Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else but would I be right in saying that the damage type in the god description only relates to their special damage? So for example Ymir's melee attacks need Physical Power where as his specials require Magical? Or is it all magical?

All, and I mean ALL basic attacks are physical and scale with physical power. The abilities, however, scale on either magical or physical and scale with whatever damage you built. That's what causes the difference between AD's and AP's. AD's (Attack Damage) focus on physical basic attacks mostly, but also use physical abilities. AP's (Ability Power) focus on heavy damage abilities that for the most part run on magical power. However, some AP mages can be built AD, such as Ymir.

That's because of her passive. By basic, I mean the absolute basic damage from auto-attacks.

Hell yeah, I love AD Poseidon. It's better to build him hybrid with some speed in my opinion, but I've seen a Trident-oriented Poseidon wreck ****.

I have seen a troll movement speed poseidon with attack power and man he moved fast and hit hard. Including sprint... wow.

There are some troll builds, but its not as viable

Um...would it be better to go another god than ymir for ad. Its a waste unless you got sobek or bacchus, the other two tanks that can not go anything but tank imo.

SmiteFire & Smite

Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods.
