BEWARE, this game gets me salty in ways we all have experienced, and I take my anger out writing this. if you are uncomfortable with cursing or pure saltiness, just look at the build and move on with your life.
As a noob to smite, one of my first games I got raped by a Bellona, and I tried her out. it was only until god rank 10 I learned the real way to play this broken god of war.
before I always built one way, a lot of tank with a bit of utility. it let me not die as much, but not many kills in return. it allowed me to learn this great game. now, it happened again, I got my *** kicked by the god i thought I mastered. before I used my abilities to do EVERYTHING, now I learned to focus her basic attack. this allowed me to succeed in both kills and not dying. This is my guide to being a successful Bellona player.
with my favourite build, the first build, there are many pros, but also many cons
i know some people will be like "what the hell does this guy think he's doing, not focusing one skill" and others will be like "wait he added skills?" well there is always a reason (unless you are a professional). all of bellona's abilities are very useful, but it is mostly decided by the user.
the 1st ability, shield bash, is not a good use for an escape. however, the slow it gives is a good way to catch up to a fleeing enemy. after the use of this ability, bellona keeps the sheild that will build block stacks, that will absorb basic attacks. this is good to charge assassins of the start so you can absorb the first few hard hits.
Bellona's 2, bledgeon, is your primary source of wave clear. when clearing lanes, use the spin in the middle of the lane and land on the archers. once the hammer is out, it will hit all the enemies in melee range, like nike's basic attack (my other favorite warrior). this ability is a good combo after you ult several enemies.
i like to focus the scourge because of its use along with fatalis and frost-bound hammer. upgrading the 3 will increase the health gained after every third strike, while the others are damage scaling. i favor this because of the increased sustain it gives without needing to get a life steal item.
The thing that bellona is most known for, her ult. Your in a team fight and you hear "RALLY HERE!" and then it turns the fight around as people start to die. this ult is a leap, a great escape, that is larger than mot other leaps. My favorite part is the stun. this stun can hit a small amount of people, but what you do next is what will kill everyone. the flag will increase physical protections and power by a considerable amount, allowing an increase of your next actions.
some may be thinking, "why did i read this far into this build?" or "this better be good, i could be living life right now". well it gets as good from here. months of playing around with different gods, play styles, and people helped me know this game.
this wide verity of items to build with isn't me adding as much **** as i could, but it is strategic placement.
i love playing joust and seeing my team mates back every 30 seconds from loss of health or mana early game. well, laugh at them with me by building the emerald talisman. this item gives you MP5 and HP5, giving a lot of sustain. this will also be upgraded to stone of Gaia, a much larger sustain item for a cheap price (800 after emerald talisman).
shield of regrowth is now more useful. in season 4, it has cool down and health. i have recently found out that the passive of this item activates on the third strike of bellona's 3. this is extremely useful if you are chasing someone, after the third hit you gain 40% more movement speed. this included with hastens fatalis and frost bound hammer will make everyone on the other team hate you.
sovereignty is a nice item for everyone. this way you get the HP5 and health while your team gets that nice little bit of sustain too.
so you know how movement speed is a thing, well that's where boots come in. these cheap items make the world of differences. then some **** is like "boots are useless, just get fatalis and stone cutting sword". these items are the key to good early game. "Well actually, you build a health item first, you get boots as a second item", this is so you don't have to back every 30 seconds with sustain (plus a wee bit of health so you can survive not having boots).
to decide the choice of what boots to choose, read the following:
warrior tabi; these are a good source of power if you are building the piece of **** build or a brusery type build. they don't have anything fancy to them, just you're standard boots.
ninja tabi; these are good if you want to have more attack speed with a more tank style build. the cost being 1500, it is nice to get these and get on with your day. the tim bit of mana will help if you are focusing basic attack more than using abilities to have that little extra when the time comes.
reinforced boots; these arn't advised considering the recommended starter item has health. the passive would allow you to abosrb a wee bit more hits before the "oh ****!" moment. I don't EVER build these so you would be on your own, tell me how to use them well.
being able to have this extra utility will sometimes make the world of differences. it will the difference between securing kills and staying alive. not many of these items have fancy passives so they are to the point, how i like my women...
breastplate of valor; my favorite cooldown item for it's sheer tankyness. it allows me to survive loki bursts (and other ******** assassins) and have my abilities at the ready. it gives mana and MP5 (thanks season 4 patches) so i never run out of mana, and when i do, it comes right back (improves if you get stone of Gaia or shield of regrowth). this helps your sustain to maximize and use the heavenly kit Bellona was blessed with.
Jotunn's wrath: this is one of the best cooldown items if you don't want the extra tank and just want pure power. this allows you to get a high amount of cooldown with penetration. this is a good item because it is usually my only pen item.
shogun's kusari: this new beautiful item allows you to gain more attack speed for you and your allies. it gives the cool downs and magical protections, a close opposite for breastplate in this context.
Shield of regrowth: if protections isn't your thing and you didn't buy this first, this is a good option. the passive activates on the third hit with the scourge basic attacks, being the only ability that heals. this item wouldn't be recommended if a enemy is building quins sais (deals 4% of targets maximum health in extra damage).
this is where everyone will hate you. getting the combination of both hastened fatalis and frostbound hammer will allow you to follow them with your basic attacks. using shield of regrowth with this combination, you will win the majority of your 1v1s if they aren't fed by stupid teammates. sure bellona will work fine without your focus on your basic attacks, but they will be your best option to bring the piece of **** aspects out of bellona.
When this item is built, it is usually pretty end game, the hunters and mages almost one shot the assassin. your team is raging because the Loki is being a piece of **** always ulting them and bursting them down while you're like "lol, I'm a tank". It's iffy, but fun to build a nice item like this.
death bringer: I have a friend who always cringes when I put crits on warriors, but to be honest, I would put crits on guardians if I could (polynomicon). this item truly shines when you have more than 20% critical chance but it is a nice punch to a random hit. "why would you bother with crits on Bellona", well when you crit over 500 with a single basic attack it is a wee bit satisfying.
bloodforge: hmm, sustain with 75 extra physical power, yes plz. The amount of cheesy plays possible with Bellona is stupid, and this is a great way to save your ***. it will increase the damage on all of your abilities and make crits (if you build them in the 4th slot) stupid.
Titans bane: there is nothing more stupid than stupid tanks kicking your *** because there too broken. "hey look, it's a Ymir with over 3000 health and almost 2 shots me", this is a good "f*ck you" to those pricks.
malice: "hey look, i got a good early crit and the rest of my basic attacks do 75% more damage on the rest of my basic attacks", yeah it's that stupid.
There is nothing worse than a Bellona without a war to fight. this is why I stay out of 1v1s (unless its in a 5v5 game mode) because Bellona is difficult to play by yourself against someone with a good early game. I used to love clash, but they ruined it by having a ****ty gold gain so by the time your lvl 20 you only have 4 and a half items. I was in a game for an hour of painful clash against pieces of ****, and we only won 14 worshipers for a chunk of my soul. but enough rambling, here is how you put the knowledge given to use in every non-piss off game mode.
DON'T LET YOUR TEAM MATES BE ******S, that's what you're for. you should start with a bit of tank so you don't feed the other team. have them push your tower so out of nowhere you can 'rally here' on their dumb ***es. you can solo bull demo around lvl 12 (4 items). At LVL 16, where you should have your all your items if all goes well you have no bounds. towers are jokes and phoenix are diveable. Teammates should be gods who can take advantage of your piece of **** nature that can deal lots of damage while you take the hits. I would suggest little ***** gods like Ra and Cronos who have harder to hit abilities when they see them coming. Pairing up with healer like Aphrodite or Hel is just mean.
this is where the nerds live. you will succeed the best in a solo or mid lane position. grab an Aphrodite and go support will just piss everyone off. grab the stone of Gaia as soon as possible to out sustain your opponent. clear lane and check camps. DON'T FOLLOW LOW PEOPLE, it is stupid to do this in this game mode, especially when you don't know where the jungler is.
if they go back, you can take the camps on your side, do tower damage, or help another team fight. go back when you kill them, you should take a decent beating from attacking the opposing solo laner, so grab your next items and wards and prepare to kill them again. if you don't go back after every kill (every 2 if you are dominating) the enemy will be ahead in states given from items.
when you get to the enemy phenix, help the other lanes. if you got here before the rest of your team you should have the lvl advantage. if the other solo if pushing, yell at the jungler to take him out with you so he wants to go back to arena where he belongs.
you are the lead person of pissing people off in teamfights, being a tanky wrecking ball of the front lines.
no one cares if you're a tank. grab one tanky item, boots, fatalis, and 3 crit items. at this point your abilities are used for their CC. be the in your face god she was meant to be. sure the original build works, it works well in fact, but this is where you play around with the variables i gave you. lead your team to victory by ult comboing 3 people to half healt, ready to be picked off by your team. Bellona, in my opinion, is the goddess of arena.
This is my pro guide on how to play Bellona, she is one of my favourite Gods for her offensive capabilities. I hope for dear god I didn't wasn't a good portion of my day i could be grinding worshipers to help people play this amazing god.
you can find me on PSN as Shorty6252, tell me if I helped you (or in the comments below). I would love to do another guide on another one of my mains if I did well in this one.
May the gods of old be in your favour.
