I'm still experimenting with Book of Thoth and working it into the build without disrupting early cooldown reduction.

I don't feel as relevant in a match if I delay Chronos' Pendant but I also don't want to stack too late in the match.

Book of Thoth brings a ton of power that works well with Janus' high scaling though, and can really put some added damage into his ability chains.

As of now, proposed build after Mage's Blessing and Lost Artifact is:

Shoes of the Magi
Chronos' Pendant
Book of Thoth
Obsidian Shard

Book of Thoth would give a good amount of power on him, but in all seriousness I think that ignoring Book and just rushing Chronos' Pendant start on him could still be the best, due to how much he benefits from that CDR from Chronos' Pendant stats and passive.

So start: Magic Shoes, Lost Artifact, 1 Mana Potion or 1 Multi Potion

Or: Mage's Blessing, Lost Artifact, 2x Healing Potion and 2x Mana Potion.

Full Build: Shoes of the Magi, Chronos' Pendant, Soul Gem, Obsidian Shard, Soul Reaver, situational ( Rod of Tahuti or Divine Ruin).

But experiment and see what suits you best.

Anytime we see items or item combos that aren't always meta, I always feel it's nice to have some kind of explanation in the guide.

In this case, it's the already brought up double stacking situation. Kriega has a good point about Warlock's Staff being unnecessary due to his mobility. DV-8, you countered with the concept being strictly for damage potential...which I can understand, but also feel that there are perhaps better ways to go about that damage. Being a bit of devil's advocate here.
  • A bit more early pen could be functional. If you indicate getting Mage's Blessing as the starter (which I'd assume here but you didn't actually list), then that CDR means you could switch Shoes of Focus to Shoes of the Magi. This specific comment isn't addressing a replacement for Warlock's Staff, it's just my first point.

  • Rod of Tahuti late could also be nice...paired specifically with Book of Thoth and Soul Reaver, you've got a ton of power to get a really nice power boost on that passive, and you WILL get effect from that passive in a teamfight.

  • More ability spamming via Chronos' Pendant can also give you more damage overall...less burst, perhaps, but more sustained. As a solo CDR item, it would be plenty of CDR for the entire build.

  • Also, if you're talking damage potential, are you talking overall for the completed build, or for an advantage at specific points of the game? If the 2nd point, then Warlock's 2nd is going to slow down your threat at that early stage of the game. I understand getting it 1st in a double-stacking situation, since it requires more stacks, but Book of Thoth will give the better early-game damage advantage, between the two.
So, that was devil's advocate. Don't get me wrong, I love Warlock's purely due to the fact that it gives a lot of health and I suck, so that would be my general pref.

It was more of a late game focused build. Janus can farm pretty safely, and when both items are stacked he becomes a real damage threat. It is then that I focused on penetration and cooldown reduction.

Upon feedback and experimentation, I don't think I prefer this route anymore. I like to be more active in the early/middle stages and take advantage of Janus' superb utility. I have made the builds more comprehensive, and you should find them more agreeable now.

Thanks for the feedback!

I definitely feel like Warlock's Staff is unnecessary on Janus due to the high safety of his portals and his higher damage potential with other builds. I also shouldn't have to say that double stacking is not good on 99% of mages.

Here is what you should build instead: Shoes of the Magi, Chronos' Pendant, Soul Gem, Divine Ruin, Obsidian Shard, Soul Reaver.

If you really had to Keep Warlock's Staff I would build: Warlock's Staff, Shoes of the Magi, Chronos' Pendant, Divine Ruin, Obsidian Shard, Soul Reaver.

If you don't need anti-heal (which you will in most games) then swap Divine Ruin for Spear of Desolation.

The whole concept of double stacking is to strictly enhance damage potential. I've had success double stacking on several mages such as Janus, He Bo, and Kukulkan.

Double stacking is ok on Kukulkan due to his passive (and vulnerability without warlocks), but double stacking on He Bo and Janus is ill-advised due to restricting builds and as there is other optimal build paths for them. Janus greatly benefits from cooldown reduction and burst focused items like Ethereal Staff, Soul Gem and Chronos' Pendant while He Bo benefits from items like Bancroft's Talon and Soul Reaver, (maybe Warlock's Staff as a mid laner but He Bo performs better in jungle role).

I recommend you check out the builds that some pros like Wlfy use for Janus in ranked listed in Build 2 of Tlaloc's guide: https://www.smitefire.com/smite/guide/janus-the-2-faced-bastard-s5-18045
