Seriously, I hate this guy. Anything wrong with smite can be summed up in one word, that word being Thanatos. So what's my reasoning?

1: His damage, specifically from his 1. His death scythe lives up to its name, doing 380 damage as a relatively easy to hit nuke, that also slows them. But this skill takes it one step further by adding an extra bonus damage based on the gods' health. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH DAMAGE AND KILL POTENTIAL THAT IS??? That's enough to deal around 450 damage at level 9! But then again, other gods can do more, so it may be ok... except this skill has a short CD and thanatos can compliment it with his soul reap for over 600 damage that early in the game, as well as basic attacks. But, I suppose there are a lot of gods with heavy damage and little utility, so maybe it isn't so bad. HUEHUEHUE, YOU THOUGHT WRONG.

2: His utility, from his 1, 2, 3 and 4. His death scythe has a good slow and a heal, his scent of death has a lot of speed and pen, and his 3 has a great area silence. But his 4.... holy ****. He can not only cross an enemy off the map, but he can escape especially easily thanks to its flight ability. So effectively he is rather hard to kill and impossible to shut down early if he has half a brain.

3: His heals, from his passive and 1, are stupid. They essentially mean mana is never an issue with this god, and he can heal far too much. With a bloodforge, devo gloves, asi, or all 3, this guy is stupidly hard to kill, whilst dealing a lot of damage and controlling his enemies.

But, despite all this, there is one thing I hate more than anything. All these things are relative to about lvl 1-15. What I hate most about thanatos is his lategame. Why? IT'S RATHER BAD. Like, he goes from the absolute ****, to absolute **** itself. This guy isn't op. He isn't up. He;s broken, and he transitions in such a way that he is impossible to balance. HiRez, if they want to do anything, have to buff his lategame whilst nerfing his early game; a simultaneous equation that isn't easy to get right.

A good thanatos can absolutely destroy the enemy jungler, making it impossible to recover and pretty much guaranteeing a win, with the exception of other early game junglers.

I agree with the OP, he needs to be more balanced out, to be less insane early game and a bit stronger late game.

Some of my dota friends complain because they say he is too hard since his abilities drain hp... But out of experfience from moba's with this kind of kit the easiest counter is poison/DoT damage and to just go and kill him...

He's fine by his abilities. Just the fact about the mana is right. Obviously.
He can spam as much as he wants even around level 1-10. There's absolutely no need to back to base for thanatos due mana shortage.

He is good, but if a team knows what to do he can't destroy the enemy jungle. Ofc if it is a game where ppl just play their own game and do not care about how the team is doing he is going to wreck face :P
