I would love my SMF name to match my in-game name, to avoid confusion, but I haven't found a setting yet... does anyone know how to do this?

It costs gems though. Click on the buy gems thingy, and there is an option for it.

It definitely is possible, some people have done it before, but I'm really not sure how they did it. Like Pandr said, try contacting Mowen.

SmiteFire & Smite

Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join session-based arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. Smite is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DotA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat.
