Magical Defense Options

Notes Talisman of energy is a great magical option, and as a good physical and magical all rounder, cad shield works very well on him, but if they dont have much magical it could always be your only magical option if you get a big lead.

Core Items (Usually)

Notes Toxic Blade is usually required if you want to box the enemy hunter in your ultimate as they nearly always have some form of lifesteal. In the rare games when no healing or lifesteal exists then you can obvisouly skip this item. Hastened Katana I found usually works better than Frostbound Hammer but if you Prefer the Health on Frostbound and the enemy team dont have a way to cleanse slows then go for Frostbound

Items to Consider Last

Notes If you find you are getting shut down too quickly then opt into a Gauntlet of Thebes but on the contrary if you are dominating the game then get a Stone Cutting Sword. A nice middle ground to consider is The Sledge

General Tips

Farming

Starting off
The trick to mastering Vamana is to take advantage of his hyper farming capabilities.
Once you can get over his poor early game and have your boots online, you want to start placing deep Wards in the enemy jungle, either by the enemy Blue Buff, Back Harpy Camp, or if your feeling daring, the enemy Yellow Buff. These wards will allow you and your team to see the rotations of the enemy jungler and allow you to make plays accordingly.

Proxying
Once you know it is safe and you see the enemy jungler leave your side of the map, you can start proxying your wave past the enemy tier 1 tower. Vamanas Umbrellarang and Armored Umbrella should allow you to clear most if not all the wave efficiently.

Invading Enemy Camps
This gives you time to start invading the enemy camps and to put the jungler behind by either taking white, blue, or the greatest flex, the enemy Yellow Buff!. The pattern is to proxy a wave, take a camp, proxy a wave, take another camp, etc. Make sure you proxy before doing any of this or before you back or rotate to mid as it will allow you time to move around without missing xp.

What to do when Ganked
The Best thing about Vamana is he is incredibly safe to do this. Your dash Clear The Path is a great way to get you out of danger and can usually make you get away from the enemy solo and jungler. Remember, if your proxying and the solo laner comes to stop you, that's time in which they arnt clearing wave themselves so that will put them behind as long as you stay alive. Vamanas ultimate Colossal Fury even if you are similar level is a great way to turn ganks around and if your ultimate is up you can play more risky and deep into the jungle. If invading the enemy Yellow it is best to make sure you have this available as they will fight tooth and nail to secure that buff, but the good news is you can probably take a 2v1 fight with your ultimate activated so you should try and force these fights. If you manage to get a couple of levels ahead as Vamana then you can most definitely take them fights and you should try and own the enemy jungle and keep your lead.

Fighting Scenarios

As Vamana you have 2 forms of CC, a knockup in your Clear The Path, and a slow with your Umbrellarang. In his ult vamana can only basic attack so you want to land the rest of your kit before you ult to maximise damage potential. A full combo might look something like:

Clear The Path

Basic
Attack
Umbrellarang

Basic
Attack
Armored Umbrella

Basic
Attack
Colossal Fury

Combo Tips
  • If you use your knock-up to start the combo you want to make sure you end up ulting at the end or are tanky enough to stay in the fight as you are using your escape as your engage.
  • Starting with the knock-up allows you to confidently land your other abilities which can sometimes be hard to land, and also allow you to weave in some basic attacks in between as the knock-up is quite high. This may not always work however as the knock-up can sometimes knock the enemy in random directions so make sure to try and prioritizing landing both ticks of the Umbrellarang over everything as this is your main damage (you can basic attack and use Armored Umbrella while Umbrellarang is travelling).
  • Using your ultimate with umrellarang applied will slow the enemy making it easier for you to land your basic attacks while in ult form, allowing for easier procs of Hastened Katana/ Frostbound Hammer
  • Try to bait out escapes before using your ultimate as you cannot catch people if they dash or go over walls with leaps.

Stages of The Game

Early Game

Vamanas early game isnt the best as his clear is below average compared to most warriors and nearly all mages. Level his Umbrellarang as even though his clear isnt great, it is safe, so survive till you get your boots online, you should not be getting killed if you can position correctly.

Mid Game

This is when the hyper farming magic happens. Once you get a few levels in and have your boots and maybe one more item you can start farming safely and often. Without the ultimate however he still isnt the strongest mid game solo laner so be mindful of that. If you farm correctly though it should be enough to put you above everyone on the map, making your rotations to them mid team fights heavily favour you.

Late Game

If coming into the late game with a farm-lead then every fight your in with your ultimate is an almost guaranteed win. Expect to be getting double and triple kills all around and ensure your team takes advantage of this by taking fire-giants and phoenixes and other objectives to keep snowballing that gold lead.

Pros & Cons Of Vamana

Vamana is a very strong god in the meta right now but he isnt without his flaws. Every god in smite has a counter and vamana is no different.

P R O S

  • Vamanas ability to invade and hyper farm is one of the best in smite coming from solo lane
  • Colossal Fury in a teamfight is a greate teamfight ultimate and forces the enemy to either fight you or dump abilities on you and run away
  • His Ultimate makes him pretty much unkillable whilst it is active
  • His poke, peel, and CC are all solid options

C O N S

  • Antiheal is the biggest counter to vamana in the game and can make you regret picking him sometimes if the enemy play around and focus you whilst you are in your ultimate, ( Cursed Ankh being the biggest counter or anyone with built in antiheal such as Odins Ring of Spears or Cerberus's Spirit of Death for example)
  • Has poor early game and doesn't play well from behind (fortunately it is easy to catch up if you farm smart)
  • Can sometimes be very ultimate dependant unless out-farming everyone

Conclusions

  • Vamanas Farming is the aim of the game with him
  • Vamanas Ultimate makes you un-killable so try to use it on cooldown
  • Watch out for antiheal as it heavily counters his ultimate
  • Get as much damage as possible off before using your ultimate and you should try and use your ultimate when you are below half health as it gives you an almost second chance
  • Profit
