Personally, I think that each god should actually: A) Sound like the area they're from. Norse gods should sound Scandinavian, Egyptian gods should sound (Egyptian? Middle-Eastern? I don't know if there's a real accent difference, I've never been there), etc. And I'd rather they not sound super stereotypical either (*cough*ZhongKui*cough*) but beggars can't be choosers. B) Maybe look like how they should or have fitting abilities. Like ***bakharna. They just grabbed the word "sleep" and rolled with it (He looks fine, but he doesn't need to be groggy and sleepy and whatnot. It's just silly). Or how Ares is a magic power tank (like, seriously? This keeps me up at night. How is the God of WAR not a warrior?). I'm ok with some stylization in this aspect (Agni, for instance. He's not normally made of cinders, but it works for him). Anybody else think these, or am I entirely alone?

I think HiRez has done a fine job in terms of the looks and sounds of the gods and goddesses. Sure, not all of them are necessarily authentic, but I think they put a fun little spin on the looks and voices they give each of their creations that deviate a bit from the original source material. You also have to remember that there are many interpretations to some of the looks and details of all the gods and goddesses throughout history. One painting of a certain god or goddess will differ from a different one.

As for Ares, yeah, he would probably fit better as a warrior, but at the same time, it's not like gods/goddesses of war should solely be type casted as just warriors. I mean, look at Anhur or Athena. Anhur was a god of war, but he fits perfectly as an ADC, and Athena, who was partially also a goddess of war/warfare, and even her abilities in-game reflect this, fits perfectly as a tank. Gods/Goddesses of war don't always have to equal warriors.

Also it's not entirely easy to cast people solely based on their regions if the voice given to them is still decent and fits the character otherwise. And it's not stereotypical, it might just be....accurate.

(Also Khumbakharna absolutely needs to be groggy based on his actual lore)

And the God of war is a warrior, just not a bruiser warrior that we commonly know. I don't know about you, but someone who rushes into combat, chains people to himself, blasts them with fire, and inspires troops to charge into combat...that's pretty war like. It's also what actual ares was like - Sword and Shield. We also have several Gods of War that ARE warriors, like Guan Yu and Odin. We need variation too, you know.

Ares may have a kit befitting a warrior (he should probably have a debuff instead of a buff, but that's just my two cents), but like someone on these forums so eloquently put it "his sword hits like a wet noodle". Like you said, gods of war don't need to be warriors but I think Ares is one who definitely should. Though I also think there are a few gods who were put into the wrong roles (Hades for example. From my understanding of Greek mythology his helmet granted him invisibility, a trait more befitting an assassin or ambush mage [the role I obviously think he should have been]). And yes, it makes sense for ***bha to be groggy but I think they took it too far and relied on it too heavily in his design.

I think Hi-Rez did quite a good job in God Designing mostly. And they are trying to get a certain keyfeature (like Apollos music). If you would consider every fact in the lore, the god needs to have 10 abilities ;)

Well I still think Ares should be a warrior. Raven is totally right, his kit DOES fit a god of war.
BUT he hits like a noodle with his sword. And I'm sure a phys based damage on him, with the same kit would work! The chains will need to be adjusted and his buff maybe. He is known for his brutal behaviour, the buff is just not 100% fitting imo.

Give him phys scaling with a slightly different kit and he will be the perfect warrior (imo!)

There are just other gods of war that fit better in another role than a warrior. I still think Guan Yu tank was awesome :D
And Athena is definetly in a perfect spot.

Sorry for my english, kind of tired atm

While I generally think that HiRez did pretty good job with god designs and that the abilities do reflect their role more or less, there is one thing that really bugs me: Athena and her voice pack... She sunds like a freaking Russian goddess! Ok, it sound awesome with Red Star, but come on, for normal one?

As for the fancy skins: I do not mind, and actually consider it a good way of showing that this is a freaking game and the setting is just an excuse for the gameplay to be enjoyable.

Can't make Ares a physical without breaking things, hence why warriors got heavily hurt. Basically, a physical tank is very troublesome for balancing issues with how much physical power applies to in-hand attacks (100% contribution compared to a fraction of that)

Much easier to balance him magical. And it makes sense, while half of his kit can be argued for physical, his flames definitely aren't. Plus, his passive works really well with magical items.

Eh, I think he's fine. I understand the argument but I don't see a need to change it.

In the end, if you make the requirements too strict this game is going to fail. While DotA, HoN, and LoL are all very flexible (they get to literally create anything they want), Smite is very constrained in its relation to lore and non-offensiveness. If you start forcing them to be too close to lore, it's REALLY going to hurt creativity and the ability to be flexible. There should be room for change and we can't look at everything too narrowly.

Good point Raven!

Maybe Hi-Rez can implement a new class: Magical bruiser :D But I guess it's just damage-tanks^^

I can imagine Ares burning every enemy with unbreakable chains on every faces when he is classified as a warrior. I agree with that.

But i think he's fine with his class right except for being a magical bruiser in my opinion.

Should we rename Nemesis to the Goddess of Thievery?
"Goddess of revenge" , yes I can clearly see that in her abilities.
why does wukong look so much different now?
