Introduction

Thor is one of the most unique Gods to play and one of my favorites. Keep in mind that this is my opinion and there are many builds/guides out there and they are all situation.
I have written this guide to cover the basic of how Thor is played as well as skill and build explanations and to give an insight into how I play Thor.
Should a significant change happen to SMITE I will edit this guide accordingly so it will always up to date.

If a big change comes up, revisit the guide to my opinion of how the updated Thor should be played and built

Like what I have written? Please give it a +1. If you have a problem or disagree with what i have written, then make a comment below and we can discuss it. Should i have overlooked anything, I can adjust the Guide accordingly.

NEW - THOR JUNGLE BUILD BELOW
The Guide has now been updated with signifcant visual improvements and tweaking to make it look nicer and easier to read.

Skill Information With Commentary

Warrior's Madness

Key Bind : Passive

Thor gains 15 Physical Power for each enemy god within 30 feet of him.

Ability : Buff
Affects : Self
Physical Power : 15
Max Stacks : 3
Max Physical Power Increase : 45

When fighting an enemy god, Thor will always have an increase of 15 Physical Power. This makes such a difference early to mid game. If an enemy god comes to help, he will harm his friend by increasing your Physical Power by another 15 points.

Mjolnir's Attunement

Key Bind: 1

Thor throws his hammer forward, doing Physical damage to all enemies in its path. If hit on the return as well, minions will take half damage while gods take Double Damage. While the hammer is flying, pressing the key bind will teleport Thor to his hammer.

Ability : Projectile
Affects : Enemy
Damage Type : Physical
Damage : 50 / 90 / 130 / 170 / 210 (+30% of your physical power)
Mana Cost : 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90
Cooldown Time : 14s

Thor's main escape ability. It can be used to get out of Odin's Ultimate and avoid the damage of The Kracken, if you are quick enough. It is also your main way of clearing creeps early game. Due to the double damage of the Back Swing, it can do serious damage early game so practice aiming it correctly. You will be shocked at the amount of damage it will do, especially to squishy mages.

Tectonic Rift

Key Bind : 2

Thor slams his hammer on the ground, causing a fissure to appear in front of him, stunning enemies and blocking movement.

Ability : Line
Affects : Enemy
Damage : None
Stun Time : .8 / 1 / 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 seconds
Fissure Lifetime : 4s
Mana Cost : 75
Cooldown : 17s

This ability is great for not only stunning and stopping enemies from escaping, by blocking their path, but by cutting off their pursuit will help your teammates escape. Use this carefully or you may trap allies and let enemies escape. Like Freya's Banish, this is an ability that will make your team love you or hate you. Practice this ability to get your aim and timing right.

REMEMBER - This can go through walls

Berserker Barrage

Key Bind : 3

Thor spins his hammer around him, doing Physical damage every .4 seconds. Thor is immune to knock up for the duration. Take that Hercules!

Ability : Area Of Effect
Affects : Enemy
Damage Type : Physical
Area Of Effect : 20m
Damage per Tick : 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 (+45% of your Physical Power)
Total Damage : 100 / 200 / 300 / 400 / 500 (+45% of your Physical Power)
Spin Duration : 2s
Mana Cost : 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 / 85
Cooldown : 13s

Thor's main source of damage. Thanks to Thor's passive it gains more power with the more enemies around him and provides good damage to all enemies in the area. Take care however, as a stun can disrupt the ability so pick the right time to use it.

Anvil of Dawn

Key Bind : 4

After a short buildup, Thor leaps into the air. While in the air, Thor can target a great distance away to come crashing down in the area, dealing significant damage and stunning all enemies in the radius.

Ability : Ground Target
Affects : Enemy
Damage Type : Physical
Landing Radius : 20m
Damage : 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 / 350 (+120% of your physical power)
Stun Duration : 1.5s
Mana Cost : 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 / 120
Cooldown : 90s

Thor's Ultimate Can Be An Escape Or An Initiation. I would recommend initiating after your main tanks has gone in to help clean up. My main tip with this is, TAKE YOUR TIME. You are in the air for 4 seconds which is plenty of time to think and aim properly. Make sure to go down in between multiple enemies in order to stun and make use of your passive which activates a split second before you land.

Having trouble landing your ult? Don't worry :) Even the Pros miss once in a while. Practice in the Practice Arena against the bot gods. Their erratic and yet predictable movements serves good practice.

Skill Sequence Explanation

Priority 1 : Mjolnir's Attunement

As you can see, I have chosen to level this ability first because of the large damage it can do early game, provided you can hit the Back Swing. After playing Thor for a while, I am confident enough to hit the Back Swing. Only late game does the damage from the back swing become less noticeable.

Priority 2 : Berserker Barrage

This is the ability that many people level first and I would agree it is a good idea to level first, should you be uncomfortable with Thor at the time of playing. Despite my Priority going to Mjolnir's Attunement over Berserker Barrage, as you can see, I still chose to level it occasionally at level 1,6 and 9. Do not underestimate the power of this ability and it is perfect for your early and mid game.

Priority 3 : Anvil Of Dawn

As you may have noticed, I gave Priority to Mjolnir's Attunement and Berserker Barrage over this ability because, early/mid game, you will use your 1 and 3 a lot more often than your ultimate. While it is a great initiater, you will get a lot more damage overall from your 1 and 3. As the game moves into mid and late game, it gains to top Priority but by then your Mjolnir's Attunment and Berserker Barrage have been finished.

Priority 4 : Tectonic Rift

DO NOT GIVE THIS ABILITY PRIORITY OVER ANY OTHER ABILITY.

Your Tectonic Rift serves as a stun/block and nothing more. While it is nice to have a longer stun, it is a lot less important than your other abilities doing more damage. Note that the Fissure Lifetime is always 4 seconds, regardless of level of the ability, and also the mana cost is increased so best to leave this till last.

Should you want a bit of a longer stun then maybe level it up one level in your early and mid but NO MORE. Should you level it any more, Thor will lose his momentum and your damage will significantly suffer.

Loadout Explanation

The loadout I have choosen is designed to combat Thor's Squishyness, while without the cost of decreased power. All of Thor's Tank items give him more Physical Power and allowing you to make better use of his passive by being alive for longer.

Please Keep In Mind That ALL Builds Are Situational And This Is Simply A Template That I Follow

1st Item Slot - Warrior Tabi

Total Gold Cost : 2150
Gold Cost Progression : 600 / 735 / 815

Physical Power Increase : 30
Attack Speed Increase : 9%

UNIQUE - +18% Movement Speed (Speed does not stack with other boots).
PASSIVE - You gain +15 Physical Penetration.

A great item for Thor and any physical god. Gives Physical Power, attack speed and passive Penetration. Do not use the Ninja Tabin unless you are a Thor uses his basic attack a lot more than his abilities. The Penetration is a lot better than a mere 9% crit chance with a basic attack.

2nd Item Slot - Ankh Of The Bear

Total Gold Cost : 2050
Gold Cost Progression : 670 / 380 / 1000

Physical Protection Increase : 40
Health Increase : 250
Attack Speed Increase : 15%

PASSIVE : 15% of your physical protection is converted to physical power.

A new item that I feel works perfectly for Thor. It is part of a combo with Voidblade and gives extra health, Physical protection, also Physical Power due to the added protection, and attack speed which is needed to help utilize the power of your basic attack.
This is great for early game to help you tank those Archers of Death and any physical god that you may be up against.

Should you be up against two mages for some reason, then go for Runic Shield ASAP instead of this item.

3rd / 5th Slot Option 1 - Voidblade/Focused Voidblade

Total Gold Cost : 2700
Gold Cost Progression : 890 / 720 / 1090

Physical Power Increase : 10 / 20 / 30
Physical Protection Increase : 10 / 30 / 50

Voidblade PASSIVE - Reduces the Physical Protection of enemies within 15 feet by 25.

Focused Voidblade PASSIVE - You gain +25 physical penetration.

This is a perfect item for Thor and any physical god. Physical Protection and power with passive penetration. I have chosen the Focused Voidblade over the normal Voidblade for the simple fact that it has 10 more points of penetration. HOWEVER, it completely depends on your team compilation. If you have 3 Magic and 2 Physical Gods, then choose the Focused Voidblade to more compliment yourself. Should you have 3 Physical Gods and 2 Magic Gods, then choose the Voidblade to better compliment the penetration of your team.

Choose Voidblade over Runic Shield for your 3rd item, if you are laneing against predominantly Physical Damage.
Keep in mind, Ankh Of The Bear gives you +40 Physical Protection

3rd / 5th Item Slot Option 2 - Runic Shield

Total Gold Cost : 2400
Gold Cost Progression : 1035 / 575 / 790

Magical Protection Increase : +60
Physical Power Increase : +20
HP5 Increase : +15

PASSIVE - When hit by an ability, your magical protection increases by 30 for 5 seconds. Can only occur once every 20 seconds.

A new item recently added that buffs Thor significantly. It works along the same lines as Bulwark Of Hope did that was a common item with Thor previous.
Bulwark Of Hope <--- Link
Runic Shield is better than Bulwark of Hope by not only give 30 more Magical Protection than Bulwark did, but also gives +20 Physical Power (every little helps) and 15 HP5. This is great when up against Magical gods as 90 Protection is a large amount while still giving Thor more power.

Choose Runic Shield over Voidblade for your 3rd item, if you are laneing against predominantly Magical Damage.

4th Item Slot - Jotunn's Wrath.

Total Gold Cost : 2440
Gold Cost Progression : 750 / 845 / 845

Physical Power Increase : 10 / 25 / 40
Mana Increase : 50 / 100 / 150
Physical Penetration Increase : 5 / 10 / 15

PASSIVE - Your ability cooldowns are reduced by 25%.

A great item for any Physical god. You gain penetration and 25% cooldown reduction as well as +40 Physical power and a bit of mana. Who dosent love a bit of cooldown? :) Keep in mind also that, if you choose Focused Voidblade, you are now at the Penetration Cap and no more penetration is required.

5th Item Slot - Eye Of Retaliation

Total Gold Cost : 2950
Gold Cost Progression : 950 / 800 / 1200

Physical Power Increase : 15 / 30 / 50
Physical Lifesteal Increase : 4 / 8 / 12 %

PASSIVE - You gain 1 additional physical power per 2% of your missing health.

It took me a while to work out Thor's final item but I have decided to remove Devourers's Gloves in favor of Eye Of Retaliation. At this point, all you require is more Physical Power and that's exactly what Eye Of Retaliation does. I chose this over deathbringer because, not only is it slightly cheaper, but also gives Thor 12% life steal, while giving him more Physical Power as his health decreases.
Another Protection item is also a viable 6th item.

Keep in mind, Physical Life Steal only effects basic attacks. It does not steal life with your abilities.

ALL ACTIVES ARE SITUATIONAL BUT HERE ARE THE TWO I USE MOST

Active 1 - Girdle Of Might

Total Gold Cost : 1100
Gold Cost Progression : 250 / 350 / 500

Using this item gives all allied gods in a 35 ft radius a +30 and 15% Physical Power buff and a +60 and 15% Magical Power buff for 10 seconds. Allies also gain +10% physical and magical penetration.

Cooldown - 90s.

No idea why this isnt in every guide on here. Use it before you go in and you will do significantly more damage. Your ultimate and girdle have mostly the same cooldown so use it before you ult to initiate.
Don't Buy Girlde Of Inner Might. Sure you gain more power but its always better to give you team more power.

Active 2 - Purification Beads

Total Gold Cost : 1100
Gold Cost Progression : 250/ 350 / 500

Using this item removes crowd control effects and makes you immune for 3s.
At Level 3 - This also reduces all god cooldowns by 5 seconds.

Cooldown - 240 / 180 / 90s.

Prefer Beads over Agis due to the fact Thor has two escapes which you can avoid damage with.

Jungle Thor Intro

It seems Hi Rez is now happy with the Jungle as it is right now and, over the last few days, I have been theory crafting and, with practice, finally mastered Thor in the Jungle.

Thor is my favorite God but after playing him in the Jungle, I never want to lane with him again.[/colour]

Thor is not for the lane, he is for the Jungle.

I now understand why he is one of the top jungle gods, and that's because he was built for it, unintentionally I assume.

So if you love Thor but feel like he dosen't quite fit in lane, then have a look at my guide, take from it what you will and get out into the jungle and play Thor in the role be was born to play.

Loadout Explanation

1st Item Slot - Warriors Tabi

Total Gold Cost : 2150
Gold Cost Progression : 600 / 735 / 815

Physical Power Increase : 30
Attack Speed Increase : 9%

UNIQUE - +18% Movement Speed (Speed does not stack with other boots).
PASSIVE - You gain +15 Physical Penetration.

A great item for Thor. Gives Physical Power, attack speed and passive Penetration. While it may seem like an idea to use Ninja Tabi as you will use your basic attack a lot in the jungle, the penetration is better for taking on tanks and other gods who will tank against you. Getting kills is very crucial for any Jungler and these boots help you get them, rather than Ninja Tabi.

2nd Item Slot - Heartseeker

Total Gold Cost : 1950
Gold Cost Progression : 700 / 530 / 720

Physical Power Increase : 5 / 15 / 25
Movement Speed Increase : 4 / 7 /10 %

PASSIVE - You gain +1 Physical Power per stack, and receive 1 stack per minion kill, and 2 stacks per god kill. Half of your stacks are lost on death (max. 50 stacks).

I was very cautious of this item earlier because Thor is squishy and loosing the stacks will set you back hard. But, with the new patch meaning that you only lose half your stacks when you die, I can see no reason not to get this item.
1. You are in the jungle and so getting plenty of minion kills.
2. Boosts your Physical Power significantly so you can gank easier.
3. Increases movement speed in order to catch fleeing enemies and farm quicker.
4. ITS CHEAP AS HELL!

3rd item Slot - Voidblade/Focused Voidblade

Total Gold Cost : 2700
Gold Cost Progression : 890 / 720 / 1090

Physical Power Increase : 10 / 20 / 30
Physical Protection Increase : 10 / 30 / 50

Voidblade PASSIVE - Reduces the Physical Protection of enemies within 15 feet by 25.

Focused Voidblade PASSIVE - You gain +25 physical penetration.

This is a perfect item for Thor and any physical god. Physical Protection and power with passive penetration. It helps you tank creeps which is beneficial for the jungle and for when you gank and the enemy minions auto-target you.
Whether you want to go for focused or not is up to you. If you have more Physical damage on your team than magical then go for the standard and help your team, but if you are having a hard time ganking, then focused is the way too go.

REMEMBER Thor is squishy - Your 4th item can be either Runic Shield or Jotunn's Wrath. If you are having a hard time against magic then get Runic Shield.

5th Item Slot - Runic Shield

6th ITEM.

I cannot choose which item to have last. It is completely situational and up to you to decide. If i had to choose, it would be Eye Of Retaliation from my lane build for the same reasons there. Got any Recommendations? let me know and see if we can get this final slot filled.

Jungle Route

DISCLAIMER - An Old Picture But You Know How It Is Now :)

1. Start - Your entire team deals with the two gold camps at mid. 2 on one side, 3 on the other, preferable with you in the 3. You will always start out on the right side.

Once finished, right team proceeds to red for you and left GOES TO LANE.

2. Red Buff - Proceed to Red Buff with your two comrades and let them help you get red. This is your first buff. The amount of damage this increases means you can clear out the jungle faster than with speed.

Mid should leave you at this point

3. Blue Buff - Proceed to Blue Buff and give it away to right lane.

4. Right-Southern Gold Camp - You are now on your own. Proceed down to your first gold camp and easily clear it.

5. Left-Southern Gold Camp - Walk there from right gold camp and complete this. Do not teleport in with your one as you cannot clear the gold camp as fast and you will take too much damage.

6. 2nd Blue Buff - SKIP SPEED and proceed to blue buff. Get left lane to help you and give it away to him.

7. Left Mid Gold Camp - SKIP SPEED again and get mid to help you here. If you get there and they have not respawned then wait a few seconds and they will appear.

8. A Choice to be made.

Option 1 - YOLO!!! and attempt to gank mid. At this point you will be low HP and Thor is squishy so keep this in mind.

Option 2 - Go Home and buy 2nd tier boots and a health and mana pot and proceed to do speed then gank either mid or left.

Option 3 - Semi-Yolo Go and do speed, by this point your red only has a few seconds left so you can replace it with speed. Same with option one, your health is low so keep this in mind.

Jungle Hints And Tips

Here are a few hints and tips I have which help me gank easier and keep my momentum going.

1. GANK MID.

Your main source of ganks early game is mid. I find it is easiest here unless you go up against chang'e who can be a ***** to gank. Go to other lanes should you have trouble here.

2. This Is A Team Game.

Dont be a kill *****. If you get a few kills, gank and give the kills to your team. Mid for example.
REMEMBER - They are setting up these kills for you. Without them, you are a dead jungler. Give back to your team with a kill for them :)

3. Initate a gank with your Tectonic Rift.

Use the wall to cut off their escape which keeps them close to your mid and closer to your damage :)

4. You Don't have to gank with your ult.

While it seems like a good idea, I did it myself in the beginning, it is not in practice. If you ult on them, yes you get a stun off but it is only a second and thats provided you hit it!. The second you get in that lane to gank, the enemy will retreat as fast as they can and your wall stopping them is not in place.

5. DO NOT FORGET THE JUNGLE.

In lane, we have a stream of minions coming to us and you take it for granted. When you are a Jungler, your jungle is your lane and if you forget about it, you will fall behind. Go in and attempt a gank, should it fail, go back into the jungle quickly and resume farming.

6. Thor Is Squishy!

I forget it myself but until you get that voidblade and shield, you are easy to focus down and kill. Don't be silly and give a kill to the enemy. Dont feel comfortable ganking? THEN DON'T!

I see what you mean but it would do him a dis-service. His damage potential is too high and there are much better tanks. Ymir and sobek for example. His CC is also very small. Thats why hes a bruiser.

Well as stated above, Devourer's Gloves need stacks to be useful, so getting them so late in the game is not recommended. You've stated multiple times how squishy Thor is and from the looks of your builds/comments, I would definitely go with Soul Eater. Every ally effecting aura also applies to the item wearer (you can confirm this yourself by noticing the buff icon above your health and reading your current stats in the shop menu). By your fifth item, the game would be in its mid to late stages and your moving more into teamfights and taking phoenixes. You wont have time to jungle or stack any items. Soul Eater will grant health and a flat 25% lifesteal as soon as you finish it, as well as the attack speed needed for towers.

As for your sixth item, I would recommend either Deathbringer or another defensive item such as Magi's Blessing. If you do end up far ahead by late game, a defensive item will insure you do still do high damage, but also means the enemy does less/gets less kills/ doesnt catch up. If your even by late game, go for the damage to end it as quickly as you can.

Lastly, I've noticed a typo under Mjolnir's Attunement's description. " it can do serious damage early game so aim is correctly." Nice guide over all.

I was wondering why you were talking about Devourer's Gloves but then I saw I had no deleted my old Thor Jungle Build. I have decided that, with new items over the last few patches, Devourer's Gloves and no longer an item I would use on Thor.

I like your idea of the Soul Eater. A few weeks ago I tested it and found that the aura is stacked on you. While I do like it, I feel that it would only be better than another defensive item if there were 3 Physical Basic Attack damage dealers on your team. Otherwise I would go with a situational defensive item.

It's passive does confuse me. This is because it says it gives the buff to "all allies within 30 feet" and i am not sure if it includes you.

Also i have changed Ankh of the bear to the second item because the tank plus attack speed is needed on Thor asap and the attack speed makes it better than voidblade as a second item
