I love ymir over athena, though with athena the actives are easy (hog and eye). But with Ymir, I am always torn. You gotta go blink (and while combat blink is nice its not always necessary) but then you have to choose between hog and eye. I am not sure which to choose :-/

If the pro scene is anything to go by, Athena is the superior choice. In tournies the picks are pretty much between her, Sobek and Bacchus if one of the former two is unavailable/banned. Ymir sees very little play, although he did get picked up a little last week, so we'll see how things will progress now that Ymir has had a few buffs.

Based solely on my own experience though, I have to hand it to Athena. Her Taunt is an even more powerful form of CC than Ymir's stun, as she can pull distant enemies into an attack. Ever pulled two enemies at the very edge of your cone back into a furious ult combo from your team? It's brutal. The downside, of course, is the Taunt's shorter duration, but it works well. Other than that, she has superior initiation with her dash, and a quick + + combo can deal good damage and CC multiple opponents. Ymir really needs Blink or a very well placed to initiate on people.

Athena also packs much greater overall mobility. let's her relocate to a teamfight from any position on the map and potentially deal a ton of damage in the process. The damage threat and damage mitigation for the targeted ally also lets her deter attackers and save teammates even when she isn't even close to the teamfights when they break out. Ymir has good peel and zoning, but he doesn't have a global presence and instant butt-saving skills quite of that caliber. Ymir's wall also has the problem of lasting a long time with no option to cancel it, which means a bad wall can potentially screw your team over. It can even help an enemy escape if they have the ability to jump over it and your teammates don't.

That said, Ymir has more CC than Athena and is, if I remember correctly, the most naturally tanky god in the entire game save for those special cases with passive bonuses. (, , and a few others). He is definitely not a bad pick, but my money's on Athena.

Yes Ymir was picked last week but You forgot that he wasnt built tank. Main tank in that team with Ymir was Ares - another low tier pick. Main strategy was to force enemies to always waste their ults/beads to escape from Ares ulti which leaved them without ult and vulnerable for Ymir's CC.

Athena for me I played a lot of games with her and only died once.
Yamir on other hand is better support.
