So I was called an idiot last night during a round of Assault. Curious about others' opinions. Let me lay out the scenario briefly.
My first time playing He Bo, and was only mage.
Our team had destroyed both towers and the Phoenix.
Both of our towers were still up.
My team got wiped out in the enemy base and I retreated.
I think 4 of the enemy were still alive with plenty of health, and the minions started attacking our first tower.
Oh, and there was an enemy Arachne.

That said, I stayed in the relative safety of the towers. I had quick/max CD w/ Chronos' Pendant and Shoes of Focus, and was basically just using Waterspout when it was up. He Bo's other two basic skills are #1 (close range)and #2 (an escape, and not a great one at that). Teammate at that point told me to defend and push, and when I didn't rush into the middle of 4 enemy gods, was called an idiot. He (assuming a he) proceeded to say that I was a mage (duh) and that being so allowed me to poke. Even maxed, Waterspout wasn't killing all of the minions, especially when they split (melee vs ranged). I figured that staying alive and even just being a presence was better than distracting them for 2 seconds before dying.

Anyway, when my team respawned, we proceeded to push them all the way back and win.

Am I wrong? Am I missing something? I'm not a full noob anymore, but I'm also not an expert, so...just looking for some feedback. I hate it when people are jerks. Totally unnecessary, but it did make me think.

If someone is telling you to push when all/most of the enemy team is alive and most of your team isn't, dont. There's no reason to put yourself in that much danger. However on the aspect of poking, if the enemy is getting close enough, you should definetely poke them with waterspout. He Bo is great at harass, so try to just hit enemies with his 3 without fully engaging in that situation. At least that's what I'd do.
Favorite Roles: Jungle, Mid
Favorite Gods: Sun Wukong, Loki, Thanatos, Ares
Never give up, because you move like a jaguar.

If you're the only one up against a larger number of enemies, your job is to slow them down, but to also survive. Hold them off as long as you can at your tower and retreat when they begin to push in. You can't take on four enemies by yourself as a mage. If you lose a tower, that's fine. It's better you lose one tower and stay alive to try and slow them down from taking the second tower.

In short, you were in the right.

Thanks guys. Logic told me the same, but when others start telling me what to do, I assume they have more experience then me. Thought, "maybe I'm missing something." Add to that the fact that I wasn't doing so well with He Bo (was 3-4, I think, all from Arachne Ult pulls), and Neith (Mr. "you idiot") was 5-4 or 4-3.

From my first experience with him, I definitely have more appreciation for an "easy" mage with lane clearing abilities like Ao Kuang. He Bo definitely takes more precision, and I haven't figured out the best times to roll out his #2 skill, other than to get the hell away. Excited to learn the other new gods on rotation, as I first started playing the game with the last rotation.

If I would've been in your situation, I would've retreated to the 2nd tower and wait for my team to return there if I couldn't have held the 1st tower. Greedy enemies don't think twice before tower diving a single god and they succeed most of the times.

If you'll listen to other angry people every time you play you might end up dying in vain a lot of times and maybe quit smite before it even begins to be fun.

When logic tells you something, it's usually right. Sadly, in this game, logic does not always equal common sense, in that a lot of people tend not to use logic, so it's not all that common. There is absolutely no point in trying to defend a tower by yourself that's inevitably going to fall. All that's going to happen is that you're going to die and the tower is going down. Try to slow down the enemy as much as possible at that tower, but as soon as the enemies take a step toward you, start retreating to the second tower.

He Bo is a fun one. It's true he doesn't have as good of wave clear as other mages, but he hits hard as hell, so he's very intimidating.

Romanians: I'm definitely having fun overall. Only game I've been playing lately (only get to play for a couple of hours late at night after my kids have gone down. I'm an old man (36). Don't let jerks get to me too much, so I brushed this one off.

Since the new god rotation started, I guess it's been a re-learning process to a degree, as I haven't done very well with the new ones I've played ( He Bo and Sun Wukong so far. Haven't been given Geb or Anhur yet, and Bastet was one of the first gods I unlocked when I started playing last month. Love Bastet though...right before the referred He Bo round, I went 15-5 as Bastet.

SoapSunds: Last night, played He Bo again, and was negative K/D on the winning team almost until the end. Then, as I was mostly powered up, I dove into the midst of a team push, and got a triple kill with my Ult, Water Cannon and Water Spout. Now I see how much damage he can do. Ended up 9-8 I think.
