Nu Wa is a mage that has been out of meta for quite some time, and because of that many people do not know how to play her properly anymore.
Nu Wa has high ability scaling on Shining Metal (almost her entire source of damage) so benefits from high power builds with 40% cooldown. However in the current meta this is usually very hard to obtain, the solution being a less bursty and more poke and team fight oriented mage (think Nox but less damage and cc).
Nu Wa's base combo is an immediate 2 into 3, followed by an auto cancel 1 with auto attacks after that. This will usually get the most damage off, and secures the most consistent damage (If you have her passive up then fire an auto prior to this combo to ensure all damage hits)
She has very poor escape abilities, with her 1 speeding her up and cloaking her, and her ult allowing her to move through player deployables. So basically you have to have good positioning all while maintaining a close distance to the fight to get your damage and cc off.
Nu Wa's laning phase can be very rocky, as she has low clear compared to other mages, no sustain, and is an easy target for ganks.
My solution to these problems is to do something taboo to most mages, use your escape as a clearing tool. By level 4-6 a Shining Metal and Mysterious Fog (along with a few autos on brute minions) will clear wave fairly fast. The key here is to Shining metal as soon as you can hit the whole wave, then auto cancel into your mysterious fog (facing towards the enemy wave), then immediately turning back and keeping your distance while autoing the front minions. I find this better than using shining metal twice on the wave and using fog for escape since by the time anyone can gank you after this your 2 3 combo will still be up, and a 1.1-1.4 second stun works better than 10% movement speed that you can only get for about 1 second (since Nu Wa outspeeds her fog).
By the time Mysterious Fog is maxed it tends to one shot the wave in a Mage build, which leaves Shining Metal up to use as cc for a gank.
Always keep your distance from both the wave and the damage of the enemy god. Even without an escape, Nu Wa is very hard to chase down without a dash, stun, or cleanse.
- Shining Metal contains almost all of her damage, NOT her minion ability. The explosion damage is controlled by the level of Shining Metal.
- Your explosion combo loses around 60-70% of it's damage if you don't hit the enemy god with Shining Metal (The explosion is only a small amount of the damage)
- Nu Wa's Explosion damage DOES NOT STACK. Meaning exploding 1 minion does the exact same amount as exploding all 3! That is why I stall upgrading her 2 after the second level.
- Nu Wa DOES NOT need massive penetration builds! Her minions (max rank) reduce protections by 45! She only needs 10-20 flat penetration for Fire Shards/Shining metal out of combo.
- Weaving autos as Nu Wa is anywhere between 30 and 60 percent of her damage depending on her level and build, she is one of the most important mages to auto weave on!
- Using Nu Wa's ult in the middle of a fight (even without secure) can be very helpful, as it can early proc items like bulwark, book of the dead, and asi. And can allow people like Kali, or any god with bloodforge or mail of renewal to go in safer and get a more secure kill.
- Use your root auto to escape stick-on gods like Osiris and Kali!

Sure you can go Pen Boots, Book of Thoth, Chronos Pendant, Spear of Deso, Ob Shard, and Soul Reaver (in no particular order) like any other mage, swap out an item or two and the build transfers to every god.
I'm merely putting up a build that I have had success with and had fun with.
Getting Ob Shard is less than great since youre taking off 45 prots with your minions, you lose anywhere from 7 - 15% prot shred from the item.
Want the Math?
Take into account my build at level 20 minus one item (Ob Shard in this case)
The total magical power is 623 (follow?)Total flat pen is 0
Add in Ob Shard. MP = 693, No Flat Pen, plus a varying Percent Pen.
Let's put this against a base 48 protection God (Mage) In Her 2, 3, 1 combo, with 2 weaved autos.
Minion Damage will be held constant with both builds since Ob Shard does not work at negative protections.
Shining Metal Damage:
((250 + 75%MP) * 100)/(100 + ((48 - prot reduc)*%pen) = Dmg
((250 + 520) * 100)/(100 + (48 - 60)*0.85) = Dmg (Since Flat Pen applies first, cancel %pen)
(770 * 100)/(100 - 12) = Dmg
(77,000) / (88) = 875
Explosion
(32,300) / (88) = 367
Fog (1 Tick)
(49,600) / (88) = 563
2 Autos
(17,360) / (88) = 197 * 2 = 394
Total Damage Ob Shard vs Squishy = 2,019
Now a 160 Protection Guardian
Shining Metal:
77,000 / (100 + (160 - 60) * 0.74 ) = 442
Explosion:
32,300 / 174 = 185
Fog:
49,600 / 174 = 285
2 Autos:
17,360 / 174 = 100 * 2 = 200
Ob Shard build vs Bruiser = 1,112
Now Let's look at a build with a Similar one using Bancroft's Talon at 150 power
Total MP = 773
Vs Squishy 48 prot:
Shining Metal:
83,000 / 88 = 943
Explosion:
34,300 / 88 = 390
Fog:
53,700 / 88 = 610
Autos:
21,960 / 88 = 250 * 2 = 500
Power build vs squishies = 2,443 dmg (424 More than No Ob Shard)
And finally power build vs 160 warrior
Shining Metal:
83,000 / 200 = 420 (lost 20 dmg)
Explosion:
34300 / 200 = 172 (lost 13 dmg)
Fog:
53700 / 200 = 269 (lost 16 dmg)
Autos:
21960 / 200 = 110 * 2 = 220 (Gained 20 dmg)
Total Damage Power build vs Bruiser = 1073 (39 less than Ob Shard)
With a half cocked Bancroft's passive. You deal a whopping 39 dmg less to tanks, and 424 More damage to squishies. Now yes as the protections scale you will do less damage in the long run, but up until around 155 protections, you're going to do more with a half passive bancrofts, a full passive bancrofts would get you to about 170 protections until ob shard starts taking a slow lead. (And even then you aren't meant to go for tanks, thats the adc)
I've proven my math to you (which i had already done). If you still believe that Ob Shard fits better into the build than another power item, then so be it.
Also PS soul reaver, not that great of an item. 2% mitigated vs Ethereal's 6% true
(I'm not ignorant I know they know what they're doing and I did watch all of it still)
Also the solo build (like it or not) works.
You really want that much pen on a god who's kit doesn't have enough damage to kill tanks? Ob Shard is great on characters like Pos who have enough damage. Nu Wa's kit can burst squishies, and with the 45 flat pen from her 2 she does that well. Of course you get Ob Shard when the situation presents itself. This build isn't going to hold your hand through every scenario, same as if they have a hel you get anti heal.
You want to knock a non-meta build cause it isn't meta? I'm almost 100% sure the builds on here aren't "post the most meta build possible for this god" its "Post YOUR build". This is my build, this build gets me a lot of kills and wins, I have fun with this build so if you want to trash it go ahead, get a life first though.
