The Morrigan is a mage to be feared, possessing the ability to transform into any god on the battlefield, while also having very strong burst damage. This guide will cover The Morrigan in the mid and jungle positions while also giving some general advice.
If you aren't aware of this, the cooldown that The Morrigan's ultimate takes on will take into account not only her base cooldown but also the cooldown of the god's ultimate she transformed into. This feature will always prioritize the highest cooldown available. So for example if you have a max rank ultimate and you turn into Ra, your ultimate's cooldown will be 80 seconds instead of Ra's 50 seconds. And if The Morrigan's ultimate was 40 seconds and she transformed into Kali, who has a 90 second cooldown ultimate, her ultimate's cooldown would match Kali's instead.
What does this mean? It means that if you are only building cooldown reduction for her ultimate, you won't be as successful with it as you thought. Cooldown reduction is still a great stat but builds focused around ONLY that stat will falter.
Starting Build
Sands of Time is an excellent starter item for mages in general, granting generous mana sustain, and 10% CDR.
Soul Stone is another viable but more aggressive option, granting bonus magical power and restoring mana upon hitting 5 enemies with basic attacks. This starter item is more appealing on The Morrigan since her Doomsayer passive has an AOE hit, allowing her to stack up Soul Stone faster than most mages.
Bumba's Mask is built alongside a starter item in Mid due to the improved jungle camp clear it offers, and the bonus sustain. This item allow you to clear jungle camps by yourself, which will be often considering that your jungler will not be able to clear every jungle monster on the map.
Core Build
Shoes of Focus are picked up over Shoes of the Magi because early game as The Morrigan, you want to have your ultimate up as much as possible. The cooldown reduction also helps in having your standard abilities on a lower cooldown and the mana helps in relieving The Morrigan's mana consumption.
Spear of Desolation is a popular mage item, and on The Morrigan, she can utilize it well too. The generous amount of magical power, magical penetration, 10% cooldown reduction, and a passive that reduces your cooldowns by 1 second for each kill or assist obtained? Sounds too good to be true. At the earliest, you can have it built second item, after your shoes, and fourth item at the latest.
Obsidian Shard is the most efficient penetration item for magical burst gods. Negating 33% of an enemy's magical protections can really harm any squishy god that has gained protections from their team, and tankier targets, should you need to focus them or face them. 3rd item at the earliest, but no later than 5th item.
Rod of Tahuti is a must have for any damage oriented mage. It offers more in terms of power than any other item for mages. 4th item at the earliest and 6th item at the latest.
Polynomicon is a staple for any builds focused around damage because of how easily The Morrigan can proc the passive and use it as well. The stats it has are nice too but please avoid building this item early. There are much better items for your early in the game and Polynomicon will not yield as much effectiveness early in the game, as it would late in the game.
Pythagorean's Piece is a great utility item, but you'd mainly want it more for the fact that it grants a decent amount of magical power alongside 10% cooldown reduction, more than the aura passive. You can build it as early as 2nd item to as late as 6th item.
Bancroft's Talon is a very strong mage item currently, offering a high amount of magical power and decent health sustain for a cheap price.
Book of Thoth is an excellent mage item, able to permanently grant the user not only high mana but also high magical power. You can build this 2nd or even 1st in your build, but be aware that you will not have other stats for the time being such as magical penetration nor cooldown reduction.
Soul Reaver is an underrated mage item when it comes to inflicting high burst damage. often overshadowed by it's new rival, Ethereal Staff, never forget how much bonus burst damage that you can gain from Soul Reaver's passive. Typically you'll want this as a 5th to 6th item due to it's price.
Chronos Pendant is a great option for The Morrigan since it allows her to use her own abilites more often, which can be very great her Dark Omen and Confusion. You can build it as early as a 2nd or 3rd item to as late as a 6th item.
Magi's Blessing is a situational defensive item, only to be built versus gods with certain single target crowd control abilities such as Hercules with his Driving Strike, or even Ne Zha. Build preferably once you already have enough offensive stats to make up for the fact that you will not be building an offensive item for a while.
Spirit Robe is a situational defensive item, best built versus team comps that have a great deal of crowd control into high burst combos. Build similarly to Magi's Blessing.
Winged Blade is a situational defensive item, best against enemies with strong slows such as Nemesis. Build similarly to above defensive items.
Dynasty Plate Helm is a cheap item especially helpful against potent early game physical gods. Best time to build it is as a 1st or 2nd item, any later and it isn't quite as helpful.
Void Stone is an excellent bruiser mage item since it offers a generous amount of magical protections and a passive that reduces enemy magical protections, allowing her to deal more damage and any other magical gods on her team. Build as early as 2nd item and as late as 4th item.
Breastplate of Valor is preferably built for bruiser builds and solo lane builds, as the physical protection and early cooldown reduction will come in very handy. I'd avoid this item for damage oriented builds unless the enemy team has a strong physical damage presence.
ALWAYS be aware of what gods are available in your match. Not only will you want to know what every god does, and know the correct situation to use them in, but you will also want to know their leveling order. If you transform into Thanatos early on, you will end up having his Scent of Death ability maxed out instead of Death Scythe, his most damaging ability, because Changeling transforms your ability levels onto whichever god you transformed into's abilities.
While your Dark Omen->Deadly Aspects combo may have more damage, it is less reliable. By initiating with Dark Omen, especially out from stealth, you'll give your target a chance to escape. A more reliable combo is Deadly Aspects->Dark Omen. This combo will ensure that you can confirm all of your abilities.
Use the clone created by Confusion to block dangerous abilities such as Sobek's Charge Prey and Ullr's Thrown Axe.
Avoid travelling in obvious directions when in stealth.
