It's actually extremely useful and popular in Joust 1v1, it seems.

Shield + Achilles Spear on Hunters against people with no escapes and no CC is insane in 1v1, combo it with Fatalis and its on the verge of being the next Chronos.

The thing is you generally need beads or sprint as a must and shield is better than achilles since it counters it. So shield and sprint/beads is your best bet.

I can see it being really strong on physical gods in 1v1. But it was **** in conquest (tried it 5 times, so I know what I'm talking about... or not).

I was playing a siege game yesterday and couldn't figure out why the enemy Mercury kept owning my face every time we boxed. I was playing Freya and would just die with him taking almost no damage, which was odd. Then I realized he was using the Shield. Yup.

People need to use this more on Odin. His Ring of Spears is SO much better when this is utilized with it.

SmiteFire & Smite

Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join session-based arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. Smite is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DotA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat.
