This is my third Ra guide and my build has evolved with each guide. I believe my build has been perfected for midlaning with Ra (at least perfected with my playstyle). I have 2 seperate midlane builds, 1 for laning vs physical damage and one build for laning vs magical damage. Both builds focus on getting 30 magical penetration early to enable true damage on enemies without added protection from their items. Most likely you will be laning vs mages, so a void stonewill be bought second, giving you 50 magic power, 60 magic protection as well as 30 penetration (for true damage). Against Physical damage gods (like anhur, cupid or artemis) I buy the Spear of Magussecond, granting 300 hp, 30 magic power and 30 penetration. Early on with Ra you should be relying on pushing hard and letting your minions do damage to the enemy midlaner. When you get penetration, you can be more aggressive, and focus on getting kills and ganking.
After the void stone, start building your Breastplate of Valor. The cooldown reduction is a must with Ra, and the physical protection will help you later on in the game when your fighting against their entire team, rather than just your lane opponent.
Now you have speed, magic, and physical protection, cooldown reduction and 30 penetration, time to increase that magic power. Rod of Tuhitiis the best item in the game for this. Well worth the high cost, the Rod will also save you money with it's mana regen.
At this point in the game you have everything you need, time to stack on some more damage. For my fifth item I buy the Obsidian Shard. 70 magic power and 45% penetration will give you the ability to take down enemies who invest in magic protection.
The last item can vary but I usually buy the Polynomicon. The Polynomicon will add to your mana pool, give you added magic power, magic lifesteal, and more importantly it's added ability. The polyshots add a nuke to Ra's arsenal and your combos should change to include some polyshots for huge amounts of added damage to sap enemy health pools.
Finished build (at level 20): 1745 hp, 2315 mana, 462.5 magic power, 135 physical protection, 90 magical protection, 75 magic penetraion, 10% magical lifesteal, 20% cooldown reduction, and Polyshots.
After the Spear of Magus, build the Breastplate of Valor. Now you can withstand Anhur's, Cupid or Artemis' combos and be able to bring them down with your's. Time to play more aggressively.
Void Stone.
Rod of Tuhiti.
Polynomicon.
This build offers slightly less magic power and penetration, because your trading the obsidian shard for the Spear of Magus, but you'll have 300 extra health.
In both builds finishing your Boots of the magi isn't a top priority and should be done at your convenience.
Finished Build (level 20): 2045 hp, 2315 mana, 412.5 magic power, 135 physical protection, 90 magical protection, 60 magic penetration, 10% magical lifesteal, 20% cooldown reduction, and polyshots.
With the release of the new patch I decided I'd create a new guide. I've abandoned my old build's and the chronos pendant for much more well rounded Ra. The downside is that I lack mp5 early and need to spend precious gold on mana pots. I grab 3 pots at the very start and from then on every time I recall I buy 2 pots. Mana pots are well worth the gold, especially with Ra. just being around to collect gold from an entire creep wave will net you 138 gold. Getting last hits, whic his very easy with Ra, will net you 204 gold. 1 Mana pot is 50 gold and grants 150 mana - thats good for a solar blessing celestial beam combo which will get you last hits. With last hits on minions you can net up to 204 gold on one creep wave, well worth the 50 gold. You also will be able to stay in lane longer, possibly grabbing enemy kills, tower kill as well as preventing the enemy from pushing on your tower. I do not stop buying mana pots until I get level 2 Rod of Tuhiti, because of the mana regen it gives you.
Below you can seem how I use Solar Blessing to clear a creep wave at level 1
On the next image you can see Ra standing in his Solar Blessing aoe to buff himself while casting celestial beam to burn down some minions
Just a simple Divine Light about to slow Anubis and set him up from some pain courtesy of the Sun God
Below you can see the range of Searing Pain as I'm about to fry Agni (I actually miss)
Both videos are shot with Live commentary. My section on laning, jungling, and more on skills and item selection will be covered in my video guide. For more reading material on these subjects, read my older guides. There is some skipping around in the video, my apologies for the poor quality, it's my first video.
The second video is a little cleaner and shows the same game from level 11 on. Hope you enjoy.
With the last patch some considerable changes have come to abilities. Creeping curse and girdle of might is always strong on Ra. Creeping curse, paired with divine light will slow enemies to a crawl, making them easy targets for your damaging abilities. Girdle of Might is good cuz damage is well good. Most times your ability slots will be spent reacting to enemy gods. If they are strong in crowd control, buy purification beads. If it makes sense to buy Aegis Amulet, then buy one...
