Introduction

What's going on everyone Stuke here a new guide for my Warrior series. In this installment, I'll be giving you a guide on the heavenly protector, the guardian of Earth and the Heavens, slayer of demons and dragons alike, plus went toe-to-toe with the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, and won. Ladies, Gentlemen, and Deities of all kind, I present you with your hero, Erlang Shen.
Note: you don't have to follow this guide to the smallest detail, these are suggestions on how to play Erlang Shen. I encourage you to look at the comment section below and see other suggestions.

Who is Erlang Shen?

Erlang Shen is a Physical, Melee, Warrior that utilizes his basic attacks as the focus of his damage and using his kit for mostly control and steroids. Playing as a front-line fighter, Erlang can cause a ton of trouble for the enemy team.

Pros / Cons

Pros
  • High Single-Target Damage
  • High Attack Speed
  • High Crowd Control
  • Doggo

Cons
  • Tad-bit Squishy
  • Heavily Countered by CC-Lockdowns
  • Problem with Ranged Targets

Abilities

As stated in Shen's lore, he brings a hunting dog with him wherever he goes and for in-game whenever Erlang Shen lands an auto-attack the dog takes a bite out of the opponent.
Note: Unlike Skadi’s Kaldr, The Winter Wolf, you HAVE TO land a basic attack on the target you're hitting, whether it be a minion or a god, for the dog to attack as well. It's also good to note that if the enemy gets too far away from you, your dog won't chase, UNLIKE KALDR.
This is the main component in Erlang's fighting style, upon activation Shen gains a boost in his damage and ignores the movement penalties. After using this ability, landing successful basic attacks can reduce the cooldown as well.
Note: Unlike Bakasura’s Butcher Blades, you don't get a passive power increase, so he won't be as powerful as he would be if he had that passive.
This is Erlang Shen's main clearing tool, you throw out a spear that deals damage in an AoE. Here's the interesting part of the ability, any god caught in the center of the AoE will be rooted and crippled for a short duration.
Note: Unlike Khepri’s Solar Flare, this ability has a bit of a way to travel so if your target times it right they can dodge the root and cripple from the spear.
An ability so good, it's used by two gods. Erlang Shen has transformed into two animals with different effects. In Mink form, Shen hits all minions and stops at the first enemy god hit, when Shen hits an enemy he gets a boost to his attack speed for a duration. In Turtle form, Shen knocks-up everything that gets in his way and gains a health shield for a duration.
Note: Unlike Sun Wukong’s 72 Transformations, where Sun has three forms to choose from and has more control then Shen. Erlang's transformation helps him out in giving him a helping hand for his auto-attack play-style.
This is where Erlang gets a majority of his control. After taunting any enemy in a cone in front of him, Shen gains damage mitigation. But that's not all if he survives the duration of his ultimate he gains health back as a reward for not dying.
Note: You might notice that this is like Athena’s Confound but better. Well, unlike Athena, Erlang Shen doesn't have the natural defense to survive this ultimate so try to know when to attack and when to fall back to get some health back for surviving the assault.

Items to Consider

Being one of a few warriors who utilize auto-attacks, he benefits from items that work by hitting basic-attacks as his doggo counts as a basic. Outside of his basics, all his abilities do little damage otherwise so no need for building items for ability damage. Some defense is needed as he will be the front-line fighter for the team. While he can solo, his jungle potential is a bit more promising as he can clear fast and tank hits for the team. Here is a selection of items that can synergize with Erlang Shen that could be a nice addition to your build.

While Erlang has healing in his ultimate and a health shield in his turtle form, his sustain is still fairly low in terms of convenience so get this item to fix that.
While I prefer making myself faster than my opponent slower, the extra health is more beneficial to warriors than better movement like for Hastened Katana.
Once you use up his kit, Erlang resorts to his basic attacks. Having this item in your back pocket when your abilities are on cooldown and you have a way to stay in the fight much longer. Not to mention the lifesteal makes it easier to box the enemy.

Tips, Tricks, & Combos

  • Bite Bigger than his Bark
Your hound is the most important part in your damage output. You're getting an extra hit for each basic you land. Utilize this with items that provide benefits for hitting your autos.
  • Disrupt and Control
Your abilities are not for attacking but for CC, sustain, and steroids. Using them at the right time in the right order can change the way a fight goes.

Erlang's abilities are more for steroids and control than to dish damage, so here's a set of lock-down or engagement combos to use during solo or team fights.
Using pin to root an opponent and following up with 72 Transformation, more specifically Tutle Form, and you got yourself a fair bit of control as well as some more tankyness for a fight.
If you want to be more aggressive or take objectives faster, use Mink Form from 72 Transformation then poping Spot Weakness to hit faster and hit harder.
Ultimate Combo
Start by using Pin to keep the target in one place, then knocking them up with turtle from 72 Transformations. While in the air quickly cancel out of turtle form and use 9 Turn Blessing to further the control with a taunt as well as a heal. You can also use Spot Weakness to dish out more damage while the enemy is caught in the fight.

Stages of the Game

Early Game
Apply pressure to the enemy lane as you can quickly clear the lane with your hit chain + doggo combo. Focus on bullying the opponent and keep them at bay while you farm the lane.
Middle Game
You can roam if you like or stay in lane and destroy it. After you've destroyed the tower, you can begin to roam. Gank the enemy with turtle drifts and (literally) throw them off guard.
Late Game
Harass the hell out of the enemy back-lines (mage/hunter) and get out with your abilities and teammates for complete dominance in the fights.

In Conclusion

To wrap it with a nice little bow, Erlang's playstyle of being a hyper-aggressive auto-attack bruiser whose role is to harass the enemy to death. With a kit design to help with survival and augmenting your auto-attacks, he can be scary if known to his full potential. Remember these small details, utilize your doggo's extra basic, keep the enemy off guard with CC, and show them what a hero of the people looks like.

i would add in Pridwen aswell, it really helps with his Ult, plus the cooldown bonus is great. Also something i have been using for test purposes and has been working is Caduceous shield. It gives some power, protections and health, plus it increases the health regain. plus in teamfights if you have a healer ally, it will help them too, since it often makes more sense for a warrior to buy caduceous shield over a mage/guard with Rod of Asclepius.

I would also note that Frostbound Hammer is useful if you are going up against another AA god like Bellona or another Erlang.

I can't tell if this is a jungle or solo build. It wouldn't suit either.

Finally an Erlang guide. Would swapping out Hide of the Urchin for Shogun's Kusari be a wise choice?

I would replace it with Gladiator's Shield or Mystical Mail lategame. (I prefer to swap gladiator's for Void Shield though).

I would swap Pestilence as well if you somehow did not need Anti-heal.

Though yes, you could swap out Hide of the Urchin.

I've always felt Mystical Mail was more of a lane/bully item, that drops off late-game, when enemy protections are higher. I know it does provide good health, but in combination with the mediocre level of physical protection, I'd prefer Midgardian Mail for similar stats myself.

Also...if Stuke has Mystical 3rd, and Gladiator's second, then they're not options to replace Urchin anyway (and Glad Shield is a bridge item to be sold late). Was this a typo?

@Tlaloc, if you built enough health earlier, then you could definitely consider Shogun's Kusari, either in place of Hide of the Urchin or Pestilence. All depends on need and what you want to counter.
