Introduction

God of Portals and Transitions

Thank you to everybody who has seen my other guides. This new one I bring to you is for Janus God of Portals and Transitions. I have been playing quite a few games with him lately and came across a really good build. I was watching some SPL(Smite Pro League), and saw the same build out of MLC Stealth. When I saw that, I knew I had to make a new Janus guide. I hope you guys all enjoy the build, let me know what you think.

Pros / Cons

Pros

+ Great in team fights
+ Best mobility for any mid(can get out of most situations)
+ Incredible utility
+ Most base mana for any mage
+ Global ultimate
+ Can chunk for a lot of damage
+ Can position yourself/team to dominate fights

Cons

+ No 0-100 potential
+ Average at best wave clear(can be inconsistent)
+ Very squishy

Skills

Passive
Any time Janus transitions through a portal or over a threshold he becomes aged and wizened, gaining additional magical scaling on his next ability cast.
-Magical Scaling: 25%

This passive will allow your abilities to do an additional 25% damage. This is a must before using any abilities on enemy gods. This will also help you clear minion waves in the early game. This will also make Through Space and Time do 225% normal damage at a distance of 800 or farther. That is when you can 0-100 someone.

First Ability
Janus creates a portal in the world. If placed on a wall, the portal will create a passage through to the other side of the wall that Janus or any Ally may use. The portal may be entered from either side, but closes after 1 use. If placed on the ground, enemies and Janus will fall into the portal, being teleported into the air above it. Enemies take damage upon landing, and are considered banished during the fall.
Damage: 80/130/180/230/280 (+60% of your magical power)
Wall Portal Duration: 5s
Banish Duration: 1.5s
Wall Portal Range: 100
Cost: 70 mana
Cooldown: 12 seconds

This gives Janus insane mobility. You really only want to use this as an escape more than a damaging ability. You will be able to portal through walls to help you better position yourself. It is very important to ward up around you though, make sure you don't portal into the enemy team(I've done that before). Be aware, if you fall through the portal, you are banished. This is good though against( Poseidon/ Scylla/ect). You can almost use it as an Greater Aegis. You can use this ability if an enemy god is chasing you. Lay that down just behind you, and that should buy you an extra 1 1/2 seconds.

Second Ability
Janus creates two unstable portals, far too small to fit into, and flings them forward dealing damage to enemies in their path. Enemies hit by both portals take 30% damage on the second hit.
Damage: 90/150/210/270/330 (+70% of your magical power)
This ability can deal up to 117/195/273/351/429 (+91% of your magical power)
Cooldown: 8 seconds
Cost: 70/75/80/85/90 mana

This is your main damaging ability, and it does a lot of damage. It does take some time to get used to the arc of the ability though. I recommend practicing some arena games to get used to it. Once you understand how to hit the enemy, you will see how op this ability really is. By level 4, if you have his passive active, you will almost be able to clear minion waves. In team fights, your main goal is really just to spam this ability. This will allow you to chunk health out of your enemies. Whether you get the kill or not, the enemy god will be dead.

Third Ability
Passive: Janus increases the movement speed of himself and allies each time they go through a portal or over a Threshold (max 2 stacks). Active: Janus opens a multi-dimensional rift. Enemies who pass over the rift are slowed, and marked with Phase. Targets in Phase take additional magical scaling damage when hit by Janus' damaging abilities. At max stacks, this ability's passive gives 20/30/40/50/60% Movement speed to Janus and allies.
Phase Slow: 20/25/30/35/40% for 3s
Movement Speed: 10/15/20/25/30% per Portal
Additional Scaling: 20/30/40/50/60
Rift Duration: 3/4/5/6/7
Cooldown: 15 seconds
Cost: 60/65/70/75/80 mana

This is [janus]] most underrated ability. Once you get this ability to rank 3, you will notice a big increase in your movement speed. As well as a big decrease for your enemies. Helpful hint: Make sure to walk over the threshold before using an ability, it will increase the damage of your next ability by 25%. When enemies walk over the threshold, they also take additional damage as well. If you combo these up, you will be chunking for half of there HP during mid and late games.

Ultimate
Janus blasts a ball of multi-dimensional energy across the battlefield, burning a portal into every surface it encounters within range 500. These portals last 10s, may be used by allies, and do not vanish after the first use. Enemies hit by the energy ball take damage, increasing in magical scaling the further the energy travels. Janus is immune to crowd control while firing.
Damage: 200/300/400/500/600 (+50% of your magical power)
Distance Scaling: 200% of your magical power at distance greater than 800
Cooldown: 90 seconds
Cost: 100 mana

This ability separates Janus from all other mid laner's in the game. Janus is the rotation king because of his ultimate. It's also really fun to snipe people as well. When going to gank a lane, it is very important to aim your ultimate correctly. If you want to engage the enemy, you want to aim behind them. If you want to disengage, aim in front of them. You can also to this to split push lanes as well.

Items

Starting Items

This is a pretty basic and common start for most mages. Since you won't have any lifesteal, you are going to need to maximize the passive from Vampiric Shroud(make sure you get the last hits on minions). You want to then buy Lost Artifact. This will allow you to build your Doom Orb as fast as possible. Then, you want to buy the two pots to give you additional sustain in lane. Don't use the pots until your under 50% mana or health.

Damage, Mana, MP5
This is an item I feel is drastically under rated. It also works out that Doom Orb is amazing on Janus. The only down side with doom orb, is that when you die, you lose half of your stacks. Well unless you mess up with your positioning, you don't die as Janus. There is no better value in the game. When you have full stacks, you get an additional 140 magic power, 200 mana, and 7 MP5. You get all of that for only 1790g. Great value. It is very important though to build up your stacks as fast as possible. You won't notice a big spike in your damage until you are over 30 stacks. Buying this as your first item will give you a huge power advantage over your counterpart in the mid lane. Helpful tip: If the jungler is paying attention, they might try and camp your lane to make it difficult to build up stacks. When in the lane, stay next to the lane wall. If you get ganked, quickly Portal yourself out of harms way.

Magic power, CDR, Movement speed
For this utility build, you want to get your CDR as your second item. Most people prefer to get Shoes of the Magi over Shoes of Focus, and I understand why. You get and additional 35 magic power as well as 200 mana. That is the reason we rush Doom Orb. This way you will be able to get the benefits of Shoes of Focus, and still have the magic power and mana. Once you have your shoes built, you will have a tremendous amount of utility. You will be able to be a little more aggressive at this point.

Magic power, CDR, MP5
For the utility build, you want to cap off you CDR as soon as possible. Buying Chronos' Pendant will allow you to max out your CDR at 40%, as well as giving you a decent amount of magic power (75 magic power). One underrated part about this item, is the massive amount of MP5 you get (25 MP5). This will give you a massive amount of sustain at this point. At this point in the game you will have 44MP5. That is pretty much like having infinite mana buff. Helpful Tip: Once you have Chronos' Pendant built, you will be able to use Through Space and Time every 54 seconds. Because of the low cooldown, you want to be very active with your rotations. Put pressure on the other lanes, as well as jungle buffs. If you are really far ahead after you build Shoes of Focus (3 or more kills), it will be worth it to buy Rod of Tahuti instead. This will allow you to snowball. It only works if you are ahead by a lot though.

Magic power, Magic penitration
Once you have [[obsidian shard}} built, you will notice a significant increase in the amount of damage that you can deal. This is when you have to make sure that you are there for all the team fights. You will be able to start chunking potions of there health. You really want to be spamming your abilities. You will be able to really take over the game at this point because of your mobility paired with your damage.

Magic power, Lifesteal
There are a couple of options that you can go with for your 5th item. I like Bancroft's Talon because of the massive amount of magic power you get. The lifesteal is great but you don't notice it as much because you don't have consistent damage. The second best option would be to get magi's blessing(If your facing a lot of cc, go with this option).

Magic power, MP5
Not much to say other than you must buy this as your 5th or 6th item. It's to good for mages not to build this item. You will do a massive amount of damage once you buy Rod of Tahuti.

Ranked Play

Early Game

Because of the fact that you are buying Doom Orb, you want to play a bit passively. Focus on build up your stacks. Make sure to not be in a position to get ganked if you don't have ward coverage. Also make sure to stay close to the walls in the lane. If you get in a jam, portal to the other side and get back into position. If you need to, stall out the lane. You will be more powerful later in the game, so don't feed early on. Make sure to be in lane for the 3 min/ 6 min/ 9 min harpies. Your presence is very valuable if a fight occurs. You should be able to out sustain them just because Janus has the most base mana of any magical god.

Mid Game

This is when you want to start becoming really annoying for the enemy. Rotate, rotate, rotate, that is key for Janus. Try to set up ganks whenever possible with your ultimate. Even if you may not go over there. Still ult, to allow your jungler to go through your portals and get to the lane that much quicker. Have constant communication with your team if possible. Once you do a couple of rotations, the enemy team will be hesitant to be aggressive in there lane or with ganks. This will allow your team members to have more breathing room, allowing them to do a little more. That is the goal of this utility Janus. Help your team so much, that even if your lane may not be pushed, the other two lanes will be. If you do those few basic things, you will notice your winning percentage start to climb.

Late Game

This is when you are going to mainly be grouped up with your team. You want to look for a team fight, win that, get fire giant, then push to win(best case scenario). If things get interesting, remember Janus can split push. When the enemy team dives on you, just use your ultimate to get to the other side of the map. If you need to, do this every time you get your ultimate off cooldown. This will put a lot of pressure on the enemy team. Hopefully your teammates will be smart enough to know to pressure the other lanes.

Cool guide! I like the build and you descriptions and such, gets the job done in a rather short space which is nice. If you're going to add more, I'd recommend expanding upon when to use your item alternatives (eg: you may buy warlock's sash if you have a difficult laning opponent and are more likely to die and lose your Doom Orb stacks).

Also, one other small note: I do like your skill order (always level Threshold before Portal, it's just so much better), but I would even argue leveling it up before leveling up your ultimate a second time. Most of the time Janus uses his ult it's not for the damage anyway, and leveling it up only adds 100 to its base power.

But yeah, still great guide! +1 from me.
