Sometimes it is even little changes in your approach how you play the game (tactics) or little adjustments on the mechanics that will boost your performance and ensure the victory.
Even though the following might be perceived as fundamental basics of gameplay they are still not applied by everyone all the time. So let's jump right into it and talk about how to improve.
The god's passive is often overlooked and not used at all or not used to its full potential. Therefore it is important to read, understand and use the passives. For example if you play Nu Wa you definitely want to take advantage of her passive strenght of wood. This means you need to be aware of the mechanics, but also be able to use it accordingly on engagements ingame. In this example you would hit five basic attacks and hold the next basic attack for an engagement to ensure the root so you can follow up with more damage or even a stunlock from your clay soldier + shining metal combo. Obviously landing your shots is implied for this!
Or when you play Chaac and constantly have to report VVM("Out of mana!") because you spammed your abilities all the time you probably haven't understood his passive overflow and don't play accordingly.
Every passive in Smite is different and not all of them affect the gods mechanics or play style. Some of them are more linked to item effects instead and therefore promote a certain build on the particular god. Ares is a perfect example for this type of passive. Blessed presence grants him additional 30 magical power for each aura item he completes. While damage is never a guardians primary focus and the main reason for building aura items is to grant the utility/benefit to your team (thanks to Bran for pointing this out in the comments), it does make Ares a serious threat with killing potential. So it is no surprise he can be found on top of the player damage charts in some games. Please also note that it is not recommended (and first and foremost not useful) to only focus on aura items for stacking the buff!
While it might seem like an impossible task to you, given the amount of gods that are available in Smite. Be assured, no one expect you to know it all right away! But if you are looking for ways to improve your gameplay, maybe start with a handful of gods - the ones you like to play the most.

15% lifesteal isn't huge and is a bit less than most lifesteal items (with the exception of Polynomicon), but knowing it's there means instead of getting Bancroft's Talon or Pythagorem's Piece early, you can reasonably delay lifesteal until later...in essence, it can affect how you decide to build, and in what order.
you pretty much build a normal power build, however you can add in DB (I don't know how viable that is nowadays tho)
I do want to point out one important thing though...understanding the passive is absolutely important, just like understanding the individual abilities. HOWEVER, some passives really are a weird fit for the god, and sometimes provide a bit of misdirection.
You mention Ares' passive, which gives him 30 power for each aura item built. This is one of those cases where players not in the know might see that and ONLY go for aura items. It's important to understand his true role. Power is nice, but many agree that only building a couple of aura items that fit the situation are more effective than going all out for auras. Basically, you build aura items for their utility to the team, not for the power increase for Ares himself. Note Duotem's guide as an example. If you're in any agreement about this point, I might suggest changing your Ares example in the post.
Another example in my opinion would be Da Ji's passive, Torture Blades. People might read that and build full basic attack with crit or qins + other items in that mindset. However, she's often best built as a hybrid or more like a standard ability-based Assassin.
And of course, some gods have passives (e.g. Dead of Night) that you just really won't think about in the end.
In any case, keep it up, we appreciate the work you're putting in!
