Introduction

Hello, I'm Gilder103. I've been playing Smite for a while, and lurking this site. Sadly, while there are a lot of guides, I've never quite found one that I've liked. And with the introduction of stat points, there's a lot to be desired when it comes to God guides. Figured it's time to make my own.

So let's start with Odin. He's easy to pick up, fun to play, and pretty flexible with how you want him to perform. This guide will detail how to STAY TANKY and still DISH OUT DAMAGE.

Pro's

  • Free armor and HP5
  • AOE attack speed buff
  • Good at getting in and out
  • Ultimate can secure kills
  • Ultimate can save teammates

Con's
  • Bad Ultimates can murder your team
  • Easily becomes a high priority target
  • Small mana pool
  • Passive doesn't help in combat

Skills

birds of wisdomBirds of Wisdom
Passive: Odin's ravens scout an increased radius around himself, doubling his minimap vision radius and gaining visibility of enemies within that radius.

A very useful passive, even though you may not always acknowledge it. Having visibility through the jungle and over walls is very handy, especially when playing aggressively.

Lunge
Active: Odin Lunges to his target location, doing 140 / 180 / 220 / 260 / 300 (+40% of your physical power) physical to all nearby enemies.

Cost: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 mana.

Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 s.

A good skill for initiation and escape, this skill is usually maxed last since it only offers damage. Very effective early game when combined with Gungnir's Might. Lunge on top of them, then wail them.

Odin's Shout
Active: Odin gives a commanding roar, rallying his allies. Odin and his allies gain an attack speed buff of 15 / 25 / 35 / 45 / 55% for 7 s.

Cost 60 mana.

Cooldown: 20 / 19 / 18 / 17 / 16 s.

What a great ability! The buff is great even at lower levels, it lasts for a whopping 7 seconds, and even affects your whole team (assuming they're in the area. We'll max this second for its boost to everyone's DPS.
Tip: This skill affects minions, so go ahead and do it! Need to push a lane, but want to help an ally in danger? Boost those soldiers and get moving!

Gungnir's Might
This power, while used passively, provides 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 protection from physical attacks and 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 HP5. Upon activation of this power, he does a speeding melee attack that does 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+100% of your physical power) physical damage and slows all enemies around him by 30% for 2 seconds, but he loses the passive bonus while on cooldown.

Cost: 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 mana.

Cooldown 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 s.

This is your early game bread and butter. This move provides you with sustain, durability, and CC. Not to mention a whopping 100% attack damage ratio. Max this baby first and never look back.
Tip: Odin swings his spear 360 degrees. Don't be afraid to use this if there's someone behind you. You may be surprised, and so will they.

Ring of Spears
Active: Odin summons a wall of spears, blocking all normal movement. Odin gains +60 protection, +35 / 55 / 75 / 95 / 115 physical power and immunity to stun/fear/silence/root while inside the ring. Pressing the button again will bring down the ring.

Cost: 100 mana.

Cooldown: 75 s.

Proper usage of this skill can win the game. Improper usage can lose the game and piss off a lot of people. When this move is up, you become much more resilient and powerful, and have immunity to all CC. Combine that with your attack speed buff and most people caught in the arena are dead.
Tip: This move's weakness is God's that can jump or teleport. If looking to trap a god that do one of those, keep an eye out for them to use that skill, then trap them right after. Or use this move to single out God's that don't have escape maneuvers.

Items

One great thing about Smite right now is how many items we have, and the amount of customization we can do to make our Gods just right. The items I build capitalize on POWER, ATTACK SPEED, and HEALTH. Stats should be bought to COVER WEAKNESS WHILE LOSING, or CAPITALIZE ON STRENGTHS WHILE WINNING.

Warrior Tabi
Given Odin's early game durability and sustain from Gungnir's Might, starting with rank two boots is viable. These boots give us everything we need to build a strong DPS with attack speed, physical power, and crit chance. I like to get my rank three boots as quickly as possible, but that is not necessary.

The Executioner
Attack speed and power, along with reducing your enemy's armor. This is an essential item on DPS Odin, and it also benefits your whole team. This item really shines during Ring of Spears, where your damage is boosted and the enemy can't escape from your relentless attacks.

Frostbound Hammer
Another essential item for your DPS Odin. This will give you substantial health, a little power, but the passive is the best part. Every successful melee attack slows the enemy. Great for chasing, and an effective substitute for Gungnir's Might when you can't afford to lose the passive bonus.

Soul Eater
Time to build some sustain, but we don't want to sacrifice any DPS for it. Soul Eater is a great compromise offering health, attack speed, and lifesteal. A good item on its own, but it also offers lifesteal and attack speed to your teammates! Combine that with Odin's Shout, and any well balanced team will receive a huge boost in power!

Qin's Blades
I'll be straight with you, I love this item. I often buy it even when I shouldn't. So if you choose to overlook this item, fill the slot with a more tanky item or something, I won't be too upset. But let's level for a second. Not only does this item give you attack speed, physical power, and health (I'm sold already), it also comes with a chance to deal 10% of the opponent's MAX life every hit. This is magical damage, making it hard to build to counter you. One way or another, your damage is going to go through. And with your amazing attack speed, I guarantee you'll get your money's worth from this item.

Ankh of the Golem
This is our icing on the cake. Another substantial increase to health, we also get attack speed and some physical protection. But what makes it all worth it is the passive, extra physical power based on your max health! Keep in mind, this bonus will NOT make you do a billion damage, nor will it make you totally unkillable. What it will do is increase your survivability while keeping your damage output competitive.

As I revise this guide, I'll be sure to add more options for items and reasoning behind whether I'd recommend them or not. This is my core build however.

Conquest Tactics

When Laning

While laning as Odin, your teammate will rely on you to take punishment. You get free HP5, and physical protection, so don't be afraid to play aggressively. Keep the attention off your squishy lane partner, and create openings for them to attack.
  • Lunge behind opponents and use Gungnir's Might to slow them down
  • If an opponent retreats into the jungle, your passive will help you keep tabs. You can see them if they start attacking jungle camps, Lunge over the wall and KILL them!
  • Use Odin's Shout to give a boost to your minions and your partner when going in for a kill, or when counter pushing for a surprising turnaround.
  • If your partner has a reliable disable or pull, use your ultimate to compliment there's. Example: Arachne pulls an enemy under the tower. Use your ultimate to ensure they don't escape, or if they have a leap, use it to trap them when they jump away.

When Roaming
Odin makes a great roamer and a ganker with his HP5, Lunge, and Ring of Spears.
  • When ganking for an ally, run behind the enemy and use Gungnir's Might. They'll be slowed and damaged, and will probably use their escape maneuver. Save your Lunge to catch up to them, or to leap over a wall and cut them off.
  • When looking to cut an enemy off, you can use Ring of Spears as a wall. Useful if you're not looking to take the kill yourself, or if you aren't sure you can fight the enemy on your own.
  • Odin is not the fastest God. While chasing an enemy, don't give up. Even though you may not be able to catch them, your passive birds of wisdom will help keep visibility up for your team, possibly saving everyone's life.

In Teamfights
Teamfights are tough. Everything revolves around how you land your ultimate. My advice: Don't be the initiator. A lot of Odin's will start a teamfight by jumping in, popping the ultimate and going to town. This can work, but it's more for straight tank Odins and its a very risky move.
  • Look intimidating. You can take a decent punch, protect your wimpier Gods. Let the enemy team know that one wrong step will put them on the bad end of your spear.
  • If an opponent is singled out, capitalize. You can slow, buff your team, reduce their armor. Once the opponents have a disadvantage, that's your time to shine.
  • Don't play fair. If it's a 5v5, don't use that ult. Use the ult when you know you've got the upper hand. Ring of Spears is a RING OF PAIN, make sure whoever is unlucky enough to get caught in it has no chance of making it alive.
  • If things aren't going so well, you may have to take one for the team. Ring of Spears persists after Odin's death, so if your team is in risk of being wiped out... Be the bigger man. Trap the enemy team, give them hell for a couple seconds, allow your team to make a hasty retreat. They'll thank you for it.

Summary

Well, that's about it. This is my first guide, and I thank you for reading it. I plan to come back when I've got some more time to update the guide, especially focusing around stat points and focus. But that's all the time I have today, so feel free to comment and tell me what you think. Good luck out there.

Hey Claydude, I just checked that item out. A teammate of mine had already built Soul Eater, so I figured I'd experiment.

eye of retaliation was an awesome item, that gave me some serious punch. I didn't like how it didn't help with anything but damage, but for a straight DPS Odin it works very well.

The match went for a while, I ended up building a Bulwark of Hope instead of my usual Ankh of the Golem. I was pretty pleased with the results! I'll screw around with this some more, I think there's some serious potential!
