Ares is one of those gods that does not see a lot of play time, and a lot of players will write this god off as bad, or tell you to play another god. In some cases they are correct. Ares has lost a lot of value over the years because more, and more gods have access to some form of CC immunity in their respected kits. This makes Ares far less valuable into most comps. However this does not make Ares useless, and a "dead" pick as some would call it.
You want to do your best to not play Ares if the enemy teams back liners each have a CC immune ult. For example if the enemy team has a Scylla, and a Rama you will not see a ton of value in your ult because each of those gods will have a set of Beads for actives, and if their beads are down, they are able to ult your ult, and in a lot of cases you will not be taking a favorable trade.
You want to play Ares when you see your enemy lock in something like a Merlin, and Cupid. These two gods do not have a cc immune ult, so they will be heavily reliant on their beads to keep them from being pulled. Its always nice if your team will get the beads for you with their own CC, but it is okay if you blink ult these carries to get their actives. You ult will come back up before the enemies beads are off of cooldown. Take advantage of this, point out to your team that X carry does not have beads, and either look to pick this person off, or force a gold fury fight, or fire giant fight. If the carry steps up you are then able to ult them, and they will be pulled back into you, and die from the follow up on your team.
You are usually going to pick Ares as a counter pick into gods that do not have CC immune ults as we discussed above. So this pick is best left till your 4th or 5th pick in the draft, otherwise the enemy will see your Ares pick early enough to build around you, and you will be useless during your game.
