In my own opinion, toxic players are those who do not recognize the difference between criticism and personal attacks. To them, they are one and the same. Any criticism towards them or their behavior is taken personally, while their own verbal abuse is merely unorthodox criticism.

One can be overly hostile and insulting without being toxic. I met a player who kept insulting us whenever we made a mistake. This same player actually listened when we told him what he was doing wrong. You can be an annoying insulting teammate while still being a good team player, and some of his...advice was fundamentally sound.

Wait... so was he a toxic player or not?

As much of a ****head he was, I'd say not. A toxic player ignores reality to suit their worldviews. They're impossible to argue with and cannot take advice or criticism or anything.

True enough, but that's the object of the game: to win. But people who specifically set out to make it unenjoyable, they're toxic. You can lose and still enjoy the game, even if not necessarily as much as if you had won. But sore winners compound that.

I should rephrase it, then, it's someone who makes the game unenjoyable through their actions and attitude, be they on your team or the other, and do this outside of the normal game elements.
