Replaces mages blessing with Soul reaver, because it will help get that early damage with your corpse and then the explosion should kill them.

This is my first smite build and I have no clue if i did anything correct, but this is my build for him and I switch it up occasionally and get soul reaver and rod of tahuti if need be.
So I like to use his 1 to throw out the demons and quickly explode them before they even get to the location this results in them getting there right as the explosion happens and causes mass panic amidst the back line. If that doesn't finish them thats when I throw out his Fleeting breathe to try and get that dot damage to kill them. I've been in several games where they'll pop aegis out as soon as I throw out the first row of corpse and that's when I use fleeting breathe and explode it quickly on them.
Ah puch is a team oriented player he is good for helping people getting kills, and also very good at stealing kills and half health anyone on the team.
Ah puch is a very deadly god even when not known how to play, I hope this guide has helped you establish a firm basis of how to play, what to build, and when to drop some bodies.
Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join session-based arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. Smite is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DotA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat. And, instead of clicking a map, you use WASD to move, dodge, and fight your way through the detailed graphics of SMITE's battlegrounds.

An alternate direction for added survivability instead of using Warlock's Staff would be Book of Thoth + Book of the Dead. Otherwise, you can consider adding protections of some type... Magi's Cloak or Mantle of Discord, perhaps. Gem also gives some health.
The "throwaway" (non-core) item in your build list is Spear of Desolation. If you need more space, Rod of Tahuti can go also.
ALSO...your skill leveling is messed up. You've only got 4 levels in your Surge, and 6 in Explosion. You should probably switch your level 7 and 8, put level 11 into Breath, and max out Breath (if that's what you prefer) before finishing off Surge.
Build 1: Warlock's Staff, Shoes of Focus, Divine Ruin, Gem of Isolation, Spear of the Magus, Chronos' Pendant.
Build 2: Book of Thoth, Shoes of Focus, Spear of the Magus, Gem of Isolation, Spear of Desolation, Soul Reaver.
Consider Obsidian Shard as a replacement to Spear of the Magus against teams with multiple tanks (3 or more, or tanks and squishies who build magical protection). Also consider Magi's Cloak against heavy Crowd Control and Mantle of Discord against high burst compositions.
And giving proper starters that your build is missing:
Start 1: Mage's Blessing, Uncommon Staff, 1 Healing Potion and 2x Mana Potion.
Start 2: Mage's Blessing, Spellbook, 2 x Healing Potion and 1 Mana Potion.
DO NOT double stack on Ah Puch. Also, I don't think Shaman's Ring and Rod of Tahuti are that worth it on him either.
Now that Undead Surge provides 2 corpses even at level 1 (instead of level 3 like it used to), it's now likely better to concentrate on your Corpse Explosion and Fleeting Breath first, due to their higher damage potential. You'll start with Undead Surge, but probably won't put any more points into it until later.
You'll probably also consider delaying further levels in Empty the Crypts (except 1 point at level 5) until you've gotten your other abilities up.
I can see how you don't find Spear of the Magus to be helpful. The way you've described your gameplay style is a simple one, using the basic 1-2 combo (and yes, doing one right after the other is actually extremely common...you always try to burst right after the corpses hit max range or the enemy). This doesn't get much out of Magus' stacking protection reductions.
To get the most out of Magus, when you recognize a situation where you can get a kill, you actually lead with Fleeting Breath. If you also get Gem of Isolation, you can stay close to them even if they're retreating due to the slow...that slow, with the ticking damage, will last 6 seconds, which is extremely long.
Once you've gotten multiple ticks, THEN you unleash your 1-2 combo. Against squishy gods that built 0 protections, even at level 20, you'll deal true damage (no mitigations), and that damage is going to be significantly higher. Thing is, you have to know how to use Spear of the Magus if you want to get the most out of it.
It also works well with your ult. Ah Puch can be a juicy target, due to his lack of escape. Save your ult for when people try to gank you. Immediately pop it...with Gem's slow, you should be able to create some distance, and all the while, Magus will be stacking on that enemy. Turn and blast with the 1-2 for high damage.
Also, I personally find Chronos' Pendant to be extremely helpful. Sure, his CD's are fairly low, BUT...if you're spamming your abilities, the passive extra 1 second CD every 10 seconds is always going to help. And you'll have your ult up significantly sooner than if you didn't have it. It's not necessarily core, but it's very, very nice to have.
(FYI, 10% extra damage from Shaman's Ring isn't all that much. If you deal 500 damage, that's only an extra 50. If you were to get Chronos instead, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to deal more damage overall, if you're consistently connecting with your abilities)
If you're interested in learning more about penetration and protection reduction, check out this chapter of my Items guide.
And if you are using him correctly then Spear of the Magus is good. Thow your 1,3 and then your 2. Remember your 3 and ult are damage over time abilties.
