Sol Build

Starting Build

Build Item Hunter's Blessing Hunter's Blessing
Build Item Tiny Trinket Tiny Trinket

Machine Gun Lifesteal

Notes The preference of this build, for me, is the ease at which I can take down hunters, assassins, and other mages. The huge lifesteal with every hit, and the rapid rate at which Sol can fire at her enemies, provides great life sustain and damage. This will not work so well against tanky builds, however, given the lack of penetration. Also, as it has been suggested, beginning with Hunter's Blessing makes Hastened Ring a suitable 6th item (replacing Hunter's Blessing), and given the inferior stats of Hastened Ring to the other two rings, it is best to prioritize the other rings first.

Tanky Penetration

Notes If enemy team composition favors tanky builds, respond with Obsidian Shard to basically ignore that. The lifesteal and attack speed are still present, and with the addition of Soul Reaver you can hammer away at gods with high health. Another option may be Typhon's Fang, but this will only prolong a fight you may see finished more quickly thanks to the high magical power and passive of Soul Reaver.

Kaboom, baby!

Notes I like to switch to this build if I need to focus on abilities, instead of boxing. However, as with all my builds, I build two rings so that Sol does not lose her ability to box out of a situation. This build allows for more penetration and ability strengthening. Since the focus isn't necessarily tanks, I've removed Obsidian Shard for the flat penetration and reduced healing of Divine Ruin. Finally, I have swapped out Soul Reaver for Rod of Tahuti, as this is not only a more powerful item, but because of the passive and Sol's ability to drop targets below 50% health quickly due to her high attack speed, the use of abilities on these targets often finishes the fights in a hurry. I found more success with Rod of Tahuti than with Soul Reaver, though either will suffice.

Introduction

Oh! Hello!

My name is Jason, and I am a newcomer to Smite. I began playing because of a friend, but now I can't put it down. I have Sol to thank for that! I made this build for those who struggle with the current recommended builds, as this quickly turned the tides of battle in my favor.

After much time in training (and my first few matches getting annihilated) and playing with different items and builds, I came to prefer a build based around attack speed. Sol is insanely quick with basic attacks, and in most cases she can wreck the gods unlucky enough to stand before her. High burst builds do not work well for me, so I choose to capitalize on Sol's ability to box with the best of them, unless the situation calls for ability-based focus.

It is probably strange to make a guide so early on in one's Smite journey, but when my friend introduced me to this site I couldn't help but notice no one building the way I d0 (at least in the Season 5 guides). I'm sure there are alternatives which are equally effective, if not more so, but for those seeking something that works for their play style I hope this is the build for you.

I will continue to update the build with more options as I progress. Thank you for any and all input.

Hey Unstable,

Been seeing the progression on the build. Looks good overall, and your communication and willingness to listen to others and at the same time try things out for yourself is great.

Good also that you have an anti-tank build. However, I'm offering my own thoughts on possible revisions.
  • Machine Gun Lifesteal: as previously discussed by others in these comments, Hastened Ring is not quite the best item, due to that cooldown. It's not that I don't think it has function though, just that the movement utility is taking the place of earlier damage potential, before you have enough AS items to really take advantage of its temporary passive.

I think a better build order would be like your others, with Hastened Ring either 5th or 6th. As 6th, it'll take the place of Hunter's Blessing, which is perfect for maintaining AS without a temporary dropoff.

  • Tanky Penetration: To me, the optimal anti-tank build would incorporate the base Demonic Grip, the added Obsidian Shard, and Soul Reaver for the increasing damage against high health targets. As such, my suggestion would be to switch out Typhon's for Reaver in the tanky build. It's not essential, but that feels like it flows better to me. Typhon's is still fine, of course, if you're looking for increased sustain to engage in an elongated fight.

  • As for "Kaboom, Baby!": Reaver is great for the added burst, but again is a bit more functional against tanks with high health. It's fine here, but you might also consider alternative items.

Also, you're still incorporating Obsidian Shard in this build. Shard is again great against tanks, but brings very little against squishy gods (as low as 7-8 pen), and does bring inefficiency to your overall penetration, due to the presence of Demonic Grip's % protection reduction. Not sure if you're familiar with how those pen stats interact. If you're not, you're welcome to check out the Protection Reduction / Penetration chapter of my Items guide.

Based on the name and your writeup about focusing more on ability damage, I'm assuming your main target switches away from tanks back to squishies. You'll get better function from a flat pen item...such as either Divine Ruin (anti-heal) or Spear of Desolation (also has added CDR which is in line with you talking about using abilities more).
Thoughts?

Thanks a lot, Bran! You've given me plenty to play around with, so I shall do so. I appreciate you taking the time to provide so many options!

The tanky penetration build should have Tahuti instead of Typhon’s.

Also change the start to have Tier 2 of bancrofts instead of hunters + Tiny trinket.

Thanks to everyone for the comments so far. I spent all afternoon testing out everyone's suggestions, and mixing and matching this, that, and the other. I've updated the guide with some alternatives that worked well for me personally. Despite the stigma against Hastened Ring, I wiped the floor with enemies in Joust earlier, simply by prioritizing Bancroft's Talon and swapping out Spear of Desolation for Typhon's Fang. This was successful in 3 of 3 runs, with varying enemy team comps.

I had more success against tanky builds this time around, by adjusting the lack of penetration from my earlier item choices. The addition of Obsidian Shard went a long way, and simply adding Soul Reaver to the mix aided greatly against Ymirs and Odins (though Ymir seemed to go down with a full-blown attack speed build in previous matches, so there's that xD).

A lot of building is counter-building your opponents and knowing what works and what doesn't work on a particular god/match. For example, Ymir can get away with building damage items, but he also needs defense. I wouldn't buy any AA items on him aside from Shogun's Kusari because that has CCR, CDR, MP5, and protections.

Like you, I'm still trying to figure out how to build Sol, which is why I'm keeping an eye on this guide. Good work so far.

Hey Jason and welcome to Smite!

I'm not an expert on Sol or Smite, there are for more experienced players than me who will come by to give you advice, but your build looks not bad. As you've noticed Sol's strength and damage comes from her basic attack capability and not so much her abilities. This is probably a large reason to the success you've been seeing building around her basic attacks with attack speed items. If you're brand new to Smite you're probably a low level still but as you play more and gain experience you'll start playing against higher competition and might find that one build won't cut it for every match. At this point you might want to have some different situational items ready just in case so you can counter depending on the enemy team comp. I'll let someone more experienced explain some good counter items and strategy but what I sometimes like to build on Sol that maintains your basic attack focus is Polynomicon. What this does is after an ability, your next basic attack in the next 8 seconds gains +75% of your magical power as damage and can occur once every 3 seconds. This can really increase your burst when used after skills like Radiance and Stellar Burst.

This is something you can try if you want but if you do end up trying it let me know how it works out.

Thank you for your input! Yes, I just experienced my first less-than-decent Joust match against a tank-heavy team. Basic attack damage didn't do so well against them, so I realized I needed to switch to a more bursty build. It helped get some kills, but I didn't catch it in time to save the match (my team's Chaac and Ne Zha may have suffered from my initial build).

I'll be sure to practice with Polynomicon :)

Please don’t start recommending Poly on Sol. It hasn’t been good on her since the change to her 2 and has awkward usage with her kit, unlike Chronos (AA-cancel/weave between abilities) and Freya (Part Of main combo which procs on her 1). Now, Soul Gem could be the better option as it can proc on her 2, however it relies on constant damaging with ability usage which outside of the ult is mostly coming from the 2 - making soul gem stacks harder to obtain without 30/40% Cooldown reduction - building cooldown based however is lacklustre at the moment in Sol and instead I recommend the build I gave in a separate comment instead.

What changed with her 2 that makes Poly not good on her anymore?

Build Order is lacking. Bancrofts is a staple first/second item on Sol before or after Boots. Hastened Ring is also a lacking item in its current state, although I have rarely seen it built on her by some pros, more recently the item has been moved away from for good reason. Getting Hastened second also leaves you with a very low amount of power early game. Since you like to play her heavily basic attack focused I will give a better build: Bancroft’s Talon / Shoes of the Magi (can build either first but depends on the game.), Demonic Grip, Divine Ruin OR Spear of Desolation, Telkhines Ring, Rod of Tahuti OR Obsidian Shard. Better start is: Hunter’s Blessing, Tiny Trinket and 2 health and 2 mana pots. Also the reason this is appearing as guide and not a build is because you wrote a lot under the build. For reference look at the recent build from here: https://smiteprobuilds.com/?p_filters_page=1&p_filters_search=&p_filters_god=2074&p_filters_pro=~&p_filters_opponent=~&p_filters_role=~&p_filters_league=~&p_filters_sort=~

What is it about Hastened Ring that causes people to disregard it? I tried the more bursty builds and really struggled with those. But now I have recently found that I am stopped fairly easily against tank-heavy team comps, so I knew there had to be some kind of middle ground. Perhaps your suggestion is what I am needing, given the added penetration and magical power, whilst maintaining two of the rings for speed. I shall give it a shot! Thank you for the input, as well as the link :)

Kriega1 (143) | October 1, 2018 5:53pm
Hastened Ring has bad base stats and the item’s passive having a cooldown makes it unreliable. My build is heavy basic attack focused as well - with the 2 rings and Sol’s passive you should have over enough attack speed. Demonic Grip needs it stacks applied first to shred tanks, which is why you can also pick up Obsidian as well to start shredding tanks instantly (and applying demonic even further increases protection shred). But building both won’t be necessary in every game, especially arena. All dependent on team composition.
