For those interested, these are my recommended damage alternatives to Abyssal Stone.
Charon is a god that excels in hitting multiple targets and disrupting enemy tactics. His passive is a constant source of gold and can fill out his health pool, making him a durable unit as well as making him quick to build when focused in lane. As long as he is within range of friendly minions or jungle monsters, he will be able to gather stacks for his passive. Even when at 20 stacks on the passive meter, Charon players will still gain the bonus gold from his passive. This incentivises Charon players to stick close to lane minions while also assisting with jungle camps where possible.
Spectral Surge allows Charon to silence and slow enemies, allowing allies to catch up to targets or stopping enemies from using movement abilities if used wisely. The subsequent puddles created will also provide an environmental hazard for enemies, granting damage-dealers ample opportunity to secure kills.
Damnation can act as a good deterrent for aggressive enemies with it's attack speed reduction and ability of revealing enemy positions to nearby allies. It does take practice to get the timing right however, as the delay requires that you read enemy movements and lead your shots. Marked enemies do provide shielding to Charon and nearby allies, which makes this a decent pinch move where escape is a necessity.
Swift Voyage is a decently damaging escape that roots enemies struck without forcing Charon to stop moving. Being able to even loosely control your movement is a vital part of this skill as it can allow you to curtail enemy units and turn to escape simultaneously. This skill can see you rooting enemies for the team to pick off or stalling them to allow allies the chance to escape.
Summon Styx is s a global movement ability that, although slow, can catch enemies unawares in jungle fights if Charon is not close enough to directly engage. It can also intimidate enemies that are chasing down distant allies or preparing for an ambush. In team fights, Summon Styx can drag escaping enemies back into conflict with it's fear debuff while also lending a speed boost to your allies that chase after the wave to further secure kills.
Start with Sentinel's Gift for bonus gold and sustain while in group engagements. This will also provide initial protections against both physical and magical damage sources.
Next, pick up Glowing Emerald in order to start working towards Cannoneer's Cuirass. This easily overlooked item is useful for building up your Carry as well clearing enemy minions. Every 7s your next basic attack allows you to instantly dispatch a lane minion by generating a small explosion that damages nearby enemies. Each proc of this effect will also provide your nearest ally, ideally your Carry, with some additional gold.
I would recommend Cloak of Meditation as your first relic with Vision Shard (to watch over the duo lane defense camp) and either the Health or Mana Chalice. You can grab the other Chalice when available or opt for Chalice of The Oracle.
Next is Prophetic Cloak to substantially boost your protections and provide some cooldown as well as a bit more health.
Next, you may start building either Sovereignty or Amulet of The Stronghold depending on the enemies in your lane. You will end up building both regardless of order as these items will provide protections for nearby allies in team fights with the Glyph further bolstering your magical defenses based on your physical protections.
Around Level 15, you may trade Cannoneer's Cuirass for either Shogun's Kusari or Spectral Armor. Be sure to build the other later. Shugun's Kusari will make your basic attackers more devastating in team fights while Spectral Armor will help mitigate damage from enemy crits.
In the event that lifesteal gods such as Hades or Anubis are an issue, Spectral Armor may be replaced with Contagion.
When available, upgrade Sentinel's Gift to Sentinel's Embrace. This along with Sovereignty and Amulet of The Stronghold will allow you to provide additional protections to your allies.
