Introduction

Hey folks and thank you for reading my first attempt at making a Smite Guide, and who better to start with other than our lovely Cupid: God of Love. I do want to mention that I am not a pro at this game no matter how highly I think of my skills; therefore, take any tips I might have with that in mind. I have however played quite a bit of Cupid as he was my first Legendary and I still play quite a bit of Cupid. I have been playing Smite for close to a year now and play just about every evening starting at around 9:00 PM Central time. If you have any questions feel free to send me an in game message. That being said, let's draw back that bow, let that arrow go, and get started!

Pros / Cons

PRO'S
  • Team Heals
  • Stun
  • Decent AOE Dmg
  • Escape
  • Approach w/ attack Speed Buff
  • AOE Ultimate which cripples and does Damage
  • Great Mid to Late Game

CON'S

Skills

LOVESTRUCK
Passive:

The stun from Lovestruck can be extremely useful to prevent enemies from running away from you or helping you to distance yourself from an approaching enemy. It is also an excellent way to stun multiple enemies who group themselves and can be a very effective tool to aid in a team fight when utilized properly.(More in depth use of this passive later)
This passive is clearly better utilized when adding Attack Speed to your build.

HEART BOMB
First Ability:

Your bread and butter skill! This is the skill you want to be leveling first and is excellent for securing kills. This ability is nice for clearing waves, slowing enemies, or stunning enemies. It is a skill shot, so make sure you land it!

SHARE THE LOVE
Second Ability:

Not much to go into detail about on this ability other than your passive increases the amount healed, so if you or an ally needs healing, try to work it into your passive. The other very important thing to remember about this ability is to use it often with your laning partner to generate more mana for yourself, whether they need healing or not.

FLUTTER
Third Ability:

This skill is obviously very nice for escaping or pursuing enemies, but I often see other Cupids forget to utilize the attack speed use of this skill. It is great for attacking a tower or clearing a jungle buff (especially early). Also, the speed buff to allies is nice when they are chasing or escaping.

FIELDDS OF LOVE
Fourth Ability:

This is Cupid's strongest and most devastating skill and so much fun in team fights.
A great way to secure a kill in lane and a devastating skill to use on grouped enemies in team fights. Don't forget this skill prevents enemies from using escape skills while in the target area. This can help you land that Heart Bomb to secure a kill. Also, this skill can also be used to help you escape, but please try not to put yourself in a position to have to do that. :)

Items

Before we get started on my item build, I would like to emphasize that I do not rely on Cupid's abilities damage to secure kills. I use his abilities as a crowd control to secure kills. My play style relies heavily on basic attacks for damage. If you have a hard time landing your basic attacks and tend to rely on abilities for damage, my build may not suit you quite as well. That being said, Heart Bomb and Fields Of Love will still do plenty of damage, just maybe not quite as much as someone who prefers to have the highest physical power build. The gear I have selected ensures that you are able to stay as close to or as far from an enemy as you would like while still being able to quickly stack your passive, Lovestruck.

I prefer to build a mix of attack speed, critical chance, and attack power with Cupid. While penetration comes in handy in certain instances, I find that Qin's Sais is sufficient for taking out enemies with physical defense built in and the critical chance absolutely destroys those who do not.

EARLY GAME:

is a great starting item for any hunter as it gives them back some health and mana, not much to explain here.

Let's just be honest, everyone gets boots, you need the movement speed to chase and get away from enemies, plus you get the attack speed, physical power, and a little bit of penetration. I find that the penetration is more useful than the cooldown reduction as I want the down time to stack my passive to max. Nuff said about that. This should be your first item to finish, Warrior Tabi, as soon as you get the gold and the opportunity to back.

X2: Healing without having to spend mana on Share The Love.

x2: Because you always have the teammates who don't pick up the hearts and sometimes you are just by yourself and need the mana.

sprint is so important to have early game with Cupid. Cupid is fairly weak early game, but has decent poke. Very rarely does Cupid get an outright kill early game against a smart enemy, however good and aggressive tanks tend to leave themselves vulnerable to poke. Once you have poked the enemy enough, they will flee when they feel in danger. sprint combined with Flutter WILL get you close enough to secure an early game kill. Tanks do not have enough defense built up yet to prevent your Heart Bomb from doing enough damage. I generally do not push too hard until i get Fields Of Love to ensure i get that kill. Also, tanks almost always flee towards their Hunter partner which makes your Fields Of Love even better and helps you to sometimes get an early game double kill. Cupid needs to be fed and sprint helps you do that.

TRANSITIONING TO MID GAME:

What a perfect item for Cupid. It has the attack speed you need to start really building up the use of your passive. It is also a tank shredder. The only downfall to this item is that it is an expensive item to build after boots. That's why it is important to try and secure a kill or two early game.

is another great item to get for Cupid. It adds a little bit more attack speed which only strengthens Cupid's passive and makes your Qin's Sais hurt even worse. You will also notice once this item is completed that you really start to signficantly hurt other hunters, mages, and assassins. My favorite part about this item combined w/ Qin's Sais is that tanks can no longer stand front line for very long. It really pushes them back into their dps and causes the enemy to group. This is a good sign when you have Fields Of Love in your back pocket.

is any hunter's nastiness to bring onto the playing field. Cupid is no exception. It makes all your crits hit harder (and you get plenty w/ Rage) and gives you significant physical power which makes your Heart Bombs and your Fields Of Love do great damage. A must have item in the build.

TRANSITION FROM MID TO LATE GAME:

is what is gonna make you hater's hate me until I hit you with my arrow and make you love me again. My reasoning for this in most conquests is that I obviously love the attack speed for my passive, but I also want the movement speed because at this point in the game there is a lot of moving around the map. This item gives me that extra boost and I keep it even when I do find myself in a fight. It's also a great way to keep an assassin off you when they are up close and personal wanting some love and you are not in the mood. If an assassin gets close to you, use Flutter to get away and auto attack while running backwards at full speed. Hastened Fatalis keeps you away while still shredding them.

is another great item for Cupid. This item keeps the crits coming and making them do even more damage. The passive on Malice is nice at times, but I choose this item for the shear amount of physical power combined with another 20% critical chance. With Rage, Deathbringer, and Malice in your build, more than 70% of your attacks are crits. At end game, not much can stand in the way of Cupid when the final build is complete.

ACTIVE ITEMS:

As mentioned earlier sprint is the key to getting early game kills from runners. The 2nd item you pick up is completely dependent upon the team you are playing. Obviously if you are facing an Ares or Fenrir you have to get Purification Beads. If you find you don't need Purification Beads then choose the item of your liking. Girdle of Might is never a bad choice.

BUILD SUMMARY AND REPLACEMENTS:

I know that I will get a lot of "hey, your build doesn't have any lifesteal". Trust me I know this. The play style I use is very passive and I do not put myself in a risky situation unless I know that I will secure the kill. I do not try and go toe to toe with an assassin without my group as I know that they probably do have lifesteal and I won't beat them 1 v 1 in conquest. The little damage I do take can easily be refilled with Share The Love.
For those of you out there that refuse to go without lifesteal and have a bit more aggressive playstyle, then I recommend replacing Hastened Fatalis with Asi. You will still get good attack speed while gaining penetration, but losing the movement speed I find so useful.

As far as penetration goes, I find that I am not in need of any other than the Warrior Tabi. Qin's Sais does all the work on enemy tanks you want to go after and no penetration is needed for enemy dps. I still don't find penetration all that necessary against bruiser type builds either.

The other item that could be replaced in the case the opposing team has a really good healer is Malice. If you feel you are needing the anti-healing, swap Malice for Brawler's Beat Stick.

Laning

Laning with Cupid early game is not always the easiest as he doesn't have the best lane clear until you get 3-4 points in Heart Bomb. I almost always get pushed into my tower the first few levels when facing a decent enemy team. Ymir especially is an excellent laning partner to have as his stun always secures your landing of Heart Bomb and his second ability can help you to clear waves without killing them early game. Sobek is another great laning partner as his charge and throw ability allows you easy access to land your Heart Bomb.

Lane position:

Like any other hunter, do your best to hug the outside wall. You do not want to be too close to the jungle as it is easier to get ganked that way. There are exceptions to hugging the wall, like facing Anhur. You don't want him pinning you to any walls. Also, if you are facing a Sobek you will find it beneficial to stay behind minions so he does not keep throwing you over his shoulder in a vulnerable position. I generally try to stay away from minions so that I am not taking any of the damage done to them. If an enemy hunter chooses to use an ability on you rather than the minions, more power to him. Your minions will do the damage to him for you and you can always heal.

Laning Strategy

Levels 1-3 are Cupid's most difficult levels in lane. His Heart Bomb attack is still pretty weak and will not clear the minions affectively with just 1 point in it. I rely heavily on my tank to help me clear minion waves early. That being said, it is essential that you try and secure the last hit bonus. This will help you to get out of Cupid's weakest stage faster. It's ok to let the opposing team push you into your tower. As a matter of fact, I prefer it, as it does several things to the enemy team that I like 1.) makes them think they are winning, 2.) be in position for a gank, and 3.)in position for a quick approach from me without fear of their tower.

At levesl 3-4 you should have your 2nd point into Heart Bomb and 1 point into Share The Love. This is a pretty good time to put some poke on the enemy tank. On an approaching wave I go ahead and use Heart Bomb on the first minion that comes into range. This will knock the minions down to a manageable amount of health for you to finish the front line off by auto attacking. As soon as you have finished off the front line of minions, be looking to hit the enemy tank with Heart Bomb as soon as it comes off cool down. This will cause him to retreat away from his archers to prevent the explode. This gives you time to auto attack the archers prior to the enemy tank returning to the front line. Remember to use Share The Love. This is a big advantage Cupid has against other Hunters. It is essentially unlimited mana for yourself, just make sure your tank is picking them up whether he/she needs the health or not.

Level 5-6: This is right before you are ready to back for the first time and a very opportune time for you to push for a kill.
Personally, I like to play passive and appear weak to the enemy team. When they push you into your tower, they tend to get over confident and make mistakes. As soon as you hit lvl 5 though, it is time to make an aggressive move. When you see a tank at around 75% health, land a Heart Bomb with your passive Lovestruck at full stacks. Immediately put Fields Of Love on top of him and go to town auto attacking. If your tank has any sense at all, he will do what it takes to help you finish him. If the enemy is lucky enough to survive that, then use Flutter combined with sprint to secure the kill. Early game tanks are pretty squishy to ability attacks.

If you do manage to take down the tank, put massive pressure on the enemy hunter. Your goal here is to make him back. Make him spend all his mana clearing waves by himself causing him to back, or be at low health causing him to back. You want him out of lane so that he is not getting experience. Get a few hits on tower if you can. Every little bit helps.

Levels 7-10 is when you start to transition into mid game. You no longer need to rely on your tank to clear minion waves and your tank should be out roaming around the map. At this point, you need to stay in lane unless you see the enemy hunter leave. Do your best to not let the minions get into your tower as you are earning gold as fast as you can here. At this point, Cupid is not a huge threat, but can handle minions effectively and your poke is at least pretty annoying. If two enemy God's stay in lane while your tank is roaming, then you are earning gold faster than the enemy Hunter. When your tank does come back to your lane, start putting some pressure on the enemy team. Your poke combined with your tanks is really starting to hurt the enemy team. When by myself, I play extremely passive as getting ganked is the worst thing that can happen here. Cupid needs to be fed and dying is very bad.

Post level 10 is when you should be transitioning into later Mid-Game. You should have finished Qin's Sais and be working on Rage. Your damage has now increased significantly and waves are a side thought. Hopefully you have received several helpful ganks from your jungler and have managed to knock out their tower; however, if you have not managed to secure a tower kill, it may be time to start making a move elsewhere. At this point Cupid's team fighting capabilities are very effective. If the enemy tower is not down, make sure your lane is at least pushed and transition over to middle lane to help out mid. Your side of the map should be warded therefore moving back and forth should not be a problem. When you see enemy minions approaching your tower, transition back over to re-clear.

Team Work

MID TO LATE GAME?

Cupid is an amazing god to have on your side when played correctly. Team fights are his speciality and he is very useful. As I have mentioned previously in this guide, I like to produce a tank shredder with my cupid so that I can push their pesky tanks back into their dps. This is a clever way to cause the enemy team to inadvertantly group up and prevents the enemy assassin from getting too close to you and your mages. When this happens they don't even know they are in trouble. I love initiating a kill tactic with Fields Of Love on the grouped team. Grouped to me means 3 or more enemy gods in a location my ultimate can hit them.

Now, before you initiate w/ Fields Of Love, make sure to have your passive Lovestruck at max stacks. Throw down your ultimate and pay attention to which direction the enemy is running to get out of it, cause they are all predictable and will. This makes an easy landing of your Heart Bomb attack. I try to put it on whoever is lowest and/or whoever is squishiest in the group. Usually a mage or assassin. When either your ultimate or Heart Bomb go off, the enemy is stunned and you have excellent time to get some auto attacks in. If played correctly, someone on the enemy team will be dead or so severely low on health that they will flee. Now, again, your team will notice all this and either finish off the enemy or be in a position to push an objective.

Another thing to pay attention for in a group fight. If an enemy god is near an enemy minion and you want them stunned. Heart Bomb the minion when your passive Lovestruck is at full stacks and they will be instantly stunned. This gives you free time to get some auto attacks in.

TRYING TO ESCAPE OR HELP A TEAMMATE ESCAPE?

With the build that I have suggested, escaping or pursuing is not too hard to do. Flutter combined with sprint combined with Hastened Fatalis can help you get away from or to any enemy god without much of a problem.

If you do find yourself in a sticky situation or a teammate in a sticky situation. Use your Heart Bomb on the enemy for an immediate slow. If your Lovestruck is at full stacks you can combine that with a stun as well. Also, don't forget that Flutter gives 30% run speed to allies who are in it. Also, you have your Share The Love skill to give them that much needed health.

SPLIT PUSHING

Now Cupid is not the best hunter for split pushing, but when needed Cupid is in fact a hunter and a few tactics can be used to do this. If I find that I am in need of split pushing, then I for sure need to have wards down on the map to prevent from getting ganked. Although I do have Flutter, Fatalis, and sprint, I am still fairly vulnerable to gank if more than 1 person comes at me and I do not have support. This is where Girdle of Might comes in really useful. Combining this with the attack speed buff from Flutter, a tower should go down pretty fast.

Updated lane strategy explanation.
Improved some of the aesthetic portions of the guide.
Added a split pushing section

@ Jordenito.

Thank you very much for your comments, I very much appreciate the constructive criticism and the advice. As far as the item build goes, we are going to have to just agree to disagree. I do not find penetration necessary when Qin's Sais are in the build w/ attack speed and crit. I do not deny that more damage could be squeezed out per hit or for abilities using penetration in the build, but for my passive play style, not enough to sacrifice mobility and/or attack speed. I find that Hastened Fatalis keeps me in the fight even while retreating and I cannot get that with any other item. The build I suggest allows me to do significant damage to tanks quickly and take down enemy dps in 5 or less hits when stacking as much crit as i do while being very difficult to hit myself due to the increased movement speed.

I certainly do not believe every Cupid will build this way; however, the steps I suggest above will create a very effective Cupid in a conquest match.

I have yet to figure out how to post match history. If anyone would point me in the right direction, that would be super awesome. Thanks.

There are still things that I've said in my first comment that haven't changed, so I won't say them again. But take them to consideration.

Malice isn't a good item. Since you don't build insanely high power, unlike someone like Loki, it won't serve you much. The passive on it will deal roughly 100 damage across 3 seconds. Now, that's not that appealing. Yes, the base stats are good, but there are far better options.

Your build lacks penetration. The other build has lots of pen, but the main build lacks. I'd recommend replacing Hastened Fatalis and Malice for some penetration and lifesteal.

Other than that, it's okay.

The items explanations are very good.

The skill order is perfect, though your skill explanations aren't as good as I'd like them to be. But they are not terrible.

Your laning explanation is good, but missing a critical note; and that's how to clear waves with Cupid (stacking the wave with auto attacks and then using Heart Bomb).

Team Fight section could use more expansion, but it's decent. Maybe a note about split pushing, positioning etc.

The guide itself looks pretty. Not obstructive and clean.

This is a good guide. Nothing much to say. The build is the "biggest" problem, and it could use more expanding, but overall, it's good. Upvote.

Oh, okay then. If I would've known I wouldn't have voted. P.M me when you are done, so I could review it again. I still recommend you consider my thoughts about your build,

@Jordenito

I just answered my own question. I logged off and checked post and you are right. The un-updated accidental post was there for everyone to see even though I tried archiving it.

I will go ahead and post the portion that I have finished since I can't seem to get rid of this awful one. There will be more updates to come, as it is not completely polished to my liking.

Thanks for your first reply and the skill order was not completed. I was just clicking away as this is my first guide to make. Hopefully, there is more information there you approve of this time :).

@ Jordenito:

Quick question, how much of the post are you seeing? As in the title that is not published on the actual link it states (accidently published). Which is fine, but you have made comments such as "You don't explain anything." I have tried archiving this post several different times as I published after only 1 paragraph in. It was an accident, however, I have since updated quite a bit of information. I am still not quite ready to publish, but the information that you say is not there, I have added and saved.

What I am showing as published is quite a bit more than just information about the passive. I have a team section, laning section, item section, and a skill section. Are you not seeing those other sections right now?

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hastened Fatalis is meh on him. He has a dash, a skill shot slow and a wide area slow/cripple. He doesn't need it.

Golden Bow is a bad item - in general. As of now, no one should buy it.

How about some lifesteal? some pen? Active items?

You can't put 3 points in a row to Heart Bomb at levels 6/7/8. You must skip a point if you want to do so, at level 8, and at level 9, level up both Heart Bomb & Fields Of Love.

The pros & cons are bad...
You can't state that a con is "enemies with Aegis Amulet or Aegis Pendant."

It should be more like:
Squishy
Bad Early Game
Bad Waveclear

You get the point..

You don't explain anything. Apart from the passive, you don't say anything useful in this guide. Explain the items and why you chose them, the skills and how to use them, how to farm, your role in team fights....

This is a bad guide. It lacks info, the build isn't good, the skill order is wrong, you don't explain anything...
