Poll Question:

How much thought do you put into builds?
I follow Hi-Rez's recommended items or use auto-buy.
Meh...I just build whatever, and I kick ass anyway.
I've experimented and know what items work for me.
I rely on pro builds and the meta.
I go deep on itemization, and always try to build efficiently and effectively.

I'm pretty big on build itemization. I'm a casual player, and my skill level is probably around average at best.

I enjoy winning, and while that's not the end-all, I also feel an obligation to my teammates, and so in order to make myself as effective as possible, I need to consider builds and items more than others (like Marki, Mr. "I just do whatever."). Also, it just really interests me.

So I ask you...how much thought do you put into your builds? How much effort do you put in to understand the mechanics behind your choices with regard to the gods you play? Do you consider costs and efficiency, think a lot about counter-building, etc.?

*edit* Also, a list of my favorite items right now for various reasons and uses:

I chose the 3rd option. I buy my favorite items, some counter-building, and test a new option when I hear it's good.

When I first started playing, I was under the impression that certain items were just simply better than others (by the stats they provided). As I continued playing though, I realized that HiRez constantly updates items and really works towards making all items viable, balanced, and effective at serving different purposes. Keep in mind that this was also during the time that I was figuring out how to play and trying to learn which items did what.

Once I figured out my playstyle with certain gods (tanky, offensive, supportive, etc.), the items I built weren't just for their stats, but for their ability to support my playstyle. I also went from just trying not to die in a match to being able to fill my role for the betterment of my team. My reasoning went from being, "I will build this item because it gives me good stats", to, "I will build this item because of the benefits it gives to my playstyle and my team".

So in summary, I always try to build the best way for the situation at hand and the playstyle that I'll be implementing that match. To the point where I don't even want to play a god if I don't know all of my options for building them properly.

Mostly the third but I more just edit builds I find here to fit my playstyle more. I only really have one completely original build that I came up with myself.

I watch what the pro's build, and then modify it to suit me and my play style.

If you follow Hi-Rez' recommendations you'll probably lose a lot. Just look at the recommended one for Cupid, lol. One of my friends is too lazy to buy items and upgrade skills so she turns on auto buy and auto skills and she kicks *** with Awilix

Option 3 here. I am just starting to get more in depth with rational thinking behind builds..but I am stubborn and like the items I normally get so it is hard for me to stray from that when I know it can work.

I like to think I put some thought into my builds as I do consider the costs and efficiency of items and abilities together (or inefficiencies). I focus more on costs in like Arena as it can be tougher to build a full build until the very end. So I tend to build and keep more bridge items like Ichaival and also starters like Sands of Time. Other than that, I do do some counter building, mostly against healers, but I do look at enemy builds to see if they have protection built already or not and go from there.
