10.27.2015 Update

Hi everyone. I have shifted the majority of my game play over to Assault, so I wanted to provide an updated build that fits a little better.

As you know, you will not be able to purchase any stackable item in Assault, so that means warlock's sash is out. You are still critically dependent on CDR, however. That being the case, and the fact that you're somewhat of a mana hog early game, you will want to purchase Chronos' Pendant first. Additionally, purchase a Meditation and if you'd like, either first tier boots or load up on some potions.

From here, go straight into your Shoes of Focus. The recent buff gives you an additional 250 mana which is quite nice, and this will max your CDR as soon as possible.

Now it gets a bit tricky here. Most often you're going to want Gem of Isolation next. The main reason is so you gain that slow which will really benefit your team. However, if you're facing a very tanky group, you can go ahead and purchase some penetration now. Depending on how tanky the opposing team is, you can either go with Spear of the Magus or Obsidian Shard.

Next is the essential Rod of Tahuti. This is a must for most, but not all, mages.

The last item I included is completely situational. In this build I put Divine Ruin. This gives you a little magical power and lifesteal, but more importantly counters healing if the other team has a healer such as Aphrodite, Chang'e, Guan Yu, etc. If you want more lifesteal and magical power, you can opt for Bancroft's Talon. This build is not tailored for Pythagorem's Piece as this will cause you to over invest in CDR which is a waste. If you have a team comprised of mainly magical gods and would like to go this route, that is fine but I suggest swapping Shoes of Focus for Shoes of the Magi.

I know I kept this fairly short and sweet, but I hope it helps. Feel free to comment with questions or suggestions.

I will leave you with this; if you're lucky enough to roll Ah Puch on your team in Assault, do NOT reroll him. He is a complete boss in assault due to his burst damage potential and lane control.

Introduction

Hi there! If you're reading this, odds are you're wanting to try out or perhaps improve your skills with Ah Puch. I currently have a mastery level 10 Ah Puch and have logged a significant number of games with him, most of which were jousts. In this guide I will include my joust build but more importantly, tips on how to demolish using Ah Puch. This is my very first guide so any feedback will be much appreciated.

Pros / Cons

Pros

  • Unbelievable burst damage
  • Excels from afar
  • Able to heal
  • Ultimate is fantastic for offense or defense

Cons
  • Somewhat of a mana hog, especially early game (can be mitigated by purchasing Meditation and securing the mana buff)
  • Lacks escape
  • Very poor close range/one-on-one god

Items

warlock's sash
Begin with your sash so that you're able to start acquiring stacks as soon as possible. You will spend 1450 gold on your second level sash. I purchase this and a Mana Potion to get me started.

Shoes of Focus
I purchase my boots after my sash. There really isn't too much chasing around in early game so not having boots on upon spawn isn't a huge hindrance.

Chronos' Pendant
An absolute necessity for Ah Puch. This will be your third item because, once completed, you will max your CDR at 40%. Max CDR is critical with Ah Puch so that he can be a damage powerhouse. This also makes it so you're able to heal with Undead Surge with nearly no cooldown.

Gem of Isolation
Now you're well on your way to 100 stacks with your Warlock's Sash and you've got your CDR maxed out. It's time to increase power, your mana pool, and add in some additional slow effects.

Rod of Tahuti
This is a staple item for most mages. Your core is basically complete and now you're just beefing up your MP.

Spear of the Magus
The final piece to this build is Spear of the Magus. If you're wanting a situational item, this can be that piece. If you find the opponent(s) are armor heavy, substitute an Obsidian Shard for some even greater penetration. If they have a healer and that's causing issues, try a Divine Ruin.

The Ultimate Damage Combo

Undead Surge>>> Fleeting Breath>>> Corpse Explosion
This will take some time to master, but this is how I'm able to get the most burst damage out of Ah Puch.

Begin with your 1st ability, Undead Surge, then immediately cast your 3rd ability, Fleeting Breath, and finally, cast your 2nd ability, Corpse Explosion. If you time this right, the enemy will not have time to retreat and you will deal unbelievable damage. This combo will get even better once you've purchased Gem of Isolation as it will slow them and give your teammates time to dish out more damage.

Know who you're fighting, understand their abilities and how far your corpses will travel. This will help you setup and land the perfect attack. Be patient. If you're fairly certain the enemy is out of range, do not waste mana and cooldown tossing your corpses out. They will simply kill your corpses and you'll be out mana, on cooldown and the enemy will have plenty of time to advance. Time your attacks just right and be sure to keep your distance. You do not want to be caught in a face to face fight while using Ah Puch because, odds are, you will lose.

Summary

Ah Puch is a mage and mages are meant to be played from a distance. That being said, Ah Puch can be played from an even greater distance than most. There is no reason for you to be within striking distance of your opponent...ever. Stay behind your tank (or the tankiest teammate) and only advance when you're ready to combo. Once you've combo'd, retreat back to your original position. Once you get comfortable with his range, you can start purchasing Blink and really begin to have fun. I do this often and have had great success rates because, quite frankly, nobody expects a mage-Blink-ultimate combo. Just be sure to let your team know you're planning to engage so you receive backup and there are others to absorb the possible damage.

I hope you've enjoyed my first guide. Do not hesitate to provide feedback, either regarding the contents of the guide or the formatting.

Great guide. I personally do only arenas and I swap the sash (with toth) to counter the mana problems, as with or without it being caught alone is most certainly a -1.

For a while I was looking for a decent itemization that may vary, but this is pretty much what I always build unless heavily focused. In fact I went from 1-10 with those items, and though last hitting gods isn't Ah Puch main strength getting them to 5% hp is.

The only problem, well not really a problem but hard time, I have is when the enemy is "dancing" at close range around me and im trying to 1 -> 2 them and I miss my 2. Those 2s can be a real pain in the *** if you wanna execute them fast and at close/mid range. I guess im just not used to shifting down a bit my camera to get to the right position.

A few tips that i've picked up while playing 1-10 arenas that weren't mentioned here:

The Undead Surge, you dont have to ram them into a wall ( you can though) , you just have to tap the 1 a 2nd time and then eat them up. If you are into mid/late game, eat up 6-8 of them to regen, no need to get back to base.

If you are caught alone, the biggest chance you have to survive is spam 1 -> eat them up and spam it again. Usually the enemy ignores the bodies goes for you. It wont work every time, but combined with Pilar line of sight and circling around, Ive had some amazing kills with enemies raging beyond imaginable. Gets better late game, as your 1 will do decent dmg on itself while providing a regen.

Ultimate tip: If you go from the side, and pop it side ways, there's no way people can dodge ANY wraiths (nuts in my case cause of the skin). Caution: with gem of iso this causes your enemies to rage and you will be hated.

I'm also a diamond zeus and I wont lie to you, getting kills is a lot easier, as it seems the game rewards MORE for kills (even last hitting) rather than assists, which annoys me. BUT the Ah Puch presence is a lot stronger, as you can literally make Loki's Au Kuang and Thantos life so much easier, cause all they have to do is go finish the guy who ate your combo and got to 20% hp.

Hey Kriewonkel,

Thanks, I really appreciate the positive feedback and am glad you're doing better with Puch.

I'm working on my 6th level 10 so hopefully I will get around to making some more guides soon. :)

Thanks again!

Book of Thoth couldn't hurt. Also, and this is for everyone reading, keep in mind this is a Joust build. Most of what I play nowadays is Assault and when I'm fortunate enough to get Ah Puch in Assault, my build changes slightly. You almost always want to start with Chronos' Pendant as a mage in Assault. From there you can build out accordingly, but most often you're going to want to purchase Gem of Isolation before penetration. The reason is simple; to add more cc. This helps your group immensely.

Thanks for your reply.

Great guide! I like your playstyle, mirrors mine quite well. However, I would definitely try and fit Book Of Thoth somewhere in your build. Not only is that magical power a godsend, but that huge mana increase means that you can pretty much stay out until you've ammassed huge amounts of gold before you go back mid and late game. The biggest issue with Ah Puch is that he has such low sustain, and I feel Book Of Thoth helps with this.

Hey Shengoki,

I appreciate the feedback. You're right, Book of Thoth would not be a bad idea at all. He definitely does have low sustain. His saving grace here though is the fact that he is most certainly meant to be played from a distance. If you have a good front line, you can safely stay in the back and deal loads of damage.

Thanks again for the feedback!

With the current nerf comming do you think we should max out our ult last now?

Sorry for my late reply, I haven't been checking Smitefire as much lately.
Ah Puch has been "nerfed" a couple of times but it really hasn't hurt him all that much. His burst damage is still very much a threat.

The latest nerf involved removing the slow effect from his ultimate. However, in this build you will be taking advantage of Gem of Isolation which pretty much negates the nerf.

Personally, I tend to save my ult and use it defensively rather than for attacking. That is unless we're in a position to push on their tower. His ult is a MUCH bigger threat to the opposition if used to defend against a hard push against your team.

So, in summary, I have not modified my skill tree.
