed. I would use this ability either before you are engaging a fight or after you have shackled enemies for extra protections.
Ares' third ability Searing Flesh has increased damage against minions. This ability helps you mainly clear camps with your team mates, it can also be used as a damage ability but does not do as much as Shackles. This ability used on minions can knock back minions reducing the damage they do to you.
Ares' ultimate No Escape pulls and damages enemy gods towards him after 2.5 seconds. Most of the time you will use the relic blink and then use this ability to start the fight. This forces enemy to use beads or use their ultimate (if it's cc immune) to avoid being pulled and stunned after the pull. Be aware during the channelling of this ability you ARE cc immune but NOT damage immune so enemies may try to kill you during the 2.5s of your ultimate animation. During the animation you can not use relics or other abilities. If anyone is pulled you would use
Shackles to stop enemies from escaping.
Ares is not your usual support where he offers HARD CC to PEEL. He has alot of damage and great potential for burning beads. He punishes gods without beads or CC immunity very well. He is not a god that offers traditional PEEL for his carries. He does not have any escape ability so he is a very immobile god so positioning is very important. You will usually pick him if there is a god on the enemy team without cc immunity.
