So I jumped back in with both feet by playing Ares in an arena match and it was...interesting. Keep in mind that I haven't played Smite in over a month (since before was released), so I wasn't sure how well I would fair. I knew the other team was in trouble when I saw the other team had 2 guardians and 2 warriors with no hunter or assassin. I feel kinda sorry for the other player because my team followed up on my initiations while his generally didn't. Of course that was salty as all get out afterwards, but I place a lot of the blame on their performance. Also, those builds...man, those builds. I know I'm out of the loop, but man...those builds...

You're not all that out of the loop honestly. The core builds, at least in teamfight modes, aren't all that changed. Most of the adjustments were for Conquest balance. Biggest thing to consider is the start...in Arena, I'd go for Specialist's Blessing on a lot of gods, but it's not currently available (not sure if they were just dropped or what).

Smite Guru isn't up to speed on their items, so it's hard to tell what some people built, but builds all around seemed jacked up. I do find 's build pretty interesting, but don't really know why built ...and I have no clue how she did so much damage with absolutely 0 pen against a really tanky team, lol.

with ... with 50% CDR, + enemy BOTH with when the biggest threats overall were magical...but I think the grossest build was . XD

Now to your points:

I looked for the specialist blessings, but couldn't find them and none of the other blessings looked like they fit arena.
I think the Nu Wa player was relying on her passive, but I would have built pen and power personally. I did build Void Stone 2nd as Ares, so they may have been relying on that. It worked out at least.
I don't know what the other team was thinking with their builds or their makeup. As for Neith, she's 16 1/2 and never really delved into theory crafting, so that would explain her build. I did talk to her about her Bacchus build in the clash game we played afterwards. Strangely enough, I had the most kills as Chaac until towards the end of the game. Our Hel said they were lagging and I made too many mistakes. If it weren't for the other team's Bastet having connection issues, I think we would have lost that game. That Skadi was giving me fits the entire game. The Au Puch tried to until I killed him a time or two and made him start running from me.

So as you can see, my builds aren't exactly optimized anymore, so any suggestions you have, I'd appreciate 'em. I know I forgot to get for , but I think I did very well. My 2nd death was towards the end of the match because I wanted to help my team close the match out. We won right after I died. ;)

So, (along with Attacker's and Defender's) were meant to be non-Conquest starter items...keeping it very simple overall. Then HR decided that the Conquest Blessings were great and that they'd open use of those to non-Conquest modes as well. Not sure if this means they decided not to activate the 3 non-Conquest ones, or what, but Attacker's and Defender's blessings honestly sort of suck IMO.

IF it does become available, Specialist's is sort of like was...in that, as a cheap starter, its big thing was that it provides some early CDR. The way you stack it makes it great for group healers, but it can still be stacked by dealing damage to enemies...up to 3 stacks per ability use, and it can be used on minions. At 50 stacks, it provides 10% move speed.

So even in Arena, I like its stats...for ability users of all types, it can allow you to forego boots/shoes if you want...or get the normal boots/shoes and have higher MS for survival.

One thing to note about magical defense...S4, most mages started and ended with 30 magical protection...no increase with each level, so unless they built protection, 10-20 pen could still be very effective, or combining with would get them true damage.

Now...all mages have 48 inherent magical protection at 20, and Deso got a 5 pen nerf. So more pen is a bit more needed. But yeah, it worked out for her.

Oops, was your daughter or friend? SMH I need to be kinder with my words...I see now that she was grouped with you and you're in the same clan. If you ever see me IRL, you're allowed to give me a good punch in the nose XD

That said, I don't know the 2nd item of hers in the Clash match, but she took and mitigated a TON, and that's totally not a build I would have used (both and ).

I personally try not to get . I know it provides a ton of survival potential, but it doesn't provide any other utility...as an alternative for magical protection, consider getting (multiple enemies had lifesteal of some type)...or you could also have considered (also somewhat selfish but CDR would have been maxed which is always nice for .

Looks like you definitely needed for the ****load of slows...only other thing I'd say is that is a more situational now. Best against very tanky teams, and the only tanky one was ...and it doesn't help against objectives like towers/phoenixes.

But overall, your build was fine. Minor tweaks if anything, but you did great...you took a lot of damage so you were doing your job as tank, and you had 2nd highest damage on your team.

You don't know the , do you? No? Good. 3x crit build on Bastet, WTF?!?!?!?!? (Also, why did get lifesteal?)

She's just a friend, Bran. She's a troubled girl I sorta took under my wing because she was being preyed upon by not so nice people. Anyway, that's a discussion for another place. And don't worry about it, Bran, I poke fun at her as well. Every time she says fight me, I tell her 1 1/2 years. She's a good kid who needs more positive role models in her life.

I looked at the passive for which is why I picked it up because I felt I needed more damage towards the end of the match. I may go with either or next time. I was really surprised I outkilled our ADC for most of the match, but that's life I guess.

Played my first 2 conquest matches...neither went particularly well but I was having a blast nevertheless. Had a full 5 man for both games, with boogie, Draisaitl, Taco, and Pappsi.

Also...Pappsi lost his mouse and so was playing WITH A TRACKPAD. Pappsi, you're not allowed to load SMITE again until you get a mouse. Your control scheme you were telling us about is jacked. XD

In this one, I went Discordia mid. Almost had a first blood on the , but then it turned south on me...well, the whole team was getting blown up, but the in particular was having a fun time ganking me, despite me having wards up. I was staying out too long while partially hurt, so my fault on that.

No one knew standard starts (my friends don't read my Conquest guide *sad face*) and well, there's actually no meta at this point so...can't really blame them.

In any case, we surrendered because it was such a huge blowout. Not the most promising start to S5, lol.

In this second match, I was playing my old friend ADC.

This one sort of went better, but it was a huge back and forth that we honestly should have lost for being stupid...but we got an unfortunate break from the and DCing right before our last push. Also...their comp was jank...not one true tank, so...

I did pretty good damage (a couple hundred shy of 60k) but I died 13 times (yuck), which was mostly me being too aggressive because that's what I do when I'm ...I get too eager. Also, at the start of the match I figured I might need movespeed more, so I got ...I should have just stuck with the standard and , as Beads would have saved me at least 4 or 5 times. Live and learn.

Also, I love and everyone should get it. So convenient.

So, didn't get to play any Conquest...I only played with Sheridan and Luis last night, and neither prefers Conquest I think.

That said...

Nike feels pretty good. Didn't really have any knockback to worry about, but I barely ever play her and she's always been fun.
Matchmaking still at its finest.

Item thoughts: Gauntlet of Thebes is obviously best used in slower modes like Conquest, but I felt I got some good use out of it in Joust and Arena as well. That said, the high protections are great once stacked, but it really delays any early CDR you can get with physical gods...sure, you can get Mage's Blessing and wait for it to finish stacking, or consider Specialist's Blessing (once it's activated by HR), but otherwise, it's that + Boots (all of which have no CDR) before being able to get BoV, Genji, or whatever. Guardians have it a bit better, as they can just choose Shoes of Focus.
