Since Thoth is a more auto attack focused mage, we're going to play to that and be more aggressive. His attacks have a fairly longer range when his Glyph of Pain is active, giving him opportunities to harass the opposing laner, or capitalize on Death's Toll at a further range, if the lane isn't going in your favour.
Alternatively, if there are 3 or more minions in the lane, you can use Hieroglyphic Assault in order to regain some fast HP/Mana as it has strong synergy with Death's Toll as well.
We will prioritize Hieroglyphic Assault because that will be our most consistent source of damage other than our vanilla auto attacks. It will be an excellent source of sustain once we get some life steal/spell steal and it does require as much set up as prioritizing Glyph of Pain.

Hey all, I'm writing this guide on Thoth, who I feel is severely underrated, or at the very least, severely underplayed. He can fulfill 2 roles on your team, Carry, and/or Mid. I feel that regardless of role/lane, his build is pretty much identical save some minor differences in laning items.
With Thoth in team fights, you generally want to try to position yourself in the back line of your team.
His skill order will generally be as follows:
Glyph of Pain -> Hieroglyphic Assault
However if it is safe enough, you may want to add extra damage and CC by using Evade and Punish to the above if singling an enemy out, or if chasing an easy kill.
Initiation:
While Thoth doesn't have much CC he can initiate with, what he can do, is set up his Glyph of Pain in preparation of a teammate initiating a fight, and then use his Final Judgement to start the fight off with a great HP lead. Using this proactively rather than to finish off some enemies usually gives them less chance to avoid it, since they aren't expecting it.
While Thoth has fairly good mobility in the form of his Evade and Punish. It has a fairly long cooldown, and should be used with care, and thought. Other than that, he has similar pros and cons you'd see in other carries.
Pros:
-Has amazing burst potential with Glyph of Pain + Hieroglyphic Assault.
-Excellent sustained damage.
-Excellent sustain when equipped with life/spell steal
-Has the ability to do relatively safe damage while team fights occur from a distance with Glyph of Pain
Cons:
-CC
-Once he loses his distance advantage, he becomes significantly easier prey.
-Susceptible to gods with high burst damage.

Whoever told you Thoth is an ADC Based Mage is very, very wrong. He is definitely an artillery, burst / ability focused mage. Plus numbers wise if you look at his 3 it doesen't make sense to build AA items on him. And in practice it's even worse. His 1 also doesen't proc AA item effects and is not really considered an auto attack, it just uses a similar firing mechanic to basic attacks / Sol's 2.
If you don't believe me, look at high level / competitive gameplay where Thoth is being played and you will see he is indeed not played as an AA character.
1) Read the guide

I think I do agree that the build/concept you've described is the more optimal build, however I've had decent results playing the one I've posted, and I have a lot of fun playing it that way. I can only really make a guide based on my personal experience, not of pro level players' experience.
I like how fast he can throw out his "1"s with the attack speed, and I think the gameplay styles end up relatively similar, this one just has more "uptime" due to its reliance on auto attacks, while the one you are describing does more damage while its up.
Thanks!
And I built quite similarly to this (though it was in S7). Lots of ADC / ring items. I hadn't playtested (I barely ever play him), and was hoping the 1 would increase in speed with added AS items. It obviously didn't. Oh well =(
No, in order to post your own guide here, don't look at high level gameplay. It is ok to copy them and include their builds into your personal gameplay if you like. It is not ok to copy that and paste it here into smitefire as your own. That is called plagiarism. There are some that do this in here, but it's shameful without giving credit to the people you took it from.
It os ok to get inspired, but copy-pasting can do everyone from the original source. No need to publish copy-pasted patterns here as your own.
Cool, I see you try a different approach for him, although I don't agree at all with it and wouldn't like to see in game.
Thanks for acknowledging the different approach! Even though you reject it with your entire being, haha.
Also there isn't really "build plagiarism" by copying pro's, especially when they use similar builds to each other at times. Only plagiarism that is problematic on this site is people copying guide writeups and then pretending it's their own, copying builds is fine.
Sometimes there is only so much variety and one can't blame them but other times it's just so obvious.
Copying items won't get your submission archived, but copying someone's explanations will.
Plagiarism here is in copying (word for word or paraphrasing) what someone else has written in their guide, or if we talk about pros, what they may have spoken in a video guide.
There is no issue here.
