Introduction

Hello everyone, I'm oranqe, and this is my Zeus guide.

This is my very first guide and I would appreciate any feedback so that I can improve this guide and all in the future for everyone. :)

Now, you might be wondering, 'Who is Zeus?'
Zeus is a ranged, magical mage, and he's absolutely awesome because of this:

"Cool guys don't look at explosions... cooler guys don't even look at the people they are murdering somebody."

You'll understand why in a little bit ;)

Pros and Cons

Pros
Cons
+ Ranged
+ Mid Lane Compatible
+ High Burst Damage
+ Stun with Detonate Charge
+ Good Team Fight Contribution with Lightning Storm
- Squishy
- Low Escape Potential
- Depends On Aiming

Skills

(Passive): Everytime Zeus hits an enemy with a basic attack, a charge is applied to them (Max 3 Charges per enemy). Basic attacks also deal 30% increased damage per charge.

Zeus fires a lightning bolt that hits and bounces between enemies, dealing damage and applying a charge on each hit.

aegis shield
Zeus harnesses his lightning defensively, granting himself additional protections, increasing his movement speed and making him immune to all slows. Basic attacks dealt to
Zeus while aegis shield is active will be reflected as magical damage and will apply a charge.

Zeus detonates all charges on enemies, dealing damage. Damage is multiplied by 1/2/3 depending on the number of charges. If Detonate Charge is used while an enemy has 3 charges, they will also be stunned for 1 second.

(Ultimate): Zeus conjures a storm, striking enemies in the area every second with lightning. Each time an enemy is struck, damage is dealt and a charge is applied to them.

Core Items

All mages need Shoes of Focus (or Boots). However, in this case, Chronos' Pendant is bought. Chronos' Pendant will max Zeus's cooldown reduction limit instantly and therefore instead of getting more cooldown reduction from Shoes of Focus, why not get penetration?

Like I just said, this item gives Zeus cooldown reduction but not only gives him some, but fills his limit. Finishing Chronos' Pendant will allow Zeus to spam abilities, Detonate Charge anytime you want and have a 50 second ult cooldown (okay fine, it's 54+ but 50 is more dramatic). The reason why I want to get it early is because of its crazy mana regeneration for early game management and of course, the cooldown reduction.

Rod of Tahuti is a great item for all mages. Even though it's pricey, it's worth it but remember, only buy it if you're farmed. Don't start the item if you're feeding and falling behind in gold. It's too expensive and I've seen people spending 30 minutes trying to finish it. That's why you should buy it middle or late game- never early.

Viable Actives

Aegis Amulet is a good active for every god to stop a burst of damage like Poseidon's Release The Kraken! or Fenrir's Brutalize or even to make yourself immune just for awhile so that your teammates can catch up, peel the enemies off and save you.

Since Zeus has no escape except for his aegis shield, it's always good to get a backup plan in case you can't outrun your enemy with speed. It is highly recommended that you get this active, preferably immediately after getting Chronos' Pendant.

sprint
Like before, this is a good backup plan in case you can't outrun your enemy. Though Combat Blink is way better than sprint for Zeus, it's fine to get a backup for your backup. This is optional, but you can never be too cautious.

Basic Attack Build

This is a build that is highly based on hitting and usage of basic attacks.
If this build is for you, you'll find that you use a lot more basic attacks to add charges than abilities.

While you are adding charges, the passive from this item will reduce their protections, making Detonate Charge hurt like a truck.

There are many ways to use this item effectively, so I'm just going to list some:
Use Chain Lightning to get a few charges on enemies and Polynomicon them.
Activate aegis shield and Polynomicon them. (Very risky. Not recommended.)
After stunning them with Detonate Charge (3 charges), Polynomicon them.
Gives you some magical protection and a lot of penetration. What for? To murder, of course.

Skill Attack Build

This is a build that is highly based on hitting and usage of abilities.
If this build is for you, you'll find that you use a lot more abilities to add charges than basic attacks.

This gives you life steal for sustaining in lane and it will make you really, really scary when you're jumped on and about to die. Oh Hun Batz is jumping on me? Calmly add 3 sweet charges to him while he's bashing the heck out of you and then STRIKE- he's dead.

Really good for securing kills and overall making you a good teammate. Even if you're feeding and horrible, if you can keep constantly landing those skills and applying the slow, you're good to go.

Get those 3 charges by using abilities will lower their defenses before you murder them with Detonate Charge. You can get them anytime you want, it's a really cheap item.

Compatible Teammates

With Shackles, Ares can slow enemies for you to easily land charges on them. With No Escape, you can place a Lightning Storm where Ares lands. Oh, the destruction... This is more viable in Arena as people will less likely buy beads to counter No Escape.
With Ragnarok, enemies will be brought to you like your favorite meal. Place a Lightning Storm over the enemies, and they will be fuc doomed.
Ring of Spears... Oh god the good ole' days. Like the above, just ult the victims trapped in the Ring of Spears and they're done for. Warning: You only have a short amount of time to place Lightning Storm perfectly in the Ring of Spears. Missing by too much will allow enemies to stay in areas of the ring without suffering your might.
Sobek isn't that good of a partner than the others above, but he's more reliable for his Charge Prey as the others above can easily be countered. Be careful though, if Sobek flings an enemy way more powerful than you are, you might get killed.

With any bit of sense you can see that good partners of Zeus have skills that help ensure you apply your charges. Without charges, Zeus is practically useless.

Formidable Enemies

If you get caught in Mummify, you're basically dead unless you have Purification Beads. Good luck!
Any SMITE players will be scared of that Vanish and aimed strike. I mean those are scary sounds. Any competent SMITE players though, will be scared of Assassinate. Zeus is a bit tankier than most mages, but a Loki can kill you in about 2 seconds if you're not careful.
Whirlpool is a really strong ability because of its slow. Don't get caught in it during a fight, it'll be the end of you. Release The Kraken! will not kill you in one blow, but it'll get you really low and put you in no condition to fight.
Detonate Charge on Vamana when his Colossal Fury is active? Bad idea. It will do little damage to him and will not stun him. Do not waste Detonate Charge unless you are confident you can kill him with it, with his extra protections. Your Detonate Charge mustn't be wasted.

Teamfights

Like I just said, do not waste your Detonate Charge. If you don't Detonate Charge as Zeus, you're not helping your team at all.

If you play Zeus a fair amount, you'll find those really annoying moments when the entire team has about 3 charges on them and with a tap of Detonate Charge, everyone is dead. Except it's on a 2 seconds cooldown. Except you're dead.

Playing Zeus efficiently is also having to know how to use Chain Lightning. It can be used for 2 purposes: clearing waves and applying charges to enemies.

Clearing waves is pretty self explanatory, if you're taking in any information at all from this guide.
Applying Charges with Chain Lightning is an advanced trick of Zeus players where by they shoot a Chain Lightning on enemies without minions. This bounces between them 4 times (excluding the initial shot).
If there are 2 enemies, one should have 3 charges while the other 2.

Using Lightning Storm during a team fight is really tricky. It's like Ao Kuang's spirit's tempest. Wait till enemies are clustered together and focusing a teammate of yours. Or even if the enemy Odin traps your teammates in his ult.

You never really want to be up in front in a team fight. Just bob and weave, like all mages. Cast a spell, run. If you get caught out you'll die.

Ranked Play

This video regards competitive play of Zeus and in it you'll hear some of the tips and tricks you find here. (P.S. Hope you don't mind me putting your video here, Dry!)

Summary

Overall, I think Zeus is a really interesting god with his concept of charges.
Mastering Zeus will take practice, practice and more practice.
The only advice I can give you to speed up your mastery is to think.
Think of new creative ways to use items and abilities but most importantly- have fun!

Rate this guide as you see fit.
I spent about 3 days on this. Though really, it was only about 6 hours total XD
I want to thank jhoijhoi for making such an absolutely awesome guide for... guides! It was a fantastic resource and format I can base on.
I never knew writing guides would be so... code-ish. But I like codes, so I might make more guides. We'll see :)

Now that you've finished reading my guide, I hope you put it to good use.

Focused Void Stone is a removed item. You can still have similar results with Void Stone, though.

How I Zeus: Get 2 charges on oponent, basic attack or chain lightning, then ULT on top of them(seriously you won't miss this ULT) Stun them in the ULT. Watch mass ownage on your enemy. Repeat after 54 secs. (Or if people are stupid and/or confident enough to basic attack duel you, they will also instantly die).
