Are you deciding on the name for a baby? If so, I recommend ???

I don't particularly like the use of "Copying versus Following" in your title, as it seems a bit loaded. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a comparison thread at its core.

Anyways, I wholeheartedly agree with you on the difference between copying and following, but you seem to be arguing about incompetence rather than imitation. I'll admit I think HiRez puts too much focus on lore and too little focus on gameplay in their reveals, but I don't think it's really necessary to basically give a comprehensive guide to every god. They should obviously know quite a bit about how the god plays or otherwise it couldn't possibly be balanced properly and they should show the god in action (it is a reveal, after all). But I think we, the players, should learn how to play the gods ourselves. Not individually, but as a community. I think it's interesting how people use gods differently over time as their true advantages come to light, and, to me, that's part of the fun in a game - learning and improving.

I'm also asking anyone who comments on this thread to refrain from throwing **** at each other as many of the members here have been lately. Instead of calling any game "terrible," please discuss what you'd like to see from other games implemented in Smite, and vice-versa.

Perhaps they do focus a little too much on the lore, and too little on the actual god. But I would in no way support them taking time OUT of lore and putting that time toward gameplay, and here's why: (THIS IS VERY ****ING IMPORTANT BY THE WAY BUT I'M TOO LAZY TO BOLD IT SO PAY ATTENTION)

Part of the reason why I like Smite in comparison to other mobas is the fact that Smite uses actual mythological figures. And while some players, especially competitive ones, may say "Ah, nobody cares about the lore. Just get me into the action.", I know personally I enjoy the lore, and I'd go so far as to say, I usually pick characters to play often with their lore in mind. For example, I find Vamana's story fascinating.

As for Sub's whole deal with the "below the standard" thing... meh, I can't really argue there, besides the fact that perhaps Hi-Rez wants to give you only the bare minimum and let you figure out the rest for yourself. However, I will say one thing, however, which is also important:

I feel Hi-Rez sometimes DOESN'T WANT to follow in LoL's footsteps intentionally because it wants to be different. Hi-Rez really wants to create a moba that stands out from the rest.

Now, before I get everyone jumping in saying "BUT HI-REZ COPIES ABILITIES AND STUFF FROM LEAGUE ALL THE TIME", let me just say this.

Do you know how many mobas are on the market? Let's just stick with the main 3 for now: LoL, DOTA, and Smite.

LoL has 121 champs, with 4 abilities and 1 passive each.

DOTA has 110 heroes (I think) with 4 abilities each.

Smite has 60 gods with 4 abilities and 1 passive each.

That means, total, LoL has 605 abilities, DOTA has 440 abilities each, and Smite has 300 abilities each, for a total of 1345 abilities.

I don't care what the company is, you're gonna accidentally (or maybe intentionally) copy off of one of the ONE ****ING THOUSAND abilities in one of the other two mobas, and I think people need to realize this. When you put it into perspective, it can be tough thinking of COMPLETELY ORIGINAL abilities, oh and by the way, even if you think it's completely original, there's a small chance you copied off of one of the other mobas by accident.

So I think the whole "Smite copying League" argument seriously needs to be dropped.
Thanks to Ferrum for making the sig pic! He's beast af people.

the problem with their lore is that they dont have any self created lore (or very very little) i think that if they simply waste half of their reveal on a wikipedia article that they should drop it.

if they how ever focus 1/4 of the god reveal on the lore that they created on WHY the characters are fighting in the first place i would be perfectly ok with lore being in the video.

litterly anyone can go google vamana's story. if hirez actually takes some time to create lore for their own game and the characters in it then me and a lot of other people will be happy because i might actually end up giving a slight **** about a character.

thinking of completely new idea's is pretty god damm important when creating a game, if hirez can't do it in the time they have then they can give them selves more time on creating gods by slowing down their development.

a company also doesn't need to come with a new idea every second, if they expand on existing properties by keeping the base idea in line but changing it enough to fit in their game then that is effectively what we are saying.

if they can't come with originality at the rate they put up for them selves then they can either give them selves more time or think of how to change them.

i actually just came up with a way to fix new wa's ult by keeping the base idea but changing it so it fits in the game. base idea, a kill finisher usable from any point in the map against anyone, no vision required.

well that is easy to fix by instead of making it a press button receive kills ability by doing it like this.

new wa focuses all the fire in the world to create a giant fire ball above the battle field, granting true vision of all enemies because of its brightness, after a short delay new wa flies into the sky and is can choose to send the ball in it's entirety flying into one spot dealing magic damage or to split the ball in 5 smaller ones and getting the chance to shoot 1 up to 5 enemies with it by playing a minigame similar to ne zha's. (one ball does more damage meaning it is good as a single target ability while the 5 balls can kill more then one person but don't do as much damage)

the single ball is chosen in a similar fasion to nemesis ult but global meaning there is still some aiming to do.

both forms are usefull and ingaging while holding the same purpose.

there i came up with a what i think is a pretty creative new idea while also using something existing but changing it so that it fits into the game... i think i just did both the things.

that is just A way to fix it and im not saying that is the best way to do it.

hirez doens't need to copy anything but they do either intentional or not. if they gave them selves more time then i think they can be very creative.

also no there it isn't that small of a chance its done unintentional considering almost all of the higher ups at hirez PLAY LEAGUE AS WELL and probebly a large part of the normal staff as well.

its the most popular moba around and hirez is defently seeing it as an example looking at the way they changed the meta by merit of bumba's.

they defently wanted a jungle when smite already had its own meta that allowed for a lot of freedom, heck EREZ litterly defended jungling to death and promoted it incredibly hard with any chance he got even by wearing a shirt focused on leagues meta that promoted jungling. (it had the word marksman on it...) and this was before the map change.

yeah no there is no small chance hirez did it unintentional...

Well sometimes even finding lore online and through books is a lot harder than coming up with an idea. There's many creative people that work for riot. However not for all gods but for a lot, Hi-Rez has to find a bunch if mythological stories and attributes to that god since religion is scattered around. Even sometimes, there's barely any information on some gods, it takes time to research about them and not only that, Hi-Rez has to design their gods based on lore.

No, the lore is important and I'll always love it.
