Build Summary

Notes Pretty flexible first item

Abyssal stone first if youre against a mage solo like poseidon

phalanx if against a physical

pestilence if against a zhong or hades or other sustain magical gods

all 3 are extremely strong items cheap and insane stat sticks.

Midgard and relic dagger are fine picks too as alternatives

Relics are personal preference all of them are kind of nice in their own way depending on the level of play, you can be interrupted in your ult so even cooldown beads isn't awful , just pick what you think is comfortable I've found pretty much all of them to be viable in their own way including sunder and thorns.

Overview

Hello, I will cut to the chase so people have a quick and easy to understand guide on how to play the latest character to grace Smite.

I tried to get this guide out fairly fast while also taking the time to understand the character from casual games all the way to conquest grandmaster lobbies. Firstly as a full disclaimer I have gone back and forth on how good he actually is, so I may update the guide at some point if there is some new tech i didn't consider but overall im pretty confident with my evaluation of Bake Kujira.

As for the character he is a solo lane only character, he is basic sttack focused which is in a aoe circle around so you cant miss basics essentially increasing his ease of use for newer players. He is very adept at winning lane and he has several flaws that hold him back from being extremely good which I will get into.

Abilities

Passive
Enemies that hard Crowd Control Bake Kujira are Cursed. If an enemy is already Cursed, the duration is refreshed and increases in strength. Bake Kujira converts Protections from Items and Abilities into Basic Attack damage and converts Attack Speed into Haste. Attack Speed and Item Passives do not benefit his Basic Attacks.

What this entails is essentially much like jorm he cannot proc any basic attack items like deaths toll or manikins or animosity meaning you will want to avoid those items. He does however benefit from basic attack damage increases like from diamond arrow so that is worth keeping in mind.

Lifesteal has diminished effect on his basics so avoid it,the more protections you have the stronger his basics become so you certainly want to go tany as possible, and this is interesting the more attack speed you have the more haste you get with 100 percent attack speed equalling to 100 haste. He does not benefit from attack speed in any other way.

And you get protections the more enemies you hit with your basics.

Pretty strong passive plays into his kit well and is self explanatory.

1st Ability - Rough Waters

Bake Kujira imbues himself with cursed energy. When activated, Bake Kujira gains increased Basic Attack range and reduced Movement Penalty when Basic Attacking. He also gains a stack of Protections for each enemy hit with his Basic Attacks.

Also self explanatory just two things to keep in mind he can over cap on protections with this as it caps out to a pretty substantial 60 physical and 60 magical prots and he does get semi haste of 50 percent which you might think might mean you don't need to build attack speed but this is not the case for a reason ill get into later.

2nd Ability - Sonic Wave

Bake Kujira sends out a wave of cursed energy. Enemies hit are slowed, damaged, and Cursed. Enemies that are Cursed deal reduced damage for 6s. If a Cursed enemy is hit by this ability, the slow is doubled and their Curse becomes amplified. Bake Kujira

Build

You can go either spartan flag or arrow first, either is fine and up to personal preference, flag passive wont really work but the base stats are nice for the price and an early upgrade is good too, arrow you will have more damage but be a bit less tanky so yeah personal preference really i tend to go flag but either one is totally fine. If you go flag get war banner upgrade, spartan flag doesnt increase damage only power which is bad.

First item after starter imo should always either be phalanx, pestilence or abysal stone they all serve their own purpose, phalanx gives you everything you want from an item sustain, an ever stronger laning phase and attack speed for that haste you want. pestilence now has 15 hp5 and is even cheaper at 70 magical prots its an excellent pickup for laning vs magical sustain gods and the passive is kind of underrated i think, its certainly stronger item than contagion right now.

Second item you want Breastplate, it got nerfed but its still extrmeley strong for the sustain, prots and cooldowns at a cheap price, the glyph also syngersies really well with this characters kit especially if it procs while you're chanelling your ult.

3rd item you probably want shoguns here or berserkers i think shoguns is much better, berserkers has better stats but it doesnt help your team, at all and 5 percent mitigations isnt good so i think berserkers is a bit overrated even after the buff id rather just go phalanx.

4th item you get your starter here usually definetely banner not spartan flag its a great item for the team and for you.

5th item i think oni is a great pickup its 12 percent mitigations just for having
three enemies near you which happens all the time, i think its much better than berserkers and gives you some mana sustain.

6th item ill go pestilence if i didnt already have it or midgardian mail as in hifh level play kujira is vulnerable to ***asisns or hunters just bursting him down like kali or nem can stick to him and qins does melt anyone no matter how tanky they are he is a big target so you do want those prots and mits as the tankier you are the more damage you do. Maybe diamond arrow is more your thing thats also fine but hes such a big target i personally prefer being tankier

As for relics i like teleport to tower for obvious reasons in solo lane, and horrific or thorns the best they let me be an effective frtonline and allow me to be effective in my ult without being bursted down, sprint is also fine if you find yourself being slowed alot and they just walk out of your ult, and blink is also good but he isnt the best blink character i feel if you want that playstyle play relic dagger chaac and blink ult on cooldown.

Levelling order

Really simple

max the 3 as its your best source of damage and increases the stun length

then the 2 for similar reasons

finally the 1 as it doesnt really do much except more protections

Put points into the ult whenever you can

Overall Viability

With all that out of the way how good is he actually?

Overall id have him at B plus tier. The further up you go in mmr the harder time you will have having an impact once laning phase is done, he doesnt have great engage and i dont love blink on him as i dont think he can really afford to give up any item for relic dagger. His damage is fairly strong throughout all stages of the gsme but he is also a very easy target to burst and kill you need good positioning late game as his ult isnt the safety tool you would think it is its really more of a offensive option than a defensive one same with his 3 they can be used in a pinch but isnt the same as jorm who can just ult out whenever he wants.

What hes good at is winning lane and being a second tank that is rewarded with damage for going defence, he does struggle to get that damage off late vs coordinated teams but you can work around that with the right plays isn't the end of the world.

I feel hs is easy to learn hard to master newer players will do well in lane but will be lost late as they wont know how to impact fights late game so really depends on the player.

Ahhh nice thanks for creating the build and writeup. Good to see your take on him at release.

You mention his skill leveling and maxing the 3 first (outside of ult, where you level when possible). My concern with this is sort of as you say, he's not the tank some might think he would be, and with being able to be CCd easily, can be an easy target. The 2's poke is easy and doesn't sacrifice his 3 as a potential escape situationally, so I would tend to level the 2 before the 3 (though if my team was the obvious aggressor, I would probably focus on the 3 first).

Further thoughts on this are appreciated.

Hello, I think maxing the 2 is fine too, the main reasoning behind maxing the 3 is to increase that stun time which opens up an offensive option for your jungler that might want to gank and chain cc. Most of my games ive gone phalanx, into a double physical solo and jungler so i haven't really had to worry about ganks as my ult has been effective and I tend to ward quite a bit.

In saying that It is kinda like jummping on the wave as Cu so i see why it can be risky. I do think If its a physical solo into a magical jungler like AK in that case I would max the 2 as you'll need to play a bit safer in that case.

Thanks for pointing this out, I will update the guide once he is available in ranked and add to it.
