While Ares is a guardian and can do a great deal of tanking, that is not my particular style. I find that Ares helps excel and lead his team to victory best through use of his damage exploits. Not to mention I tend to out damage everyone on my team.
How you build Ares has to be situational in order to get the greatest possible start.
I have basically the same build for both circumstances, the only differences is the order you build items in.
This video should adequately address my approach -
In order to put out the highest damage potential, you are going to want to level your chains first (1) and his flames second (3)
His buff for defense (2) can be altogether ignored as it simply hinders Ares.
Pros -
Great damage
Innately tanky
Powerful ultimate
Many different play styles
Makes opponents vulnerable for team
Great one person focus damage
Cons -
Has no escapes
Can't handle a group of 3 or more easily alone
While you won't be spending too much time taking out creeps, don't ignore them if your team is low on health and needs help. Use your flames to do what damage you can, however their only true minion usage is for clearing a camp or taking out a siege tower. Still, don't fully ignore minions.
When your ultimate is up, make sure you keep track of who has their actives up and who doesn't.
Try and grab the largest group of enemies clustered together as possible.
You are going to want to pop their beads and run if you are alone, or pull them and place chains if you have an ally nearby.
I've never done a guide before, so I'm sure this was infantile.
If there are any truly outlandish peculiarities, notify me and I will look into them.
Best of wishes!
Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join session-based arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. Smite is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DotA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat. And, instead of clicking a map, you use WASD to move, dodge, and fight your way through the detailed graphics of SMITE's battlegrounds.

Thanks for that one bud, also added in a tentative 6th item, Divine Ruin, on the chance that their heals are overpowering.
