Thought I'd make a debate on it.

For me it's Athena. Her ulti is real viable when it comes to ganking. It does need coordination between Athena and her Ulti target. But if successful it can turn a losing battle to a win. Or a ensure a kill that your teammate cant without your help. Her passive is also viable when it comes to being a tank. Able to block 3 basic attacks. Good for body blocking with no risk of your losing health. And if you have low health but still have the 3 stacks you can easily body block along with your taunt in a tight situation if you see a teammate in trouble.

Depends on comp. Athena is good for splitpushing, and for a more all-in oriented comp. Her charge-shield wall-taunt combo is good initiation, but requires instant follow up. As such, she is very good in comps where the mages are more or less only good for their ults.

Ymir is more of an AoE centric god, whose frost breath is much wider than Athena's taunt, and on a much shorter cooldown. Additionally, he provides a sort of additionally CC with his displacement with walls. It makes sure people can't escape from a position. He works better with either sustained compositions, or AoE compositions. He works better with Odin or Hades solo lane, or Ne Zha for the wombo combo. He's also a very strong peeler with his large hitbox, as he can bodyblock for his adc very well.

In the end, they're THEE two tanks to have in the game right now, with Bacchus sharing some of the glory. In the end, it's what you need in your comp - An initiator, a peeler, etc.

Eh, don't fight between Athena and Ymir. Currently, top tanks are Athena, Sobek Bacchus. Somehow, most people think Ymir is in lower tier than they are (though i think he is good)

Wow I can't believe I forgot Sobek...
But everyone basically has their two specialties.
Sobek: Initiation and Disruption
Athena: Initiation and Light CC
Ymir: Disruption and Hard/Positional CC
Bacchus: Disruption and Positional/Disorienting CC

etc etc

I agree.

I think it really depends - Athena has her ult and her Confound, but that's about it - her initiation is OK, and her 3 is really kinda useless if you actually build her tank. Ymir, on the other hand, is built beautifully so that his whole kit is always useful, recently amplified by his ability to not need LoS. His 1 can meld the battlefield to what his team needs, his 2 can give decent AoE slow and good poke damage for a tank, and his 3 is a brilliant AoE stun that can really turn the tide of any skirmish/teamfight. However, he lacks an initiation, and apparently the having to waste an active slot and spending 300/600/900 on a Blink is enough to put him to low tier, despite his (I think) superior kit.

So my answer is, Ymir is better than Athena.

Maybe it`s just that I don`t like Athena although I`m a tank player, but for me it`s Ymir. The stun, wall, Slow and Ult is my avourite Kit (together with Sobeks). I just can get onto Athena and always sucked when playing her... Also I have the feeling that Athena just can`t take as much as Ymir can (maybe just me). Athena has much more mobility and a unique CC. But I`d go Ymir all the way

If used well Athena her taunt can be incredibly useful. Both their ult's need good communication to hit but overall I like Athena's mobility and map control more than Ymir's hard CC.

That was my opinion about Athena vs Ymir but They are all infinitely inferior to one and one tank only:

When You want to be a good tank with Ymir You need to build Blink. His mobility is bad and IMO mobility is very important for tanks. Athena wins without doubts.
