They're so close to one another that they might as well be identical. This isn't like Fatalis vs Hastened Fatalis, with clear gameplay differences; it's two items that have a difference of:

-5 physical power
-An effective 40% vs a flat 40%.

I'd have liked to see less crit chance on malice, and make it 20% or something, or make it synergize with the golden bow.

The point is that Malice is straight up better than Rage in almost all situations where you'd like to pick one of them up. In other words, big upgrade for carries.

Malice will just give you 60% crit chance though, where as Rage will give you 50%-100% combined with Deathbringer, so I wouldn't say Malice is that much better. On melee gods like Mercury and Bakasura I would still rather go for Rage than Malice. That is my opinion at least.

The problem with Rage is that you need to not get a crit in order to get a higher crit chance and then hope you get a crit with your elevated chance. When you do get one your crit chance goes right back down to where it originally was and you start over again. If you run the math on it you will see that your DPS is higher with Malice than with Rage, especially if you also have a Deathbringer (which you should always have if you are going to build any crit chance at all) and/or have passive crit chance. ( Artemis, Hun Batz, Sun Wukong. Fun fact, both monkeys get passive crit.)

Malice also has extra physical power, which means that your crits will hit harder and that your abilities will scale better. It is a very marginal difference, but hey, it's there.

At the end of the day, Malice is straight up better than Rage in the vast majority of cases where you'd like to pick one of them up.

Agreed. I've looked through all my guides (the ones in game not here) and replaced most if not every Rage with Malice.

Its simple

RAGE = 10% less crit than malice BUT when you don't crit it will raise your crit making you MORE LIKELY TO CRIT if you don't crit.

MALICE = 10% more crit which means you have a higher chance to crit BUT if you don't crit then you have to keep relying on that 40% to crit unlike rage which will raise its crit until its crit.

Basically its about luck

Do you feel that 40% crit vs 30% crit is big enough difference that you will crit much more?
If you feel your not going to crit rage might be the better option because when you don't crit rage will help you out

Or do you feel that 40% is enough to get you more crits than rage would by rasing your crit.

Either way its basically luck lolol.

Basically its this

Malic = higher chance to crit when attacking
Rage = lower chance to crit when attacking

Malic = when you miss a crit YOU MISS A CRIT and still remain at 40% crit and PRAY you crit
Rage = when you miss a crit YOUR CRIT CONTINUES TO RAISE making your crit chance even higher than malice.

The thing is though.

Crit is LUCK not a GUARANTEED %

Meaning just because you have 90% crit DOESN'T mean your going to crit 90% of the time.
It just means its 90% LIKELY THAT YOU WILL CRIT.

LIKELY does not mean you WILL CRIT, it just means your more likely.
I guess you could be so unlucky that you still don't crit even with 99% but that would be super unlucky.

Basically the item you will choose is based on HOW LUCKY YOU THINK YOU WILL GET.

Uhh, let's look at the math.

Malice: 40% crit chance, flat.
Rage: 30% crit chance flat, with an extra 10% chance for every non-crit you do.

In other words, for what would be the first hit on Rage, Malice is better. For Rage's second stack, they're the same. And after that, Rage is better.

I would still get Rage, though I do get Malice on Sun Wukong, because of the synergy with his passive.

The stacks on Rage resets on every successful crit, meaning after every crit it'll start from 0 stacks. So if neither of them crits on first hit, they will have the same amount of crit chance, which still makes Malice better because of its slightly higher physical power.

So to make a long story short: Malice is better because of its higher base crit chance and an additional 5 physical power.

Rage also has higher attack speed, I don't know why it says 9% I'm pretty sure rage has 15% attack speed.
